ART JAMEEL ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF CULTURUNNERS, AN INDEPENDENT ARTISTS’ EXPEDITION AND CORE COMPONENT OF EDGE OF ARABIA’S US TOUR, AT THE ROTHKO CHAPEL IN HOUSTON Art Jameel announces the launch of CULTURUNNERS an independent artists' expedition and core component of Edge of Arabia's US Tour, at the Rothko Chapel in Houston Set to coincide with the UN’s International Day of Peace, CULTURUNNERS begins its journey in Houston with an evening of discussion and film screenings at the Rothko Chapel on September 21st, 2014 New York (July 10, 2014) – On the occasion of the United Nation’s International Day of Peace – September 21, 2014 – the Rothko Chapel, in partnership with Art Jameel, will host the launch of CULTURUNNERS, an independent artists’ expedition and core component of Edge of Arabia’s US Tour. In the spirit of the Chapel’s humanist mission to inspire people to action through art and contemplation and to provide a forum for global concerns, this event brings together pioneering artists, scholars and community groups to cultivate new perspectives on cultural collaboration. This collaborative event, which is a core component of Edge of Arabia’s multi-year journey between the Middle East and the United States, aims to assess the potential of artists’ journeys to connect people through creativity and beyond identities defined by culture, religion, nation, citizenship, economic status, profession, gender or age. Supported by FotoFest International and the Arab American Cultural and Community Center of Houston (ACC), the evening kicks off with an inter-generational, cross-cultural discussion on the role of artists’ journeys in generating positive social change. -

THE MENIL COLLECTION CELEBRATES 30th ANNIVERSARY WITH LUMINOUS BALL HONORING CHAIR AND LIFE TRUSTEE LOUISA STUDE SAROFIM Event Raises More Than $2.5 Million in Table and Ticket Sales 30th Anniversary Celebrations Continue with the Menil Contemporaries’ Surreal Soirée on Friday, December 8 Houston, TX, December 3, 2017 – Under a bright night sky on the eve of the final full moon before the winter solstice, art-world luminaries and patrons from Houston and around the world gathered at the Menil Collection on Saturday evening, December 2, for Luminous: The Menil Collection’s 30th Anniversary Ball. Only the fourth gala celebration at the museum since its opening in 1987, the event honored the Menil Foundation’s Chair and Life Trustee Louisa Stude Sarofim, raising more than $2.5 million in table and ticket sales to support the Menil Collection on the occasion of this anniversary milestone. Said Menil Director Rebecca Rabinow, “Dominique de Menil understood that in order to ensure the Menil Collection’s survival she must appoint a successor who believed as deeply as she did in the importance of the arts to human existence. She needed to find someone who had the intellect, sensitivity, and will to keep the de Menils’ vision alive and relevant—someone courageous enough to alter her own life in order to make the enormous commitment of time, energy, and focus required by the task ahead. A PLATFORM FOR ART AND IDEAS FotoFest® is the first and longest-running citywide, international photographic art Biennial in the United States. It is recognized as one of the most important photography events in the world and a leader in its field. FotoFest is known for its discovery of important but little-known artists, its ability to use art as a platform for important social ideas, and its groundbreaking exhibition and portfolio review programs. Based in Houston, Texas, FotoFest was founded as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit arts and education organization in 1983. 1 FOTOFEST 1983-85 the beginning 2 1983 — Trip to the Rencontres Photographiques d’Arles, the oldest European photography festival, after Wendy Watriss won World Press and Oskar Barnack awards. FotoFest is incorporated. 1984 — FotoFest is created in Houston. FotoFest’s mission emphasizes discovery, internationalism, social commitment, and global/local perspectives. FotoFest is formed to foster creative energy, new opportunities for artists, new audiences for photo-related art and broader visibility for Houston’s cultural resources. Founders are Frederick Baldwin, Wendy Watriss, and German gallery owner Petra Benteler. (Ms. Benteler returned to Germany in 1986.) 1985 — FotoFest brings four of the world’s best known photographers, Helmut Newton, William Klein, Franco Fontana, and Ikko Narahara, to Houston to photograph the Houston Rodeo and Livestock Show. Parties by numerous prominent Houstonians launch FotoFest. FotoFest brings the director of The Mois de la Photo in Paris to Houston to meet Mayor Kathy Whitmire and Houston City Council to receive the keys of the city and announce a collaboration with FotoFest. -

The capital campaign is headed towards a successful con- clusion, and construction has advanced on the Menil Drawing Institute, energy house, and Tadjacent green spaces. Thousands of plants have been added to our grounds alongside a hundred new trees. Our campus is abloom. The Menil Collection’s fiscal year 2016, which extends from July 2015 through June 2016, ended two weeks before my arrival. It was a year of leadership transition. In June 2015, after a successful twelve-year tenure as Director of the Menil, Josef Helfenstein announced his plans to oversee Basel’s renowned Kunstmuseum.
