    Desi Remix: The Plural Dance Cultures of New York’s South Asian Diaspora Ashley Dawson English Department College of Staten Island/CUNY 2800 Victory Blvd. Staten Island, NY 10314 [email protected] On a sweltering August afternoon in 1996, New York City’s Summerstage concert series brought the South Asian dance music known as bhangra to Central Park. South Asian families from all over the tri-state area sunned themselves, jostled for room, and danced in a jam-packed sandy space under sun-dappled plane trees. New York turntablist DJ Rekha added some hometown flavor, spinning bhangra remixes to much applause before the Safri Boys, one of Britain’s hottest bhangra bands, took the stage. Although bhangra remix had been transforming South Asian youth culture in the US at least since the release of UK musician Bally Sagoo’s pathbreaking “Star Crazy” album in 1991, the concert in Central Park was a particular milestone. Here, visible to a broad public, was a display of the compelling cultural forms through which South Asians of the diaspora were articulating new, composite identities. The multiple regional contrasts and tensions that define identity within the subcontinent were harmonized in this diasporic context. The result was a powerful sense of cultural unity and pride. Desi (Hindi for “homeboy” or “homegirl”) culture had definitely arrived.1 Asian culture has been ‘kool’ in Britain for quite some time. Fusion artists like deejays Talvin Singh, State of Bengal, Badmarsh and Shri, Apache Indian, and Bally Sagoo, to name but a few of the crossover stars in Britain’s musical firmament, spearheaded the new Indo-chic which focused mainstream attention on Britain’s bhangra subculture.

In collaboration with Columbia Libraries at Columbia University, and with the support of Founding Partners Gracenote, Incredible Labs, and the Internet Archive, ARC will lead an online project to celebrate Indian music and culture during India Music Week, Oct 6 -13, 2013. ONE MONTH AWAY! In 2011 ARC launched the first “World Music Day” celebrating Islamic music and culture (please see: www.muslimworldmusicday.com ). This online site was accessed by more than two million people worldwide on the initial date and still gets over 2,000 visitors daily. The project was awarded the prestigious "Innovative Use of Archives Award" by the Archivists Round Table of Metropolitan New York. Building on this success ARC next created Brazilian Music Day in 2012. Again millions of fans and music industry people visited this massive research site, www.brazilianmusicday.org while the ARC acquired and catalogued more than 20,000 Brazilian recordings. Building on this success ARC will expand a “Day” into a full India Music “Week.” IMW will be an online website to present, promote and explore the rich cultural heritage of Indian music of the past, present and future.

Two of the nation’s top young conductors, Alexandra Arrieche and Joseph Young, will be sharing the podium to lead the orchestra in the electronic works, along with music from their own cultural heritages: Brazilian and African‐American. These concerts takes a fresh, whimsical approach to disparate musical corners of the globe and is presented in two performances only, Saturday, March 22 at 8 pm at Wentz Concert Hall of North Central College in Naperville (171 E. Chicago Avenue) and Monday, March 24 at 7:30 pm at Orchestra Hall of Symphony Center in downtown Chicago (220 S. Michigan Avenue). Brazilian‐born conductor Alexandra Arrieche opens the concert with two works from her South‐ American roots, Piazzolla’s Fuga y Misterio and Villa‐Lobos’ Bachianas Brasileiras No. 2. Together, these two works provide an opportunity for her and the orchestra to shine before DJ Rekha and Mr. Sharma join them onstage. The first piece to incorporate an electronic element is Pyar Baile, which was originally produced by DJ Rekha and Dave Sharma with recorded vocals by Meetu Chilana and Zuzuka Poderosa.
