Karlovych (UKR) MATTERS DISCUSSED At the beginning of the meeting, we addressed the items discussed in the official WOM report submitted to FIDE. The Chairperson (Ms. Polgar) especially praised FIDE for the Women’s World Blitz and Rapid Championships in Saudi Arabia which had a substantially increased prize fund, though it was only one third of the prize in the Open section. The total prize fund in the Women’s championships were $250,000 for each event. Beatriz Marinello reported on her project “Smart Girl” on behalf of the Social Action commission, which included projects in Uganda, Chile, France and the US. This projects seeks to increase participation by girls in chess in those countries. Martha Fierro elaborated on the project about chess in women prisons in Genoa, Italy, which involved the training of refugees in Italy who in turn, train women prisoners. Sophia Rohde from the United States shared some of the work their federation is in doing to promote chess for girls in the USA. They subsequently presented a video showing various interviews with young girls in chess, highlighting the benefits and challenges that they experience in chess.

Women’s World Chess Championship was held in the Espinos Palace Hotel in Tehran, Iran, from February 10 (day of arrival) to March 4 (day of departure) 2017. 63 players (excluding Ms.Foisor, who passed away just few weeks before championship) from 28 countries participated in the WWCC2017. However, a number of regions experienced setbacks due to a hardened and increasingly shrewd authoritarian response to these move- ments. While the number of countries ranked as free in 2012 was 90, a gain of three over the previous year, 27 countries showed significant declines, compared with 16 that showed notable gains. This is the seventh consecutive year that Freedom in the World has shown more declines than gains worldwide.     Monday 22 January - Thursday 1 February 2018 Round 7 Report: Monday 29 January 2018 - by John Saunders (@JohnChess) Howelling Gale in Gibraltar The Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival can usually reckon to be the major local news story for its duration but today we were upstaged by the elements. A howling gale blew across the rock all day, ripping scaffolding from high buildings, bringing rocks down from on high, flooding low-lying areas of the docks and closing roads either side of the chess venue so that many players other than we lucky people who reside in the Caleta Hotel were unable to journey to the venue on time. The organisers took prompt action to ensure that play in round seven went ahead on time where two players were at the board, and where one or both players were missing, the players were granted an hour's grace so that they could start as late as 4pm rather than the appointed start time of 3pm. As it turned out, this concession was sufficient to allow all bar one of the competitors in the Masters to get to the board and start their game without losing time on their clock. Thankfully the venue hotel was unaffected by the raging storm and there were no power cuts or other service deficiencies. To the play: last year's winner Hikaru Nakamura was content with a draw against Mikhail Antipov of Russia and he now shares the lead with David Howell of England. Nakamura's game was surprisingly anaemic, with the US player eschewing his usual sharp play and going for a sedate line of the Tarrasch French which made it relatively easy for Antipov to steer towards a draw.

The other three – Humpy Koneru, Hou Yifan and Aleksandra Kosteniuk – were here and in a great mood. Young Chinese even declined the help of the translator of the team, trying to answer all the questions in English herself. And it was more than good for the first time! As usual, Kosteniuk talked a lot and interesting. While Koneru, and it is yet a tradition too, almost did not say a word… Press-officer of FIDE Peter Rajcsanyi started this press-conference from offering the journalists to applause the girls who already put their names in the history of chess.

    NEWSLETTER 75 (May 14, 2012) THE CROATIAN CHESS FEDERATION RECEIVED THE ECU SILVER MEDAL ON THE OCCASION OF 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FOUNDING A ceremony was held at Four points by Sheraton Hotel in Zagreb on the occasion of 100th anniversary of the founding of the Croatian Chess Federation. Many famous people from the history and present of the Croatian chess attended the celebration, as well as the Mayor of Zagreb, Mr. Milan Bandic and the member of the International Olympic Committee, Mr. Anton Vrdoljak. ECU Executive Director Mr. Vladimir Sakotic also attended the ceremony on behalf of the President of the European Chess Union, Mr. Silvio Danailov. © Europechess.net Page 1 On the occasion of this great jubilee, the European Chess Union awarded the highest recognition to the Croatian Chess Federation – the silver medal. Presenting this award to the President of the Croatian Chess Federation Mr. Stjepan Sturlan, Mr. Sakotic said: - We are very pleased with the cooperation with the Croatian Chess Federation. I believe that a new and strong partnership is ahead of us – the implementation of chess in schools in Croatia. Thereby we would lay a strong foundation for another century of the Croatian chess. At the end of ceremony, deserving individuals and institutions received appropriate recognitions. A special recognition for the contribution to the development of chess in Croatia was awarded to the European Chess Union.     1 WOMEN’S WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP NALCHIK, 28th AUGUST- 18TH SEPTEMBER 2008. In the Presidental Board Meeting, held in Athen 31st May & 1st June, 2008 the FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov advised that the Women’s World Championship would be organized in Nalchik, Kabardino- Balkaria, Russia from 28th August to 18th September, 2008. The FIDE PB has approved the list of qualifiers and the schedule of the World Women's Championship 2008. All qualifiers must send signed Undertaking to the FIDE Secretariat by the deadline of 17 June 2008. The list of 64 Players was published on the FIDE website, then 3rd July 2008 the pairings of the 1st Round and the Pairings Tree for the Championship. On 1st August American player, Irina Krush inform the FIDE about her withdrawal from the Women’s World Championship, then the organizers has a big problem after the unfortunate events in South Ossetia, the Georgian players not get permission from their govornment. Before this crisis emerged, there were some speculations that Nalchik is not a safe place and some of the players were afraid to travel there.
