FOREWORD This collection of research papers written by Rutgers University undergraduates is an exemplary representation of the rigorous intellec- tual project of critical reading and thinking, careful interpretation, and thoughtful analysis. All the student authors whose work was selected for publication completed their papers in the Rutgers Writing Program course Research in the Disciplines. Their topics range widely in scope and include the censorship threat inherent in limiting net neutrality; the economics of non-profit hospitals; the importance of soccer to the Latinx identity in the United States; and the transformation of graffiti from vandalism to political expression. Importantly, each paper makes an independent argument based on a conceptual analysis developed through the lens of a discipline-based theory. Congratulations to the thoughtful and intelligent writers whose work makes up this volume, and to all the wonderful Rutgers undergraduates who complete exceptional projects each and every semester. Such fine work would not be possible without the dedication and diligence of our Writing Program faculty. Our instructors coach students through every phase of the research writing project, teaching them the fundamentals of information literacy while helping them grow the acorn of an idea into a full-fledged exploration of a scholarly debate. Faculty members work tirelessly to help each student bring an individual project to fruition, from research proposal through three drafts and an oral pre- sentation, culminating with the final paper. I cannot express how grateful I am to the talented, devoted professionals with whom I am privileged to work. Dialogues@RU is a student-centered endeavor. The Editorial Board members you see listed on the masthead are all undergraduate students who participated in a semester-long Editing Internship. In the internship, students learn the basics of the editorial process by selecting manuscripts for publication (from among nearly 250 submissions) and working with student writers through the substantive and technical edit- ing process. My experience with interns over the years has been inspiring. They bring to the table intelligence and a willingness to learn and work hard as well as creative insights and quick wit. I am so thankful to be part of their career preparation as internship coordinator along with my iv. brilliant and good-humored colleague, Tracy Budd, who co-edited this volume with me. I must recognize the many faculty members of the Writing Pro- gram who volunteer their time to proofread the final papers before they head off to the printer. This service to the Dialogues@RU project is an invaluable part of the process, and the last set of eyes on the text always helps us catch a few errors before press time. FACEBOOK: A MODERN DAY DIGITAL PANOPTICON — Namita Abraham ABSTRACT This paper analyzes Facebook’s structure and function, and the par- allels between that of the eighteenth-century prison model, the Panopticon. In his seminal work, Discipline and Punish, Michael Foucault expanded on Jeremy Bentham’s Panopticon and stressed the architectural significance of such a structure. Arguably, a similar framework is used by Facebook. The current paper addresses the larger implications behind such similarities using Erving Goffman’s Presentation of Self Theory in order to explain the overall effects a panoptic structure has on its users. The following series of issues will be examined: why our digital interactions are a significant piece of our identity, factors that influence us to adjust or change our identities online, and how Facebook molds our identity in a similar manner as the Panopticon. It is argued that as a digital Panopticon, Facebook limits a user’s right to privacy, and alters the behavior and identity of its users. In the Internet age, it is feasible to think that our digital footprint adds to our very being and identity whether we like it or not. We con- stantly collect data about ourselves and leave little breadcrumbs that give clues about who we are through our interactions on the internet. Because of this aspect of new technology and innovation, privacy has emerged as a fundamental human right. While it was always universally cherished, technology has begun to erode our privacy much faster than it can be protected. Social media has emerged as a dominant force through which our privacy is lost: this comes as a surprise to many, as social media is generally viewed simply as a means of self-expression. Facebook, in par- ticular, which boasts over 2 billion active users monthly, has come under severe scrutiny regarding the level of privacy it affords its users. But what kind of privacy is being breached by this service? Is it simply one that would allow us to conceal information from others? Or is it something that has a much more significant impact on our very being and identi- ty? In my research, I will evaluate Facebook and compare its structural similarities, and its overall effects on its users, to a Panopticon. First, I 1 will explain why our digital interactions contribute to the creation of our identity and why we should be afforded a level of privacy as a result. I will then address the idea of identity through the lens of Erving Goffman’s theory of the Presentation of the Self. More specifically, I will touch on specific factors that cause us to adjust our identities online, as well as ways