The pandemic has made essential self distancing and quarantining to arrest the spread of the Corona virus. As a result, most APS activities have been shelved for the time being. Being in isolation at home has been a mixed blessing. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. This includes all mammals, birds, reptiles, frogs and fish, 137 families of vascular plants (over 15,000 species) and a range of invertebrate groups. THREATENED SPECIES SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE Established under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 The Minister’s delegate approved this Conservation Advice on 01/04/2016. Conservation Advice Prasophyllum tunbridgense Tunbridge leek-orchid Conservation Status Prasophyllum tunbridgense (Tunbridge leek-orchid) is listed as Endangered under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (Cwlth) (EPBC Act). The species is eligible for listing as prior to the commencement of the EPBC Act, it was listed as Endangered under Schedule 1 of the Endangered Species Protection Act 1992 (Cwlth). The main factors that are the cause of the species being eligible for listing in the Endangered category are its restricted geographic distribution is precarious for its survival due to its restricted extent of occurrence and area of occupancy, and low number of mature individuals. Prasophyllum tunbridgense (Tunbridge leek-orchid) is listed as Endangered under the Threatened Species Protection Act 1995 (Tasmania). Description The Tunbridge leek-orchid belongs to a group of orchids commonly known as leek orchids because the erect hollow leaf resembles that of a leek. Prasophyllum species are herbaceous perennial terrestrials with small, fleshy, round or oval tubers and a few fleshy, irregular roots. Most species are dormant over summer and autumn and begin growth in early winter. The single leaf is reddish at the base as opposed to green as in onion orchids (Microtis species). The flower spike emerges through the side of the leaf above the middle, with the portion of leaf above the point of emergence being free and often withered by the time the flowers open. -

Most herbarium specimens have been collected from October to January. It is identifiable from vegetative characteristics. Bossiaea obcordata is found in very dry sites within dry sclerophyll forest in the north-east and on the East Coast of the State. It is often recorded with Eucalyptus sieberi (ironbark). -

The Minister transfer this species from the critically endangered to the endangered category, effective from 24 January 2014 Advice to the Minister the Environment from the Threatened Species Scientific Committee (the Committee) on Amendment to the list of Threatened Species under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) 1. Reason for Conservation Assessment by the Committee This advice follows assessment of new information provided through the Species Information Partnership with Tasmania on: Barbarea australis (native wintercress) This is the Committee’s second consideration of the species under the EPBC Act. The Committee’s first consideration was in 2001. At this time it recommended the species be transferred from the endangered to the critically endangered category. 2. Summary of Species Details Taxonomy Conventionally accepted as Barbarea australis Hook. f. State Listing Status Listed as endangered under the Tasmanian Threatened Species Protection Act 1995. Description Native wintercress is an annual or short-lived perennial plant 50–100 cm high with a radiating cluster of broad dark green leaves at the base of an erect flowering stem. The flowers are yellow with 2–8 mm long petals. The many seed capsules are 20–40 mm long and 2–2.5 mm wide (TSU 2001; TSS 2010). Distribution Native wintercress is endemic to Tasmania. It is known from 23 populations in riparian habitat associated with 10 rivers and creeks from northern Tasmania to rivers flowing south from the Central Highlands (TSS, 2010). Relevant Native wintercress is found near river margins, creek beds and Biology/Ecology along flood channels adjacent to the river in shallow alluvial silt on rock slabs, rocky ledges, or between large cobbles. -

Native Pea Plants Walkabout KWG standard (petal) wing wing (petal) (petal) keel (2 petals) Pea plants and wattles (botanically, members of the Fabaceae family) both possess root nodules containing nitrogen-fixing bacteria and have pods as their fruit. We classify the pea plants as Fabaceae, Subfamily Faboideae, the wattles as Fabaceae, Subfamily Mimosoideae. Many native pea plants grow in Ku-ring-gai Wildflower Garden, most of them with yellow–coloured flowers. Take a walk through the garden and see if you can find them. The Minister approved this conservation advice on 15 January 2014 Approved Conservation Advice for Barbarea australis (native wintercress) (s266B of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999) This Conservation Advice has been developed based on the best available information at the time this Conservation Advice was approved; this includes existing plans, records or management prescriptions for this species. Description Barbarea australis, Family Brassicaceae, also known as native wintercress, is an annual or short lived perennial. It has a cluster of broad dark green leaves at the base of an erect 50–100 cm high flowering stem. The flowers are yellow with 2–8 mm long petals. Ecology of Pyrmont peninsula iii Executive summary City Council’s ‘Sustainable Sydney 2030’ initiative ‘is a vision for the sustainable development of the City for the next 20 years and beyond’. It has a largely anthropocentric basis, that is ‘viewing and interpreting everything in terms of human experience and values’(Macquarie Dictionary, 2005). The perspective taken here is that Council’s initiative, vital though it is, should be underpinned by an ecocentric ethic to succeed. This latter was defined by Aldo Leopold in 1949, 60 years ago, as ‘a philosophy that recognizes[sic] that the ecosphere, rather than any individual organism[notably humans] is the source and support of all life and as such advises a holistic and eco-centric approach to government, industry, and individual’(http://dictionary.babylon.com). Some relevant considerations are set out in Part 1: General Introduction. In this report, Pyrmont peninsula - that is the communities of Pyrmont and Ultimo – is considered as a microcosm of the City of Sydney, indeed of urban areas globally. An extensive series of early views of the peninsula are presented to help the reader better visualise this place as it was early in European settlement (Part 2: Early views of Pyrmont peninsula). The physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula has been transformed since European settlement, and Part 3: Physical geography of Pyrmont peninsula describes the geology, soils, topography, shoreline and drainage as they would most likely have appeared to the first Europeans to set foot there.
