Revelation 6-22 John Barnett Revelation 6-22 REVELATION 6-22 JOHN BARNETT REVELATION 6-22 LIVING HOPE FOR THE END DAYS Dr. John Barnett REVELATION 6 - 22 2 SYLLABUS OUR SCOPE Ten hours will be spent studying Chapters 6-22. Revelation is the only book in the Bible that has a promise of blessing for those who read it!! Revelation breaks nicely into two sections: the “prophecy” of Revelation 6-22 and the “practice” of Revelation 1-5. OUR PURPOSE The Book of Revelation is God’s final written communication to man. More than just the future and destiny of mankind, this book is the final revelation of the beauty, character, and wonders of our Lord Jesus Christ. For us as believers, the Person of Jesus Christ and how to worship Him will dominate our study. Knowing Him should motivate us to personal holiness and evangelism. COURSE GOALS In exams and assignments, the students are expected: 1. To KNOW the general outline of Revelation. 2. To SEE the key Old Testament quotations used in the book. 3. To UNDERSTAND reasons for the dispensational interpretation of the book. 4. To RECOGNIZE the symbols in the book. 5. To APPLY God’s Word to our daily lives. ASSIGNMENTS 1. Read the entire Book of Revelation once 2. Do a Project. A typed 3-part Devotional Method study for each chapter of Revelation 6-22 3. Learn Two Verses (3:20; 20:15) 4. Take Two Quizzes 5. Take Exam OUR PROJECT Study and type out a three-part analysis of Rev. 6-22 using the Devotional Method as described on the next page. Each chapter’s study consists of 3 parts: a Summary; a list of Lessons, Truths, or Principles you saw; and a personal Application of one or more of those truths you found. I will explain this Project clearly in class. A sample copy of a chapter I just did is also attached. Each student will send this Project to me for grading by Thursday night of class week to my email address: [email protected]. No late work accepted. REVELATION 6 - 22 3 GUIDE TO DEVOTIONAL BIBLE STUDY & JOURNALING What I suggest is that you invest some time in using a method called the “Devotional Method of Bible Study” and follows these steps: 1. Read the assigned verse, paragraph or chapter; 2. Summarize the section you read, note any lessons, truths, or doctrines that you find; 3. Write out a personal prayer from you to the Lord, asking Him to change you, or work in you, or impact your life: as a personal prayer that makes application of the truths you found in that passage. Here is a typical way I would do that below. You don’t have to do this method after this class, but I have been using and teaching this to students of the Word for 30 plus years and I can vouch for the immense response they give that the Word comes alive, sticks to their hearts; and they have grown deeply through this devotional pattern! This gives you a very basic illustration of what I mean by using the Devotional Bible Study method, and recording your summary, lessons, and a personal prayer of application. This would be the minimum amount of work needed for EACH chapter. REVELATION 6 - 22 6 INTRODUCTION TO THE BOOK OF REVELATION John the Apostle is the of 5 New Testament books with 50 chapters, only surpassed by the 87 chapters of Paul’s 13 Epistles; and Luke’s 52 chapters of his two books. The Book of the Revelation of Jesus Christ was in the AD 90’s, during the reign of Emperor Domitian (8196 AD), who had exiled John to the Isle of Patmos in the Aegean Sea, roughly 60 mi. SW of Ephesus, off the coast of Roman Asia, or modern day Turkey. The of this final book is also the title contained in the opening words of the first verse:The Revelation of Jesus Christ. All Scriptures point to Him (Luke 24:27,44), and this book is the capstone of revealing the character of Christ. Revelation is a self-outlined (Acts is another), as we can see the three clear divisions of this book in Rev. 1:19: “the things that you have seen”, this is chapter 1; and “the things that are”, these are chapters 2 & 3; and “the things which shall be”, these are chapters 422. Revelation is a challenging book, because of: There are many symbols both explained and unexplained. There are historic disagreements among the four main avenues of interpretation: preterists believe Revelation’s events already happened; historists believe the Book just explains history from then to the end; idealists believe the Book is just principles not historic events; and futurists (that’s where we are) believe that from chapter 4 onward shows Heaven and the future on Earth. There is an amazing abundance of numeric references in Revelation. There are hundreds of quotations and allusions to the Old Testament in Revelation. The grammar John uses reflects what may easily be seen as excitement at what he saw. Revelation is the Book that comes with God’s promised blessing for reading and responding to the truths God communicates in these 22 chapters. • THE DESTRUCTION of RELIGIOUS BABYLON Revelation 17
THE DESTRUCTION OF RELIGIOUS BABYLON Revelation 17 Revelation chapters 17 and 18 are an interlude in the sequence of Tribulation events. These chapters deal with the destruction of religious and economic Babylon. Dr. Charles Ryrie explains why Babylon is the figure used to describe these forces in the last days. Babylon has had a long and consistently dishonorable history. It had its beginnings around 3000 B.C. under Nimrod (Gen. 10:8–10). The tower of Babel (Gen. 11:1–9) was built to prevent people from scattering throughout the earth, in direct defiance of God's command to do so. Hammurabi made Babylon a religious power about 1600 B.C. by making Marduk god of the city of Babylon and head of a pantheon of 1,300 deities. Extra-biblical sources indicate that the wife of Nimrod became the head of the Babylonian mysteries, which consisted of religious rites that were part of the worship of idols in Babylon. Her name was Semiramis, and she supposedly gave birth to a son, Tammuz, who claimed to be a savior and the fulfillment of the promise given to Eve in Genesis 3:15. This anti-God Babylonian religion is alluded to in Ezekiel 8:14…, Ezekiel 8:14 (ESV) 14 Then he brought me to the entrance of the north gate of the house of the LORD, and behold, there sat women weeping for Tammuz. Jeremiah 7:18…, Jeremiah 7:17–18 (ESV) 17 Do you not see what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The children gather wood, the fathers kindle fire, and the women knead dough, to make cakes for the queen of heaven.

