I firmly ibelieve that our dedicated philosophy will broaden horizons and contribute towards future successes of all volunteers that embark on our Discovery Work Placement Experiences. During my professional life it has been a pleasure to witness positive progress made by many individuals from a variety of backgrounds. Our UK based team will fly out to Fiji for the duration of your experience, coupled with the support of our country liaison manager (based in Fiji) that way you know you are in good hands. PREPARATION Before you embark on your experience you will attend one of Travel Teachers accredited training courses. During this 4 day course you will develop the knowledge and skills which will assist you in the planning and delivery of your teaching and learning lessons whilst on your placement, this will also provide you with a platform to embark on a teaching career back in the UK. Your preparation will be second to none, led by Travel Teacher's Director your will take part in outstanding training sessions which will equipped you with full confidence in all aspects of your Travel Teacher experience. All returning volunteers are entitled to a discount TRAVEL TEACHER PHILOSOPHY Travel Teacher is a phased model combining education and adventure. This holistic development approach provides our customers with an unique experience like no other. PHASE 1 - LEARN During this phase individuals will be given the opportunity to gain an industry recognised level 3 Teaching Qualification (Award in Education and Training). This will provide an underpinning platform for the Travel Teacher experience. We aim to ensure that all of our volunteers are fully prepared, allowing them to feel confident whilst carrying out their role as an impact assistant. This will ensure that all volunteers make a positive impact throughout the duration of their experience. PHASE 2 - DISCOVER Travel Teacher will provide individuals with an opportunity to 'Discover a wonder of the South Pacific' and visit one of our project destinations in either Fiji or The Cook Islands. This will assist broadening horizons, gaining transferable skills vital for the world of work and will also provide an unforgettable experience and lifelong memories. PHASE 3 - INSPIRE Whilst in Fiji or The Cooks, individuals will participate in a voluntary work placement programme for a minimum of 3 hours per day, 5 days per week at one of our partnered primary schools. Our Volunteers will have the responsibility of planning, teaching and monitoring the progress of the children in one of two development pathways: Physical Literacy (Sport) & Academic Literacy (English). Our Travel Teacher volunteers will contribute in helping the young people have a brighter future. DISCOVER - FIJI Travel Teacher combines learning with exploration. Our embedded discovery itinerary will allow you to experience an adventure of a lifetime whilst immersing yourself in the rich culture of this beautiful island at the heart of the South Pacific. ITINERARY During your spare time our country reps will work hard to ensure that you can enjoy the spectacular sights that Fiji has to offer. We will devise an individualised adventure itinerary to meet your needs and interests, whether its island hopping, visiting the beautiful beaches or going snorkelling in the crystal clear waters of the coral coast amongst other attractions. We will ensure that this experience will be unique and tailored to meet your own needs. Below is an overview of the 2 week project itinerary, an adaptation of this is developed for our 1 week work placement experiences (Please note, the itinerary is subject to adaptation depending on availability of tours and the time of the year­ additional charges may incur for some activities.) DISCOVERY ITINERARY - FIJI (2 WEEKS) DAY 1 BULA!! Upon arrival in Fiji you will be shuttled from Nadi International airport to the village of Namatakula, your transfer will take approx 2 hours, so sit back and enjoy the beautiful scenery on route. Once you have arrived at your village homestay accommodation you will be greeted in traditional Fijian style.

    Community initiative to create employment stability: Vuda and Waya Qoliqoli The communities of Vuda and Waya are the traditional resource owners of a large section of the Mamanuca and lower Yasawa islands, north of Lautoka town, predominant tourism development areas of Fiji. In the 1990s, community leaders, working in partnership with early local tourism pioneers such as Mr Dan Costello (Beachcomber Island), decided that in order to support sustainable development and employment in the area, they would declare no-fishing areas around resorts. Initially, in 1996, three islands were declared no-fishing areas by the traditional leader, the Tui Vuda, Ratu Sir Tavaiqia, who wrote an open letter saying "I confirm that the waters around the islands of Tai, Eluvuka and Kadavu Lailai in Nadi Bay are now either Fisheries Reserves or are to be designated Fisheries Reserves and therefore no fish, shell fish or octopus (sasala ni waitui) are to be taken from those waters in that area of sea being 400 m from the shoreline of those islands." These islands are now known as Beachcomber (Tai), Treasure (Eluvuka) and Bounty (Kadavu Lailai) Island Resorts. To the north, on Wayalailai and Kuata Islands, similar protected areas were formed at Wayalailai Ecohaven, Naqalia Lodge and Kuata Barefoot Island Resort (Fig. 1). Most of these reserves only cover shallow fringing reefs from beach to the deepwater drop off, but a new, larger area including an expanse of open sea and dolphin habitat was declared in February 2017.