in which Facebook facilitates this. Finally, in my concluding section, I will focus on Facebook itself, using Michael Foucault’s analysis of Bentham’s Panopticon. Exploring the similarities between the two structures, one physical and one virtual, will present a distinct correlation between a decades-old prison structure and a current social media site. I argue that Facebook is a digital Panopticon, not only limiting our right to privacy, but also leaving us constantly visible, and thereby altering our behavior and our identity. The formation of our identity is a dynamic and personal process in which our digital interactions play an integral part shaping and mold- ing that identity. But we can also think of ourselves as having a separate identity existing in the digital world. The “digital persona,” developed by Roger Clarke, is defined as “a model of an individual’s public personality based on data and maintained by transactions, and intended for use as a proxy for the individual” (3). In other words, it encompasses the aspects of an individual established through the collection and analysis of that person’s data. In theory, this persona could be used as a “proxy” for the physical being. Jeroen Van den Hoven and Pieter E. Vermaas further extend this idea to an argument about transactional identities: “although a market mechanism for trading personal data seems to be kicking in on a global scale, not all individual consumers are aware of this economic opportunity, and if they do, they are not always trading their data in a transparent and fair market environment” (182). Our data have become items which can be sold. Some may argue that sharing our data and information about ourselves with web browsers, stores, and websites has benefits that may include carefully targeted discounts and rewards. While this is true, it does not discredit the Van de Hoven and Vermaas’ argument that many consumers are still unaware of how they are being commodified, and “do not always know what the implications are of what they are consenting to when they sign a contract,” whether that contract is literal or implicit (Van de Hoven 286).

Earlier his month, jurors issued an advisory ruling in favor of the plaintiffs—21 artists who sued real-estate developer Jerry Wolkoff after he whitewashed and demolished his warehouses in Long Island City, Queens. Until it came down in 2014, the complex, known as 5Pointz, had stood for more than a decade as an open-air museum of graffiti art by some of the medium’s most revered practitioners. The Brooklyn federal court judge presiding over the case will now decide whether the landlord is liable and the artists are entitled to damages. That decision is expected in December or January. The plaintiffs haven’t asked for a specific amount, but could win several million dollars in damages. But even before the case is resolved, legal observers are marking the jury ruling as a possible watershed moment in the interpretation of a seldom-used federal law called the Visual Artists Rights Act.

By providing insights into lesser-known studies concerning user curiosity and surveillance online, the present research reveals that the terms ‘monitoring’ and ‘keeping up with’ or ‘keeping in touch with’ are most commonly used when referring to social searches within social networks; only when asked to think about surveillance in terms of stalking did interview participants refer to it as such. The present study aims to discover Facebook users’ perception of their friends’ disclosure while delving into the idea of “Facebook stalking”, specifically with regard to how users define it. Facebook’s evolution and prominence in the public sphere is dependent upon user satisfaction with and general understanding of the functionality of social networking websites. Ballard’s Running Wild CORNELIA MACSINIUC University of Suceava Abstract My essay proposes a reading of J.G. Ballard’s 1988 novella Running Wild as a cautionary crime story, a parable about the self-fulfilling prophecies of contemporary urban fears and about the “prisons” they create in a consumerist, technology- and media-dominated civilization. Interpreted in the light of Foucault’s concept of panopticism, Ballard’s gated community as a crime setting reveals how a disciplinary pedagogy meant to obtain “docile bodies,” masked under the socially elitist comfort of affluence and parental care, “brands” the inmate-children as potential delinquents and ultimately drives them to an act of “mass tyrannicide.” Ballard uses the murder story as a vehicle for the exploration of the paradoxical effects of a regime of total surveillance and of mediated presence, which, while expected to make “murder mystery” impossible, allows for the precession of the representation to the real (crime). The essay also highlights the way in which Ballard both cites and subverts some of the conventions of the Golden Age detective fiction, mainly by his rejection of the latter’s escapist ethos and by the liminal character of his investigator, at once part of a normalizing panoptic apparatus and eccentric to it, a “poetic figure” (Chesterton) relying on imagination and “aestheticizing” the routines of the detection process. In this article, we discuss a range of strategic information-management options available to individuals and institutions in the networked society, and contrast these ‘blueprints’ to Foucault’s well-known Panopticon model. We organize these observations and analyses within a new conceptual framework based on the geometry of ‘information flux,’ or the premise that the net flow of information between an individual and a network is as relevant to power dynamics as the nature or volume of that information. Based on this geometrical model, we aim to develop a lexicon for the design, description, and critique of socio-technical systems. An epidemic of stress, overwork, waste and indebtedness caused by dogged pursuit of the Australian dream. 