This report also reviews North Carolina policies specific to introduced species along with determining recommendations for improvements to these policies among state and federally listed species as well as nonlisted animals. FEATURE: ENDANGERED SPECIES Conservation Status of Imperiled North American Freshwater and Diadromous Fishes ABSTRACT: This is the third compilation of imperiled (i.e., endangered, threatened, vulnerable) plus extinct freshwater and diadromous fishes of North America prepared by the American Fisheries Society’s Endangered Species Committee. Since the last revision in 1989, imperilment of inland fishes has increased substantially. This list includes 700 extant taxa representing 133 genera and 36 families, a 92% increase over the 364 listed in 1989. The increase reflects the addition of distinct populations, previously non-imperiled fishes, and recently described or discovered taxa. Approximately 39% of described fish species of the continent are imperiled. There are 230 vulnerable, 190 threatened, and 280 endangered extant taxa, and 61 taxa presumed extinct or extirpated from nature. Of those that were imperiled in 1989, most (89%) are the same or worse in conservation status; only 6% have improved in status, and 5% were delisted for various reasons. Habitat degradation and nonindigenous species are the main threats to at-risk fishes, many of which are restricted to small ranges. Documenting the diversity and status of rare fishes is a critical step in identifying and implementing appropriate actions necessary for their protection and management. Howard L. Tapoco Final Report (FJA) June 2012
Review of the Low Impact Hydropower Institute Application for Re-Certification Tapoco Hydroelectric Project (FERC No.2169) June 29, 2012 - Aluminum company Alcoa Inc. said it will sell its 351MW Tapoco Hydroelectric Project to Brookfield Renewable Energy Partners for $600 million. Tapoco includes four hydroelectric power generating stations and dams on the Little Tennessee and Cheoah rivers in East Tennessee and western North Carolina. The deal also includes 86 miles of transmission line and about 14,500 acres, Alcoa said in a news release. The sale is subject to federal and state regulatory approval. U.S. FISH AND WILDLIFE SERVICE SPECIES ASSESSMENT AND LISTING PRIORITY ASSIGNMENT FORM SCIENTIFIC NAME: Etheostoma maculatum Kirtland COMMON NAME: spotted darter LEAD REGION: Region 3 INFORMATION CURRENT AS OF: July 25, 2011 STATUS/ACTION We determined that threats to spotted darter are not of sufficient imminence, intensity, or magnitude that would cause substantial losses of population distribution or viability. Therefore, it was not elevated to Candidate status. ANIMAL/PLANT GROUP AND FAMILY: Fishes, Percidae HISTORICAL STATES/TERRITORIES/COUNTRIES OF OCCURRENCE: New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia CURRENT STATES/COUNTIES/TERRITORIES/COUNTRIES OF OCCURRENCE: New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, West Virginia LAND OWNERSHIP: Spotted darters are found in perennial streams. Ownership of the bottoms of streams varies; however, perennial streams are typically regulated as state and/or federal jurisdictional waters. Land use decisions throughout entire watersheds can affect fish populations within individual streams. Land ownership within each watershed occupied by spotted darters is variable and comprised of a mix of private, federal, state and other publicly owned land. There is no comprehensive database describing land ownership within the range of the spotted darter. However, the U.S. Forest Service maintains a database of ownership of forested land by county. Some available information for land ownership within the range of the spotted darter follows. New York: No federally owned land occurs in the only county in the range of the spotted darter (Chautauqua County) (United States Forest Service 2008). Approximately 4.3 percent of the forested land in Chautauqua County is state-owned (U.S. Forest Service 2008). -

Environmental conditions influence the structure of lotic communities in the Mid-Atlantic. The Biological Condition Gradient is a conceptual model that describes the condition of waterbodies relative to well-defined levels of condition that are known to vary with levels of disturbance based on the pollution tolerances of aquatic organisms. In biological assessment programs, the tolerance characteristics of the aquatic organisms are part of the determination of overall stream health. This study represents the first phase of statewide BCG development in Virginia by assigning tolerance attributes to many common macroinvertebrates and fish in the Mid-Atlantic. BCG tolerance attributes reflect taxa sensitivity to stream conditions. The attributes (I – X) represent commonness, rarity, regional specialization, tolerance to disturbance, organism condition, ecosystem function and connectivity (Table 1, Appendix A). Attributes I – VI are related to tolerance to disturbance. These are used in BCG models to describe aspects of the community relative to disturbance (Table 2). Attributes I, VI, and X can be assigned to taxa to describe the natural biological condition of a waterbody. -

List of the Freshwater Bivalve species of North Carolina - printed 2021-09-24 This is a listing of the bivalve mollusk species that have been documented or reported to occur in the freshwater systems of the state. Because bivalves can be very difficult to identify to genus and to species, and because there are a number of historical (often over 100 years ago) and poorly documented reports of many species, it is impossible to state the number of freshwater bivalve species that have been documented in the state. The scientific and common names used in this list are from Williams et al. (2017) for the taxa in the family Unionidae, and from NatureServe Explorer for the taxa in Corbiculidae and Sphaeriidae. The list also includes the State Rank, Global Rank, State Status, and U.S. Status (if it has such statuses) for each species. The ranks are those of the Biotics database of the N. C. Natural Heritage Program and NatureServe, October 2016. Ranks in parentheses are provided by the N.C. Biodiversity Project, based on data in Williams et al. (2017).
