Ballymena Old Churchyard Plot Owners c1875-1935+ This is a compilation and cross referencing of 3 existing records: Plot owners book and separate alphabetical index, both of which were damaged in a fire and have burnt edges losing some information. Also a transcript made after the fire to replace the original. Earliest of the few dates recorded is 1875 which predates the register to before the transfer of the graveyard to the Council from the Representative Church Body in 1896. Transfers are shown in red. IntroductionI Step into Ballymena's past with self-guided Churchyard Trails The Ballymena area is dotted with a diverse range of churchyards reflecting the fluid and constantly evolving nature of religious sites from the late 400s onwards. Each site offers a different experience and has its own unique story to tell within the wider history of the area. This booklet features two distinct trails. Pre-Reformation Trail The Pre-Reformation Trail explores the history of some of the oldest remaining traces of built heritage in the area. It highlights sites that have been used for Christian worship from the time of St Patrick and before the formation of the Protestant faith in the early 1500s. Covenanter Trail The Covenanter Trail delves into the distinctive history and associated sites of the 'Covenanters', or Reformed Presbyterian Church, in the local area. Covenanters were named after the National Covenant and the Solemn League and Covenant signed in Scotland in the mid 1600s. In 1644 the Solemn League and Covenant was brought to Ireland and signed in 26 places across Ulster, including Ballymena. These documents declared Presbyterianism to be the only true form of church government and insisted that the King should have no authority over the church. REASONS Introduction 1. This is a reference under the Rates (Northern Ireland) Order 1977, as amended ("the 1977 Order"). Rule 11 of the Valuation Tribunal Rules (Northern Ireland) 2007 as amended provides that an appeal may be disposed of on the basis of written representations if all the parties have given their consent in writing. This is such a case. 2. The Appellant, Mr Stephen Scott by Notice of Appeal dated 2nd October 2017 and received by the Office of the tribunal on 10th October 2017, appealed to this tribunal against a completion notice issued in accordance with the statutory provisions mentioned below in respect of a hereditament situated at number 123 Old Cullybackey Road, Galgorm Parks, Ballymena, BT43 5PB (“the subject property”). 3. The Appellant’s Notice of Appeal was received by the Secretary of the Northern Ireland Valuation Tribunal (NIVT) on 10th October 2017. The President of the Northern Ireland Valuation Tribunal granted an extension of time to the Appellant (with no objection from the Respondent) to Appeal pursuant to Rule 9 (2) and Rule 26 of the Valuation Tribunal Rules (Northern Ireland) 2007.