  • Who Are the 4 Horsemen of the Apocalypse? Revelation 6:1-17 Compass Church Life Group Lessons November #1
Who Are The 4 Horsemen Of The Apocalypse? Revelation 6:1-17 Compass Church Life Group Lessons November #1 1. The 4 horsemen is a term common in our culture for bad things coming. Let’s read the original source for this term and do so carefully for comprehension. Read the passage at least 2 times and underline key words. • Where do the horsemen come from? Whose authority are they under? • What does each do? White horse Red horse Black horse Pale horse (Rem. Clint’s movie) • Sum up in your own words the message of this chapter. • What is the implication for YOU as you live this week? On a scale of 1 to 10 how much does that affect you during the week? 2. Consider this quote from the sermon: Dosteovsky is one of the greatest novelists in history. In The Brothers Karamozov he creates a character who is determined to prove atheism is true and Christianity is a lie. Ivan is his name. He keeps a notebook in which he records every evil, every suffering, every tragedy he hears of. This notebook of evil and suffering is his proof against God. Either God does not exist, or if He does exist, He is cruel and indifferent and unloving because He does not put an end to evil. Of course, the message of this Book is that at The End of time God will put an end to evil. But in the MEANTIME, before the End of Time, the Christian life looked like a LOSER’S LIFE. It certainly did when Domitian was emperor.

  • Sermon Revelation 15-16
Revelation 15-16 12th November, 2017 Rev. Bruce Stanley Revelation 15:1-8; Revelation 16:1-17 “The final battle” Moving home Our family have moved home 9 times. It’s never been what I would call a pleasant experience. The first few times weren’t too bad. 5 or 6 hours. But as our family grew, the moves became bigger. Longer. More painful. The longest so far was 12 hours. The day would BEGIN well. Everything is finally packed. And you’re standing there. Waiting for the truck to arrive. Ready to go, go , go! And it’s an exciting moment when the truck finally pulls into the driveway. But you also know what’s ahead. Hours of pain. Revelation is the story of the final move of humanity. It’s the story of humanity moving home into eternity. We’re waiting for the truck to arrive. And Revelation tells us what the move is going to be like. Things are going to happen. Unpleasant things. Difficult things. Harsh things. But for the followers of Jesus, we have assurance that, no matter what we face, we will be safe and our place in heaven is absolutely secure. We know where we are moving to. But what is ahead is still challenging. And there’s lots of images to reflect on. So the aim today is to look at those images and understand what they mean for us today. The sea and fire So we begin with a vision of God’s people standing on a sea of glass with fire underneath.

The earth opens its mouth to swallow the water that the Dragon intends to destroy her with. The Dragon then pursues her children, attempting to make war with them. Discussion Question #1 Koester notes that the woman in labor should be understood as the people of God, and notes, “Christian readers might naturally identify her with Mary… By the end of the chapter, however, it becomes clear that the woman is the mother of all believers…” (123) Is this interpretation of the woman valid? Why or why not? Revelation 13: The Beasts ● The Beast from the Sea (13:1-10): 10 Horns and 7 Heads and 10 Diadems. It was worshipped, given authority to conquer and was utterly blasphemous. Everyone worshipped it except those who were found in the Book of Life.

