Andrew DeWoody2,12 Abstract Background: Management requires a robust understanding of between- and within-species genetic variability, however such data are still lacking in many species. For example, although multiple population genetics studies of the peregrine falcon (Falco peregrinus) have been conducted, no similar studies have been done of the closely- related prairie falcon (F. mexicanus) and it is unclear how much genetic variation and population structure exists across the species’ range. Furthermore, the phylogenetic relationship of F. mexicanus relative to other falcon species is contested. We utilized a genomics approach (i.e., genome sequencing and assembly followed by single nucleotide polymorphism genotyping) to rapidly address these gaps in knowledge. Results: We sequenced the genome of a single female prairie falcon and generated a 1.17 Gb (gigabases) draft genome assembly. We generated maximum likelihood phylogenetic trees using complete mitochondrial genomes as well as nuclear protein-coding genes. This process provided evidence that F. mexicanus is an outgroup to the clade that includes the peregrine falcon and members of the subgenus Hierofalco. We annotated > 16,000 genes and almost 600,000 high-quality single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the nuclear genome, providing the raw material for a SNP assay design featuring > 140 gene-associated markers and a molecular-sexing marker.

Washington is traditionally portrayed as a pioneer in industrial education. This is not an inaccurate view, but to summarize his life with that description alone reveals a hasty and narrow reading of his work. In truth, his educational program was but a means to the greater end of citizenship as usefulness to one’s fellowmen; but because the mass of the people in a large republic are not and cannot ordinarily be engaged in genuine political activity, Washington promoted a civic ethic designed to endow the common people with the skills and habits necessary for tending to their daily needs while simultaneously preparing them to assume the graver responsibilities of politics. His emphasis on technical training, the nobility of work, and the development of virtue in simplicity and self-restraint therefore served a dual purpose. In making the people prudent and useful to themselves and to each other in their private and social lives, Washington hoped to create a pool of conscientiously effective citizens from which future statesmen could be drawn. Ever since I was a young kid, I invariably find myself passing the time by doodling, drawing, and, on occasion, even painting. In the space between my paper and pencil, and in those moments when inspiration would strike, my imagination would run amok and these bigger-than-life personas - football players and comic book characters and, of course, professional wrestlers - would come to life. I wasn’t aware of this until much later, but for all those years my mother would quietly steal away my drawings, saving them for all prosperity, and perhaps giving her a way to relive all of those memories of me as a child. That’s exactly what happened to me when she showed me those old sketches of Iron Man and Walter Payton and Fred Flintstone and Hulk Hogan. I found myself instantly transported back to a time where things were simpler and characters were real and the art was pure. I get a lot of really similar feelings when I look at the incredible art that Rob Schamberger has shared with 2 foreward us all. How does higher education contribute, positively or negatively, to personal relationships and the risk of isolation and paranoia, institutional approaches to their own permanence, and broad economic-environmental problems? Each of these abysses is analysed in terms of dialogue, and a dialogic approach in higher education is put forward as a way to help us step away from each abyss. Crises and conflicts throughout the twentieth century might have led to a decline in confidence in dialogic approaches in and beyond educational institutions. However, the opposite was the case, and Martin Buber analysed dialogue in the midst of conflict, rather than simply when conflict was concluded. His mid-twentieth century analyses are used, here, to theorise contemporary dialogic higher education. I began this book project as a Senior Capstone, and it ultimately extended beyond what I could complete before I graduated. I continue to work on this larger memoir; until that time, I have selected the following adapted excerpt for formal submission and archival. This adapted excerpt consists of chronologically separated chapters that are linked by place: together, they describe the important role that my experiences on Mount St. Helens have played in shaping my sense of self and perspective on life and living. The excerpts have been edited and extended in order to function more cohesively as a standalone piece, but they are still, at heart, part of a larger picture that has yet to fully take shape. It is my goal and hope that, sooner rather than later, I will be able to complete that picture and place it here as a more fully-realized creative product.
