Chronis Botsoglou Carpenter, 1992 Oil and graphite on 70 x 50 cm Coppersmith, 1992 Oil on canvas 70 x 50 cm

Kalogreza Branch (217)

hronis Botsoglou belongs to a group of artists who turned to person-centred art and realism, at a time when most C artists focused on more abstract art.

There are three things that stand out in his work, first and foremost his focus on people. Botsoglou has written that “The human body is the most beautiful thing that exists, the most moving”. Indeed, his works reflect an in-depth study of the possibilities regarding the depiction of the human body. The second distinctive feature of his work is the search for realism in all its art forms and the third is the creation of distinct units, with different titles that depend on each unit’s subject.

His work reflects the influence of different artists, such as George Bouzianis, regarding the perception of colour, image distortion and separation and mostly the introduction to expressionism, Alberto Giacometti, who broadened Botsoglou’s research on the human body and, finally, Francis Bacon, whose influence is evident in the neutral spaces that surround Botsoglou’s figures.

Chronis Botsoglou Chronis Botsoglou Carpenter, 1992 Coppersmith, 1992 Oil and graphite on wood 70 x 50 cm Oil on canvas 70 x 50 cm

The Kalogreza Branch features two works by Botsoglou, titled “Carpenter” and “Coppersmith”, which belong to his “45 professions” series that was first presented in 1992. It is a series of portraits which, in essence, are variations of the artist’s portrait. Through these works, Botsoglou explores the social characteristics of certain professions and seeks to turn some images into values, through their symbolism.

Both of the Collection’s works are nudes, as is also the case with the rest of the series, while there is no indication of the occupation of the men portrayed; this is mostly achieved through facial features, colours and inscriptions. In addition, poems written by the artist have been inscribed on the back of the paintings. All of the above produce a challenging result and highlight the existing figurative elements, while both works reflect a harmony between each man’s profession and colour rendition. The carpenter is featured on a wooden surface and the coppersmith emerges from a red background.

The way that both men are portrayed overturns the objective perception of reality, as they are defined by outline, colour, painting material as well as elements of supernaturalism.