RPWL THE RPWL EXPERIENCE MUSICIANS: It seems to be in the nature of things that every musician strives for the ultimate song, the perfect album. A high proportion of creativity, motivation and inspiration originates from that Yogi Lang: vocals, keyboards desire for perfection. But what happens if a band really comes close to its ideal? “Our last lklklklklkl studio album was so colourful that it would have been impossible to top that aspect. This Karlheinz Wallner: guitars, made us feel very content, but of course there was a danger that we’d end up copying backing vocals ourselves,” says Yogi Lang, vocalist and keyboardist of the prog rock act RPWL from Chris Postl: bass guitars, Southern Germany. “The question was: Will we stay on this island, relax and leave things backing vocals the way they are? Or will we embark on another journey to new horizons?” The result of this internal stock-taking has now been completed and is called The RPWL Experience, an Manni Müller: drums, album that ventures into new musical and lyrical dimensions, while sounding extremely backing vocals homogenous and of a piece. “We simply made into music what we ourselves enjoy. We didn’t want to hold back or apply the RPWL filter, but let our ideas run riot with musical Diskographie lightness.” God Has Failed (2000) This standard refers not only to the band’s music with its diverse pace, but also to the Trying To Kiss The Sun (2002) songs’ contents. Because for RPWL, the significance of their tracks is based on a tight Stock (2003) interplay between words and music.

Pastor Jeff Barclay - July 5, 2020 We’ve Got Mail Jesus’ Letter to the Church in Ephesus — Revelation 2:1-7 Passionate about Doctrine, Passionless for Jesus Of the seven churches described in Revelation 2-3 Ephesus is the church with the most extra historical and doctrinal details —Acts 19-20 and Paul’s letter to the Ephesians. COMMUNION. As we share in the Lord’s Supper let’s go back to last week’s Sermon-to-Life. It will be a helpful way to provide context and introduce today’s sermon. The focus of which will be this statement from Jesus to the Church in Ephesus: “I know you are enduring patiently and bearing up for my name’s sake, and you have not grown weary. But I have this against you. You have abandoned the love you had at first. You have abandoned Me, your first love,” (Revelation 2:4-5). Last week I wrapped up saying this Together let’s slow down a little and pay attention to the most significant person that ever lived. Let’s pay a ridiculous amount of attention to Jesus. In the days ahead, let’s make more of Jesus in the days ahead! These sound similar to what Jesus reminded the church in Ephesus. Returning their focus to Him their first love. In it’s beginning the church in Ephesus made much of Jesus. The Apostle Paul lived and taught there for three years. (Acts 19:10) In a city known for its sensual cult worship of Artemis, extraordinary miracles occurred.

[With the Privilege of His majesty the Emperor for the space of ten years] By the care and expense of Zachariah Palthenus, Bookseller, in the Free Republic of Frankfurt. 1612 PREFACE To the Most Reverend and Most Serene Prince and Lord, The Lord Henry JULIUS, Bishop of Halberstadt, Duke of Brunswick, and Burgrave of Luna; His Lordship’s mos devout and humble servant wishes Health and Peace. In the deep considerations of the Hermetic and Paracelsian writings, that has well-nigh come to pass which of old overtook the Sons of Shem at the building of the Tower of Babel. For these, carried away by vainglory, with audacious foolhardiness to rear up a vast pile into heaven, so to secure unto themselves an immortal name, but, disordered by a confusion and multiplicity of barbarous tongues, were ingloriously forced. In like manner, the searchers of Hermetic works, deterred by the obscurity of the terms which are met with in so many places, and by the difficulty of interpreting the hieroglyphs, hold the most noble art in contempt; while others, desiring to penetrate by main force into the mysteries of the terms and subjects, endeavour to tear away the concealed truth from the folds of its coverings, but bestow all their trouble in vain, and have only the reward of the children of Shem for their incredible pain and labour.

  • Group Discussion Questions for 4/3/13: Revelation 6
Group Discussion Questions for 4/3/13: Revelation 6 Read Chapter 6 of Revelation at least 2 times, without looking at notes or commentaries. 1. Consider the progression of actions in the chapter as each seal is opened. Compare this progression to that found in Jesus' discussion in Matthew 24, especially verses 4-14 and 23-31. What similarities and differences do you find? 2. Read Joel 2:28 to 3:21. Again, compare and contrast this passage with Revelation 6. Are these sections talking about the same event? Now read Acts 2:14-21. Does your opinion change in light of the way Peter uses the Joel passage at Pentecost? 3. In addition, examine Isaiah 2, Isaiah 34:1-8, and Zephaniah 1:14-2:3. Also, recall that Jerusalem and the temple were destroyed and the Jews scattered in 70AD after a rebellion against Rome, prior to the writing of Revelation. To what extent do the prophecies of destruction found in the Old Testament and in Matthew correspond to the events of 70 AD? Can that event be the fulfillment of all these prophecies outside of Revelation? 4. The lamb breaks six seals in this chapter. Try to summarize the impact of the breaking of each of the seals. What do the consequences of the breaking of the first four seals have in common? Does the same creature call out each time? The living creatures call to whom? Does the text say that the horses and their riders obey the command of the living creatures? See Zechariah 1:7-11 and 6:1-8 for other examples of horses in prophecy.
