Men compete on six apparatus: floor exercise, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar. Women compete on four apparatus: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor exercise. There are four competition phases in artistic gymnastics: qualifications, team final, all-around final, and apparatus finals. Qualifications: All gymnasts compete as part of a team and/or as individuals and the results of this phase are used to qualify gymnasts for the team, all-around and the apparatus finals. No scores are carried over from the qualifications to the finals. Team results are based on the three best gymnast scores on each apparatus. Team final: The top eight teams from qualifications proceed to the team final. The teams compete again on all apparatus and the teams with the highest total scores are awarded the medals. All-around final: The top 24 gymnasts from qualifications (maximum two per NOC) proceed to the all-around final. The gymnasts perform again on all apparatus and those with the highest scores are awarded the medals in the all-around. The all-around title is considered to be the premium achievement in gymnastics. Apparatus finals: The eight gymnasts who placed highest on each apparatus in qualifications (maximum two per NOC) proceed to the apparatus finals. The gymnasts perform again on each apparatus and those with the highest scores are awarded the individual medals for each apparatus. DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE FIG WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE OLYMPIC GAMES There is a restriction on entry to the Olympic Games. Only the top 12 men's and women's teams and a designated number of nations with individuals, who qualified through the FIG qualification system, can participate at the Olympic Games, whereas the world championships are open to all FIG member federations. The Olympic Games, therefore, have fewer competitors than the world championships. At the world championships, teams consist of five gymnasts, and countries with a team cannot have additional individual gymnasts. At the Olympic Games, teams consist of four gymnasts and these NOCs may have one or two additional individual gymnasts. CHANGES SINCE THE RIO 2016 OLYMPIC GAMES Team size has changed from five to four gymnasts, with possibly one or two additional individual gymnasts for NOCs with teams. The qualification system for the Olympic Games has changed. GAR --------------------------- --_02A Report Created THU 1 JUL 2021 09:30 Page 1 of 4 Ariake Gymnastics Centre Artistic Gymnastics 有明体操競技場 体操競技 / Gymnastique artistique Centre de gymnastique d'Ariake SPORT RULES AND PROCEDURES Judging Artistic gymnastics is a judged sport with a panel of nine judges presiding over each apparatus. The nine judges are broken down into two panels to calculate the "F" (final score). The "D" (difficulty) panel (two judges) calculates the D Score which is the score a gymnast receives based on the content of the routine. The "E" (execution) panel (five judges) determines deductions from the maximum possible score (10.00) based on the gymnast's execution of the routine. Two reference judges have been introduced to establish an automatic and time-saving correction system in case of significant deviations with execution scores. All judges will be appointed by the FIG. Calculation of scores Definitions: - E-score: The judges' scores for execution are averaged after the highest and lowest E judges' scores have been deleted. - R-score: The reference score is calculated by taking the average of the two reference judges' scores. If the difference between the marks of the two reference judges exceeds the pre-defined tolerances, the R-score is not taken into account at all (i.e. the calculation of the E-score is done the "traditional" way and the execution jury score will remain unchanged). The E-score and the R-score are compared according to the reference judges' system (RJS). If the gap between the E-score and the R-score exceeds the pre-defined tolerances, the E-score will be replaced by the average of the R-score and the E-score. Otherwise the execution judges' score remains unchanged. D + E – Penalties (if any) = F Example: D-score: 6.00 E-score: 9.30 (calculated from: 9.10, 9.20, 9.60, 9.30, 9.40) Final Score: 6.00 + 9.30 = 15.30 Tiebreak rules The FIG tiebreaking rules are presented in the FIG technical regulations and define how to break ties in case of equality of points. In artistic gymnastics, the main principles are the following: - Qualification for all-around final - All-around final In case of a tie for any place, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria: 1. The gymnast with the highest sum of the final apparatus scores will prevail (i.e. add the total of the five, four, three, two, one of the highest final apparatus scores for men, or the total of the three, two, one of the highest final apparatus scores for women). 2. The gymnast with the highest total E-score (execution) by adding all apparatus will prevail. 3. The gymnast with the highest total D-score (difficulty) by adding all apparatus will prevail. 4. If they remain tied, the gymnasts will share the same classification. The gymnast with the highest E-score (execution) will prevail. 2. The gymnast with the highest D-score (difficulty) will prevail. 3. If they remain tied, the gymnasts will share the same classification. - Qualification for vault final - Vault final If a tie occurs, ties will be broken by the following criteria: 1. The gymnast with the highest score of the two vaults before the average for the final score will prevail. 2. The gymnast with the highest E-score (execution) of either vault will prevail. 3. The gymnast with the highest D-score (difficulty) of either vault will prevail. 4. If they remain tied, the gymnasts will share the same classification. - Qualification for team final - Team final In case of a tie at any place, ties will be broken by the following criteria: 1. The team with the highest sum of the team apparatus counting scores obtained will prevail (i.e. the total of five, four, three, two, one highest apparatus team scores for men and the total of three, two, one highest apparatus team scores for women). 2. If they remain tied, the teams will share the same classification. If ties for the last qualification place(s) for a final cannot be broken by the above criteria, all tied gymnasts/teams will progress to the final. Penalties/disqualification rules Penalties can be imposed on either an individual gymnast, or on a team as a whole, depending on the infraction: • Individual penalties can include, for example, going out of bounds on the floor exercise, exceeding a time limit for a routine, exceeding the limited time for warm up, or for exceeding the allowed time for resuming a performance after having fallen from an apparatus.

Women's Artistic Gymnastics There are four events in Women's Artistic Gymnastics – Vault, Uneven Bars, Balance Beam and Floor Exercise. Although most sports have seasons, gymnastics is a year-round commitment for athletes at the upper levels. Vault A successful vault begins with a strong, accelerated run. The best vaulters explode off the springboard with tremendous quickness during the pre-flight phase of the vault. When the gymnast pushes off of the vault table (also informally referred to as the horse) judges look for proper body position and instantaneous propulsion and explosive force. They watch the height and distance traveled as well as the number of flips and twists. Gymnasts strive to stick their landing by taking no extra steps. Uneven Bars Many consider the uneven bars the most spectacular of women's events, since to be successful the gymnasts must display strength as well as concentration, courage, coordination and split-second timing.

However, Williams has established OU as the nation’s elite program with five national titles in the last seven years, claiming crowns in 2002, 2003, 2005, 2006 and most recently in 2008. The Sooners have also enjoyed international success with Williams at the helm as he helped train two Olympic medal winners. Jonathan Horton (Beijing 2008) and Guard Young (Athens 2004) represented the U.S. in the last two Olympic Games. Williams was named the head coach at Oklahoma in 2000 and has positioned the program SOONERS UNDER WILLIAMS as a national contender every year with an overall mark of 223-18 (.925) in nine seasons. Judges steeped in the sport and committed to judging the British Gymnastics Men’s Artistic Gymnastics (MAG) programme. National Judge Very involved, having passed a difficult examination. Expected to judge all codes at regional level and at least ‘E’ jury at national level. Regional Judge This handbook is the bulk of the syllabus. Judging all apparatus as ‘E’ jury at regional level, and floor as ‘D’ jury. There is also some setwork judging. A 2½-day course with examination. A parent with no background will find this hard until they have judged/been involved for a while. A coach or gymnast should be able to absorb the material. Minimum age: 18 years (16 years with suitable experience and MJP approval). Club Judge An introductory level in the form of a 1-day course. Parents/busy coaches start here. Minimum age: 14 years.
