Age-Friendly Alberta: Strathcona County Community Profile
Age-Friendly Alberta Strathcona County Community Profile Strathcona County’s Social Sustainability Framework identified the need for a seniors plan to prepare for shifting demographics. In response, the County developed the Older Adults Plan, approved by Council on June 30, 2009. The plan uses the community’s strength as a base for building an age-friendly and caring community that values and supports its older residents. The plan promotes aging well, with independence, by providing the right programs, services and supports to meet the needs of older adults. The development of this 15-year plan involved extensive community consultation, an analysis of Strathcona County’s older adult population, and a review of other agency, provincial and federal programs and research. As part of fulfilling the Plan’s identified strategies, a coordinating committee plans and coordinates services and programs across municipal departments and sectors. The Plan is re-visited by the County on a regular basis and consultation is on-going through the Seniors Advisory Committee, the Accessibility Advisory Committee, Family and Community Services clients and local service providers. On June 6, 2013, Strathcona County was the first community Older Adults Plan Vision to receive the Age-Friendly Alberta Recognition Award. Strathcona County is an age-friendly and caring community that values the contributions and strengths of older adults, is responsive to their diverse needs and desire for choice, and provides a spectrum of opportunities for active and purposeful lives. RESPONDING TO THE CALL 2013/14 COMMUNITY REPORT MEDICAL MUSCLE When STARS introduced the AW139 to our patients in 2013, it didn’t take long to see the tangible difference it was making in hundreds of lives. With the capabilities of our AW139s, we’re not only flying faster, further and stopping to refuel less often; STARS is travelling to some communities more than ever. Our expanded flight range means we can respond to emergencies in places we rarely landed previously. For instance, we took 13 flights to Medicine Hat in the first six months of 2014, compared with four flights in all of 2013; we made eight flights to Cold Lake in the first six months of 2014, compared with seven flights in all of 2013 and there were nine flights to Hinton in the first six months of 2014, compared with six flights in all of 2013. Meanwhile, our air medical crew members celebrate the increased space for them to work in while saving lives. (AW139 pictured at right). Our patients deserve the best STARS can offer. “With this additional range, speed and access, the AW139 is like a security blanket of coverage for our patients,” said paramedic Greg Barton, who has been with STARS in Calgary for 14 years. Barton was also part of the internal STARS’ team that developed the medical interior design to meet the complex needs of critically ill and injured patients. STARS currently has three AW139s in our fleet: one each based in Edmonton and Calgary, AB, of which nearly $27 million of the funds needed to purchase the The AW139 flies further, faster and has more room to work on patients.

On the shield is a representation of the topography of Alberta rendered in the colours of the University. At the base is a prairie wheat field symbolizing Alberta’s agricultural industry. The wavy gold line above suggests the hills and rivers of Alberta and, in particular, the setting of the University campus. The top of the shield is in gold and separated from the rest of the shield by a line suggesting the Rocky Mountains. The book of learning dominates the design. On the crest is a Grand-Duc d’Amérique, or Great Horned Owl, the provincial bird and an accepted symbol of knowledge. The pronghorn, taken from the Provincial Coat of Arms, and the golden bear, mascot of the University, support the shield.
