Fact Sheet ST-47 November 1993 Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’ ‘Red Sunset’ Red Maple1 Edward F. Gilman and Dennis G. Watson2 INTRODUCTION ‘Red Sunset’ and ‘October Glory’ have proven to be the best cultivars of Red Maple for the south (Fig. 1). ‘Red Sunset’ has strong wood and is a vigorous, fast-grower, reaching a height of 50 feet with a spread of 25 to 35 feet. Trees are often seen shorter in the southern part of its range unless located on a wet site. This tree is preferred over Red Maple, Silver Maple or Boxelder when a fast-growing maple is needed, and will take on a pyramidal or oval silhouette. The newly emerging red flowers and fruits signal that spring has come. They appear in December and January in Florida, later in the northern part of its range. Leaves retain an attractive high gloss throughout the growing season. The seeds of ‘Red Sunset’ Red Maple are quite popular with squirrels and birds. Aloha Chemical Sunset Properties of Solutions SCIENTIFIC

Aloha Chemical Sunset Properties of Solutions SCIENTIFIC Introduction Watch as the sun sets over a chemical reaction! The reaction of sodium thiosulfate with hydrochloric acid produces ele- mental sulfur, which precipitates from solution to form a colloidal mixture. When the reaction is carried out on an over- head projector, the light from the projector is scattered by the colloidal sulfur particles and produces a multicolored chemi- cal sunset. Concepts • Colloid • Light scattering • Tyndall effect Materials Hydrochloric acid solution, 1 M, HCl, 8 mL Petri dish, 100 × 15 mm Sodium thiosulfate solution, 0.2 M, Na2S2O3, 14 mL Overhead projector Graduated cylinder, 25-mL Scissors Paper Tropical sunset cutout Safety Precautions Hydrochloric acid is moderately toxic by ingestion and inhalation and is corrosive to eyes and skin. Sodium thiosulfate solution is a body tissue irritant. The sulfur produced in this reaction has low toxicity but may be a skin and mucous membrane irritant. The smell of the sulfur may become irritating—transfer the Petri dish to the hood when the demonstration is over. The reaction also produces sulfur dioxide gas, which is a skin and eye irritant. Wear chemical splash goggles, chemical-resistant gloves, and a chemical-resistant apron. Please review current Material Safety Data Sheets for additional safety, handling, and disposal information. Preparation Prepare 0.2 M sodium thiosulfate solution by dissolving 5.0 g of sodium thiosulfate pentahydrate, Na2S2O35H2O, in 100 mL of distilled or deionized water. Procedure 1. Trace a circle the size of the Petri dish on a piece of opaque paper and cut out the circle to provide a “frame” for the chemical sun- set (Figure 1a).

The Above Are Lyrics Taken from the Tune Sunrise, Sunset —A Well-Known Song from the Theatrical Production Fiddler on the Roof

Yard and Garden - 02-02-2013 - Ted Griess / Extension Horticulture Assistant Sunrise, sunset Sunrise, sunset Swiftly flow the days. Seedlings turn overnight to sunflowers Blossoming even as we gaze. The above are lyrics taken from the tune Sunrise, Sunset —a well-known song from the theatrical production Fiddler on the Roof. Of late these lyrics have been bouncing around in my head, not because I’ve recently attended the theater; but, rather, I have been passionately observing the remarkable production Mother Nature has been providing us. I am reasonably sure this keen awareness is due to my dislike for winter and a longing for spring when I can again garden. As I arise in the dark each morning, I usually walk into my home office and check our outdoor thermometer. Observing how cold the outdoors temperature is, I generally utter a shivering “B-r-r” and head directly to our living room to light a fire in our fireplace. By the time a nice flame is flickering, Rita joins me with a hot cup of coffee and there we sit, enjoying the warmth, chatting and planning our day. Later, as the morning sun begins to rise above the horizon, I frequently find myself gazing out our windows to the east, marveling at the beautiful red and orange colors that streak across the gray-blue dawning sky. Sunrise in my backyard What a breath- taking sight it is, and how awe-struck I am. Fortunately, this amazing display often repeats itself near the end of the day— a miraculous spectacle we call sunset.
