Whilst not commonly rated among the world’s top courses, a day at one of golf’s most historic venues, the West Links of North Berwick, is a truly unique experience. In fact, noted architect, Tom Doak, writes in The Confidential Guide that the West Links is one of his best 30 golfing experiences ever. The course lies on the second oldest golfing ground in Scotland, features an ancient shepherd’s wall as part of its design and is home to “Redan”, the most copied par three ever. Old Tom Morris and his son, Tommy, were playing a match here in 1875 against the Parks when word came that Tommy’s wife had taken ill during childbirth. They both died before Young Tom could return to St. Andrews. Tommy never recovered from their loss and died on Christmas Day of that year. Muirfield (36 holes), The home course for the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, the world’s oldest golf club. A typical day at Muirfield consists of morning fourballs (play your own ball); a sumptuous lunch in the members’ dining room (the best buffet lunch in Scotland, jacket & tie required) and afternoon foursome (alternate shot). There is a certain courteous, civilised ambience here which some mistake for stodginess. Members of the H&B Expeditionary Forces frequently describe a day at Muirfield as their best golf experience ever. Note: Muirfield requires a handicap of 18 or less for visitors to play. Jubilee Course at St. Andrews. Named in honor of Queen Victoria’s 60-year reign on the throne - her Diamond Jubilee - the third course on the St. Andrews links debuted in 1897. Originally a 12-hole links, the Jubilee was initially intended for use by the town’s youth and beginners, yet it wasn’t long before the quality of this ground for golf demanded an extension of the course to a full 18-holes. Willie Auchterlonie, a former Open Champion and local hero, made additional changes to the course in the 1930s and 1940s, but it wasn’t until Donald Steel arrived in 1989 that “The Jube” as we know it was born. Old Course at St. Andrews. There is a school of thought that says the Old Course at St. Andrews was not designed or built by man but simply evolved over time thanks to Mother Nature. Yet throughout the links we encounter the influence of its longtime Keeper of the Green, Old Tom Morris. For some, it takes time to fully appreciate his beloved Old Course. But once discovered, from the nerve-wracking first tee shot with the R&A clubhouse looming, to the stroll across the Swilcan Bridge, the magic of The Home of Golf is one that’s impossible to forget. Carnoustie Golf Links. What we know of Carnoustie is a mixed bag of acclaim and notoriety. It was here that Ben Hogan capped his trio of majors in 1953, by winning the Claret Jug in what would be his only start in The Open Championship. Yet it’s the vision of Jean Van de Velde standing in the Barry Burn that has come to define both the 1999 Open as well as Carnoustie. The course humbled the world’s best players that year and did the same when The Open returned in 2018. At Carnoustie, you can expect to be tried, teased, and taxed from the 1st tee to the 18th green. But you can also expect to never forget it. Kingsbarns Golf Links. The site has long been known for its intimate connection with the sea. The fact that its golf origins date back to 1793 is testimony to the attributes of the site which foster ideal conditions for links turf to flourish amid interesting natural terrain. This part of East Fife near St. Andrews has sandy soils, undulating ridges and hollows, Cambo Burn running into the sea, all set immediately against the rugged coastline of the North Sea. Most definitely a championship course, the esteemed Golf Magazine rankings place Kingsbarns in the world’s top 50 and it serves as one of the three venues for the Dunhill Links Championship. Accommodations & meals: • Seven (7) nights lodging, double occupancy, as specified: Three (3) nights in sea view rooms at The Lodge at Craigielaw Golf Club. Opened in 2013, the Lodge offers 25 spacious bedrooms designed with the golfer in mind, many with excellent views of the sea. The lodge is just a stone’s throw from Muirfield, North Berwick, Gullane and all the other links Scotland’s Golf Coast. The club’s bar and restaurant are a fine choice for the post-round meal as the sun sets over the Firth of Forth. Four (4) nights in Eden view rooms at the St. Andrews Old Course Hotel & Spa. Perhaps the most famous hotel in golf, the Old Course Hotel is the perfect embodiment of the Good Life in St. Andrews. Owned by the Kohler Company, the hotel and its luxurious Kohler Waters Spa recently underwent a multi-million-pound renovation. Of course, the hotel is best known for its iconic location along the infamous Road Hole, which requires golfers to drive over the corner of the building to find the fairway. • Full breakfast each morning at your hotel. Mary Queen of Scots spent her childhood in the castle and her coronation took place in the Chapel Royal in 1543.
