These records are largely in continuation of material deposited in 1995 as Acc.11208. Written records of the Company of Gentlemen Golfers date from 1744. However, Edinburgh Town Council's Act for the ‘Regulations to be observed by those who play yearly for the City of Edinburgh's Silver Club’ of 7 March 1744, indicate that they had been in the habit of playing golf on Leith Links for some time. The social aspect of golf was a great importance to the Company, and in 1771 they built the Golf house on Leith Links. The Company continued to play at Leith until their move to Musselburgh in the 1830s. In May 1865 a club house was built at Musselburgh. As the funds of the Company and the club house were to be managed separately, ‘The Golf House Club’, open only to members of the Company, was formed. Although there were close ties between the two organizations, separate records were kept until they merged in 1882. The Club House was sold on the move to Muirfield in 1891. Files and volumes containing sensitive personal information relating to living individuals as defined by the Data Protection Act, 1998, are indicated with an asterisk. Early Golf in Scotland The modern game of golf we understand today is generally considered to be a Scottish invention. A spokesman for the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews, one of the oldest Scottish golf organisations, said "Stick and ball games have been around for many centuries, but golf as we know it today, played over 18 holes, clearly originated in Scotland." The word golf, or in Scots language gouf, is usually thought to be a Scots alteration of Dutch "colf" or "colve" meaning "stick, "club", "bat", itself related to the Proto-Germanic language *kulth- as found in Old Norse kolfr meaning "bell clapper", and the German Kolben meaning "mace or club".The Dutch term Kolven refers to a related sport.

Wedgewood Golf & Country Club 2021 Junior Golf Program Dear Parents and Juniors, The Wedgewood Golf & Country Club Professionals would like to welcome all the young golfers to the 2021 golf season. It is with great enthusiasm and excitement that we prepare for the 2021 Junior Golf season. We hope to help you learn and enjoy all the benefits the game of golf has to offer. Our mission at Wedgewood is to provide an experience for our members that consistently exceeds their expectations. We are committed to building one of the finest Junior Programs that is interactive, fun, and teaches the core values for golf as well as life. The Junior Golf Programs and Spring Trainings will be open to all members at Wedgewood and will provide many opportunities for juniors this year. • The first is our JR Spring Training which starts in mid-April, and will continue into the month of May. These Spring Training Sessions will focus on golf etiquette, rules, golf swing fundamentals, and short game fundamentals. Cost is $20 per junior per session. • Returning this year are the always popular Junior Play Days. We will run these for our 3 hole, 5 hole and 9 hole groups on Thursdays, beginning at 8:00am, throughout June and July. The Thursday play days are important because it allows our juniors the opportunity to experience the golf course. There will be 6 junior play days this year. We will also need parental assistance to help chaperon groups; please call the golf shop to be on the parent list. We need and appreciate your help! • We will also have our Junior Golf Clinics on Friday mornings.
