ART JAMEEL ANNOUNCES THE LAUNCH OF CULTURUNNERS, AN INDEPENDENT ARTISTS’ EXPEDITION AND CORE COMPONENT OF EDGE OF ARABIA’S US TOUR, AT THE ROTHKO CHAPEL IN HOUSTON Art Jameel announces the launch of CULTURUNNERS an independent artists' expedition and core component of Edge of Arabia's US Tour, at the Rothko Chapel in Houston Set to coincide with the UN’s International Day of Peace, CULTURUNNERS begins its journey in Houston with an evening of discussion and film screenings at the Rothko Chapel on September 21st, 2014 New York (July 10, 2014) – On the occasion of the United Nation’s International Day of Peace – September 21, 2014 – the Rothko Chapel, in partnership with Art Jameel, will host the launch of CULTURUNNERS, an independent artists’ expedition and core component of Edge of Arabia’s US Tour. In the spirit of the Chapel’s humanist mission to inspire people to action through art and contemplation and to provide a forum for global concerns, this event brings together pioneering artists, scholars and community groups to cultivate new perspectives on cultural collaboration. This collaborative event, which is a core component of Edge of Arabia’s multi-year journey between the Middle East and the United States, aims to assess the potential of artists’ journeys to connect people through creativity and beyond identities defined by culture, religion, nation, citizenship, economic status, profession, gender or age. Supported by FotoFest International and the Arab American Cultural and Community Center of Houston (ACC), the evening kicks off with an inter-generational, cross-cultural discussion on the role of artists’ journeys in generating positive social change. -

Origins of Canadian Olympic Weightlifting

ORIGINS OF CANADIAN OLYMPIC WEIGHTLIFTING INTRODUCTION The author does not pretend to have written everything about the history of Olympic weightlifting in Canada since Canadian Weightlifting has only one weightlifting magazine to refer to and it is from the Province of Québec “Coup d’oeil sur l’Haltérophilie”, it is understandable that a great number of the articles are about the Quebecers. The researcher is ready to make any modification to this document when it is supported by facts of historical value to Canadian Weightlifting. (Ce document est aussi disponible en langue française) The early history of this sport is not well documented, but weightlifting is known to be of ancient origin. According to legend, Egyptian and Chinese athletes demonstrated their strength by lifting heavy objects nearly 5,000 years ago. During the era of the ancient Olympic Games a Greek athlete of the 6th century BC, Milo of Crotona, gained fame for feats of strength, including the act of lifting an ox onto his shoulders and carrying it the full length of the stadium at Olympia, a distance of more than 200 meters. For centuries, men have been interested in strength, while also seeking athletic perfection. Early strength competitions, where Greek athletes lifted bulls or where Swiss mountaineers shouldered and tossed huge boulders, gave little satisfaction to those individuals who wished to demonstrate their athletic ability. During the centuries that followed, the sport continued to be practiced in many parts of the world. Weightlifting in the early 1900s saw the development of odd-shaped dumbbells and kettle bells which required a great deal of skill to lift, but were not designed to enable the body’s muscles to be used efficiently. -

HETAG Newsletter No 26, October 2018 THE FESTIVAL OF EARLIER HOUSTON ART A year and a half ago some of us (rather naively) designated fall 2018 as The Festival of Earlier Houston Art. We weren’t quite sure what we meant by that, what the Festival would consist of or how we were going to accomplish it, but we had 18 months to do it, so no sweat. Well, the months flew by, and here we are in fall 2018. And, guess what, the Festival of Earlier Houston Art is a reality. Museums and galleries all over town are showing not just art that has been bought-&-brought to Houston (fabulous as that undoubtedly often is), but art MADE in Houston, by Houston artists, going back to the 1850s and coming up to the day just before Contemporary. This is a once-in-our-lifetime opportunity for Houstonians and visitors to Houston to see our own art – the art that is uniquely ours. September 2016 Fame in the Abstract Dorothy Hood was one of Texas’s greatest artists, yet her work remains largely unknown. Now, sixteen years after her death, can her fans bring her the acclaim she never received in life? One of Texas’s most talented artists, she was a stunning strawberry blonde with a fearless sense of adventure. In 1941, fresh out of art school, she drove her dad’s roadster to Mexico City and stayed there for most of the next 22 years, drawing and painting alongside Diego Rivera, Frida Kahlo, Roberto Montenegro, and Miguel Covarrubias. Pablo Neruda wrote a poem about her paintings. José Clemente Orozco befriended and encouraged her. The Bolivian director and composer José María Velasco Maidana fell hard for her and later married her. And after a brief stretch in New York City, she and Maidana moved to her native Houston, where she produced massive paintings of sweeping color that combined elements of Mexican surrealism and New York abstraction in a way that no one had seen before, winning her acclaim and promises from museums of major exhibits. She seemed on the verge of fame. “She certainly is one of the most important artists from that generation,” said art historian Robert Hobbs.
