NEWSLETTER 75 (May 14, 2012) NEWSLETTER 75 (May 14, 2012) THE CROATIAN CHESS FEDERATION RECEIVED THE ECU SILVER MEDAL ON THE OCCASION OF 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF ITS FOUNDING A ceremony was held at Four points by Sheraton Hotel in Zagreb on the occasion of 100th anniversary of the founding of the Croatian Chess Federation. Many famous people from the history and present of the Croatian chess attended the celebration, as well as the Mayor of Zagreb, Mr. Milan Bandic and the member of the International Olympic Committee, Mr. Anton Vrdoljak. ECU Executive Director Mr. Vladimir Sakotic also attended the ceremony on behalf of the President of the European Chess Union, Mr. Silvio Danailov. © Europechess.net Page 1 On the occasion of this great jubilee, the European Chess Union awarded the highest recognition to the Croatian Chess Federation – the silver medal. Presenting this award to the President of the Croatian Chess Federation Mr. Stjepan Sturlan, Mr. Sakotic said: - We are very pleased with the cooperation with the Croatian Chess Federation. I believe that a new and strong partnership is ahead of us – the implementation of chess in schools in Croatia. Thereby we would lay a strong foundation for another century of the Croatian chess. At the end of ceremony, deserving individuals and institutions received appropriate recognitions. A special recognition for the contribution to the development of chess in Croatia was awarded to the European Chess Union. Official website: www.europechess.net IM BELA KHOTENASHVILI WON THE 69TH GEORGIAN WOMEN’S CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP IM Bela Khotenashvili won the 69th Georgian Women’s Chess Championship with the final result of 8 points from possible 11. Second finished WIM Meri Arabidze on a point distance from the winner. Third is WGM Nino Batsiashvili with 6.5 points. This is the first title for Khotenashvili. Official website: www.gcf.org.ge GM EVGENIJ MIROSHNICHENKO WON THE SEMIFINAL OF THE UKRAINIAN MEN’S CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP’2012 GM Evgenij Miroshnichenko won the Semifinal of the Ukrainian Men’s Chess Championship’2012. His final result was 7 points. Second finished GM Yuriy Kuzubov, third – GM Anton Korobov – both with 7 points. The semifinal, organized by the Ukrainian Chess Federation, was held on May 04-12, 2012 in Alushta, Ukraine. The Chief- Arbiter was IA Sergey Polessky. Karlovych (UKR) MATTERS DISCUSSED At the beginning of the meeting, we addressed the items discussed in the official WOM report submitted to FIDE. The Chairperson (Ms. Polgar) especially praised FIDE for the Women’s World Blitz and Rapid Championships in Saudi Arabia which had a substantially increased prize fund, though it was only one third of the prize in the Open section. The total prize fund in the Women’s championships were $250,000 for each event. Beatriz Marinello reported on her project “Smart Girl” on behalf of the Social Action commission, which included projects in Uganda, Chile, France and the US. This projects seeks to increase participation by girls in chess in those countries. Martha Fierro elaborated on the project about chess in women prisons in Genoa, Italy, which involved the training of refugees in Italy who in turn, train women prisoners. Sophia Rohde from the United States shared some of the work their federation is in doing to promote chess for girls in the USA. They subsequently presented a video showing various interviews with young girls in chess, highlighting the benefits and challenges that they experience in chess.

    1 WOMEN’S WORLD CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP NALCHIK, 28th AUGUST- 18TH SEPTEMBER 2008. In the Presidental Board Meeting, held in Athen 31st May & 1st June, 2008 the FIDE President, Kirsan Ilyumzhinov advised that the Women’s World Championship would be organized in Nalchik, Kabardino- Balkaria, Russia from 28th August to 18th September, 2008. The FIDE PB has approved the list of qualifiers and the schedule of the World Women's Championship 2008. All qualifiers must send signed Undertaking to the FIDE Secretariat by the deadline of 17 June 2008. The list of 64 Players was published on the FIDE website, then 3rd July 2008 the pairings of the 1st Round and the Pairings Tree for the Championship. On 1st August American player, Irina Krush inform the FIDE about her withdrawal from the Women’s World Championship, then the organizers has a big problem after the unfortunate events in South Ossetia, the Georgian players not get permission from their govornment. Before this crisis emerged, there were some speculations that Nalchik is not a safe place and some of the players were afraid to travel there. Statement of the Chairman of Organizing Commitee of the WWCC 2008, Arsen Kanokov on 14th August: „Organizing Committee of the Women’s World Chess Championship 2008 is deeply disappointed and bewildered by the attempts of some circles by no means spots ones to break up the competition of the strongest women chess players of the world scheduled to be held in Nalchik. Sharing entirely and fully attitude of FIDE and European Chess Union toward an open letter of Georgian women chess players, we believe that representatives of a famous chess school shouldn't be pawns in somebody's unworthy game.