3. An unsustainable addiction to economic growth.1 Wanting In 2004 the Australian economy grew by over $25 billion, yet the tenor of public debate suggests that the country is in a dire situation. We are repeatedly told of funding shortages for hos- pitals, schools, universities and public transport, and politicians constantly appeal to that icon of Australian spirit, the ‘Aussie battler’. Political rhetoric and social commentary continue to emphasise deprivation—as if we are living in the nineteenth century and the problems facing the country have arisen because we are not rich enough. When the Labor Party lost the federal election in 2004 it declared that, like the conservatives, it must pay more attention to growth and the economy. It would seem that achieving an economic growth rate of 4 per cent is the magic potion to cure all our ills. But how rich do we have to be before we are no longer a nation of battlers? Australia’s GDP has doubled since 1980; at 3 Affluenza - pages 6/4/05 9:03 AM Page 4 AFFLUENZA a growth rate of 3 per cent, it will double again in 23 years and quadruple 23 years after that. Will our problems be solved then? Or will the relentless emphasis on economic growth and higher incomes simply make us feel more dissatisfied? In the private domain, Australia is beset by a constant rumble of complaint—as if we are experiencing hard times.

Antenarrative is defined as a prestory, an anticipatory bet that the world can be changed in profitable and sometimes progressively humane ways. You are schooled in linear and cyclical Globalization antenarratives, but may not of heard of the rhizome antenarrative. A linear antenarrative tells either a tale of Road to the Top (life just keep getting progressively better) versus a Road to the Bottom (life may be better for the wealthy, but the poor get poorer, & and earth’s resources are being destroyed). Of the two linear narratives, the Business College sells you on the former, the evolution of a succession of Globalizations from imperialisms to empires, where transnational corporations are succeeding nation-states in a world governmentability through the likes of World Trade Organization (WTO), and through contractual trade agreements such as NAFTA. You are exposed to the other linear narrative, Road to Bottom, through TV, watching those protestors outside WTO annual meetings proclaim that transnational corporations are the ruination of living wages, democracy, and Mother Earth. Cyclical Globalization antenarratives pose a different bet, a plot of eternal recurrence (to use Nietzsche’s phrase). Globalization is not a line, not a succession of progressive evolution, where Enlightenment and reason, science and technology, are able to bring about world peace and harmony. Linear Globalization to the cyclical theorists is just illusion, entangled error, not even a persuasive narrative.

  • Teaching Eighteenth-Century French Literature: the Good, the Bad and the Ugly
    Eighteenth-Century Modernities: Present Contributions and Potential Future Projects from EC/ASECS (The 2014 EC/ASECS Presidential Address) by Christine Clark-Evans It never occurred to me in my research, writing, and musings that there would be two hit, cable television programs centered in space, time, and mythic cultural metanarrative about 18th-century America, focusing on the 1760s through the 1770s, before the U.S. became the U.S. One program, Sleepy Hollow on the FOX channel (not the 1999 Johnny Depp film) represents a pre- Revolutionary supernatural war drama in which the characters have 21st-century social, moral, and family crises. Added for good measure to several threads very similar to Washington Irving’s “Legend of Sleepy Hollow” story are a ferocious headless horseman, representing all that is evil in the form of a grotesque decapitated man-demon, who is determined to destroy the tall, handsome, newly reawakened Rip-Van-Winkle-like Ichabod Crane and the lethal, FBI-trained, diminutive beauty Lt. Abigail Mills. These last two are soldiers for the politically and spiritually righteous in both worlds, who themselves are fatefully inseparable as the only witnesses/defenders against apocalyptic doom.     forthcoming, American Economic Review Digital Dystopia∗ Jean Tirole† December 17, 2020 Abstract: Autocratic regimes, democratic majorities, private platforms and religious or professional organizations can achieve social control by managing the flow of information about individuals' behavior. Bundling the agents' political, organizational or religious attitudes with information about their prosocial conduct makes them care about behaviors that they otherwise would not. The incorporation of the individuals' social graph in their social score further promotes soft control but destroys the social fabric. Both bundling and guilt by association are most effective in a society that has weak ties and is politically docile.
