Overall accreditation procedures and the site visit will be the focus. This is a nuts-and-bolts, step-by-step, walk-through of the process. A planning session for institutions which are two to three years before the visit, but not yet in the formal self-study process, will be held in the same meeting room beginning at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday. The second session will focus on choosing approaches that best fit the current needs of a specific institution. All attendees are welcome to attend both sessions. Charles G. Pavilion (GTL) Alternative Certification is a growing reality. Needs to address the teacher shortage are taking priority over completion of standard teacher preparation curricula. This session will address both the cloud and the silver lining in Alternative Certification. Issues to be included are quality control; the impact on curricula; balances between music and pedagogical studies; and new political issues for teacher preparation, both within and beyond the campus. Analyses based on case studies from several states will be the basis for an open exploration of this critical topic. The goal is basic orientation to the issues, ideas, and resources associated with the topic. This session addresses the critical need to become proficient at seeking grants, and will discuss grants from national, state, and local governmental agencies; foundations; and corporations. The session will also include the opportunity to review selected successful and unsuccessful proposals, discussing strengths and weaknesses of each. Many music programs are facing increasing challenges to provide accompanists, schedule small ensemble rehearsals, and deal effectively with large amounts of repertory. Technology offers possible approaches and solutions to these problems. This session will explore the pros and cons of various technical means and provide a case study of solutions developed at one institution that use computer and MIDI technologies. Presenter: Timothy Hester, University of Houston Moderator: Mary Ellen Poole, Millikin University 9:30 a.m.-10:30 a.m. RECEPTION FOR SPOUSES Terrace Gardens (GTL) Host: Ann Tomatz 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. THEORY PEDAGOGY: CURRENT TRENDS, NEW IDEAS Gold (BL) Music theory, especially at the level associated with basic musicianship, is a critical subject for all musicians. Given levels of precollegiate preparation, time and credit-hour pressures, technological possibilities, and the continuing need to develop basic knowledge and skills, effective theory pedagogy becomes a particularly critical matter. This session will provide an overview of current thinking about theory pedagogy, including the impact of technology, integration of basic theory with other studies in music, and helping students learn to connect theory knowledge and skills to the preparation of performances. Presenters: James Faulconer, University of Oklahoma Michael Rogers, University of Oklahoma Moderator: Barbara Staropoli, S.S.J., Nazareth College of Rochester 10:45 a.m.-12:15 p.m. PREPARING FOR DIFFICULT CONVERSATIONS, PART I Venetian (LL) Being effective in difficult conversations can be a challenging aspect in any professional setting. These sessions will consider the underlying structure of difficult conversations. The framework discovered will be used as the basis for investigating how executives might prepare for difficult conversations encountered in the workplace. Demonstrations, interactive exercises, and facilitative discussions will be featured. Specific focus areas will be how to handle blame and accusations, strong emotions, and the identity issues that may cause executives and their colleagues to lose their balance. This session will consider evolutions in music, business, and the business of music, and relate these to future possibilities for program content. Since its establishment on October 27, 2014, YCB is Yale University’s first and only university-wide center outside of the United States and continues to serve as an intellectual hub that draws luminaries from China, the U.S., and beyond. During 2018-2019, YCB hosted a variety of events and programs that advanced Yale's mission to improve our world and develop global leaders for all sectors, featuring topics ranging from health and medicine, technology and entrepreneurship, environment and sustainability, to politics, economics, and the arts and humanities.     Robert Blocker Piano Bio An internationally acclaimed concert pianist, Robert Blocker began his study of the instrument at age five, presenting his first public recital two years later. Today, he performs throughout the world. His engagements have included concerts in the United States, Europe, Mexico, China, South Korea, Thailand, and elsewhere. Recent orchestral engagements have included appearances with the Beijing Symphony Orchestra, Shanghai Symphony, Houston Symphony, Monterey Philharmonic, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Moscow Chamber Orchestra, Korean Symphony Orchestra, and Daejeon (South Korea) Symphony Orchestra. His 2007 performance at the Great Mountains Music Festival with the Sejong Soloists was broadcast twice, throughout South Korea, on KBS. Blocker has been described by the Los Angeles Times as an artist of “great skill and accomplishment” who performs with “a measurable virtuoso bent and considerable musical sensitivity.” The Korea Times has lauded the “great vigor” of his performances, and The Straits Times (Singapore) has recognized the “beauty and sincerity” of his playing. According to the Mexican newspaper La Provincia, “He is a pianist of purified technique – one could say perfect … he has an enormous sensitivity, the ability to recognize the emotional message of the work and pour it out in the performance.” Of the Naxos recording, Fanfare’s Michael Ullman wrote, “This is not the first recording of Mozart piano concertos I have heard that features a string quartet (arranged by Mozart himself) rather than a chamber orchestra, but it is among the most ingratiating. Mozart described these concertos as ‘very brilliant, pleasing to the ear, natural without being vapid.’ … Robert Blocker and this bright young quartet elegantly enact his description, playing naturally, brilliantly, and unaffectedly.” Mr.

    Second Edition NOTES ON THE SECOND EDITION This second edition of the Seeking Abraham Report includes additional appendices, such as Appendix B, the Special Committee on Slavery and Justice’s Report to the Board of Trustees. The Special Committee’s recommendations were accepted unanimously by the board, meaning that the university will begin to implement a version of the key campus grounds recommendations of the report in the 2019-2020 academic year. With thousands of readers, we found proofing errors. Special thanks to Lynne Shackelford, Professor of English, for copy editing, and to Anna Hoffman (’19) for completing these revisions. Antebellum financial records were rechecked for accuracy, and conflicts in the histories have now been better featured. For example, Daniel’s Furman University: A History reports $30,000 in initial gifts in 1850, a $70,000 minimum fundraising goal set, and $100,000 expected one-year fundraising goal for construction, as well as a $300,000 corporate charter; James C. Furman’s own report in The Baptists and the National Centenary: A Record of Christian Work, 1776-1876 is a $200,000 initial endowment in bonds raised. Inflation calculations were updated from FY2018 to FY2019 according to values set by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Over the year since publication, faculty, students, archival researchers, trustees, and community members have participated in the research, dialogue, and healing process of Seeking Abraham. One important example of student engagement has been highlighted in Appendix C by Gregg Hecimovich, chair of English (including the second edition update of Abraham Sims’ birth year from 1839 to 1844, on p.33).
