THE PREDACEOUS WATER BEETLES (COLEOPTERA: DYTISCIDAE) OF ALBERTA: SYSTEMATICS, NATURAL HISTORY AND DISTRIBUTION DA VID J. LARSON Department of Biology University of Calgary Quaestiones Entomologicae Calgary, Alberta 11: 245 - 498 1975 One hundred and forty five species belonging to 17 genera of the family Dytiscidae are recorded from Alberta. Adults of each species are described and keys for identification are presented. Six species are described as new: Hydroporus criniticoxis, Hydroporus carri, Hydroporus hockingi, Hydroporus rubyi, Agabus margareti and Acilius athabascae. The species Hygrotus picatus (Kirby) is recognized as valid, and the name Dytiscus alaskanus J. Balfour- Browne is revalidated. The following new synonymy is proposed: Hydroporus coloradensis Fall = H. griseostriatus (DeGeer); Hydroporus hortense Hatch = H. laevis Kirby; Hydroporus productotruncatus Hatch = H. alaskanus Fall; Rhantus aequalis Hatch = R. binotatus (Harris); Dytiscus ooligbukii Kirby = D. circumcinctus Ahrens; and Dytiscus vexatus Sharp = D. dauricus Gebler. For each species, the following information is presented: synonymy, selected literature ref­ erences, description, taxonomic notes, natural history notes, and distribution, which includes a brief outline of the species range and a map showing Alberta collection localities. Illustrations of taxonomically important characters are presented. The post-glacial distribution of the Alberta species is discussed and related to post-glacial vegetational movements and climatic change. The sources of most elements of the Alberta dytiscid fauna cannot be determined definitely but it is shown that the fauna is of diverse origin. A Prairie, Boreal and Cordilleran fauna comprise the Alberta fauna. Each component is of complex origin and is defined on the basis of similarities in range ends of its constituent species rather than actual associations of species forming discrete faunal units. The areas of the province with richest faunas are those of a transitional nature. Les coleopteres dytiscides en Alberta comprennent cent-quarante-cinq espec?s distributes en 17 genres. In spite of statements in the literature such as Arnett's (1963) that "As a group, the species (of the family Dytiscidae) are well known", many taxonomic problems require study. The higher taxa in the family are well defined, but within the larger genera such as Hydroporus and Agabus, the arrangement of species in supraspecific categories is unsettled. Many genera and species groups require revision. Certain species are well known and well defined. However, many instances of inter- and intrapopulation variation, sexual di- or polymorphisms, and occurrence of groups of morphologically very similar species, have been observed. I point out such areas of taxonomic complexity. The Alberta distribution of each species is described as fully as possible. Certain areas of the province have been collected extensively. However, large and zoogeographically important areas such as much of the northern portion of the province, the parkland belt of east-central Alberta, and the northern Rocky Mountains in and adjacent to Jasper National Park, have been collected only superficially. Extensive collecting in these areas may lead to the discovery of new provincial records, and will at least modify certain of the distribution patterns outlined in this study. Attempts have been made to explain the post-glacial distribution of the present fauna by consideration of present-day distribution patterns. Natural history data consist of brief descriptions of the habitat in which adult specimens of each species are most frequently found. The time of year at which teneral adults are found is listed for each species, as this gives some idea of the seasonal timing of the life history. Im­ mature stages have not been considered in this study. Much work remains to be done in terms of relating larvae to adults, description of life histories, and detailed ecological studies of species. In addition to their inherent biological interest, studies of these insects could appraise their role as predators on economically important insects such as mosquitos, and as indicators of environmental conditions. THE STUDY AREA The limits of the study area are the political boundaries of Alberta. This large area includes Dy tiscidae of Alberta 247 a varied range of geological, climatic and vegetational zones. Physical and biotic features of the province are described in Hardy (1967) and R. D. Bird (1961), Moss (1947, 1953, 1955) and Rowe (1959) describe major vegetational features. Probably, no species of dytiscid beetle is restricted to Alberta. Most species occurring in Alberta range extensively in central, western or northern Canada. By including all species known from neighbouring Canadian areas in at least the keys, it is hoped that this work will be useful for identification of dytiscids of southeastern British Columbia, the Prairie Provinces and the southern reaches of the Northwest Territories. A BRIEF HISTORY OF SYSTEMATIC STUDY OF NORTH AMERICAN DYTISCIDAE The early history of taxonomic work on the North American dytiscid fauna closely parallels that on the North American carabid fauna as outlined by Lindroth (1969). Many temperate and arctic species of Dytiscidae are Holarctic and hence a number were described by early European workers. North American populations of many of these Holarctic species were de­ scribed as separate species and even to this date, the relationships between certain morpholog­ ically similar forms in the Palaearctic and Nearctic regions have not been determined. W. Kirby (1837) and C. Aube (1838) were the first Europeans to describe large numbers of North American species. Kirby's types of North American Dytiscidae, housed in the British Museum of Natural History, London, were examined in the course of this study. Most of Aube's types, located in the Royal Museum of Natural Sciences, Brussels, Belgium, were not revised by North American workers. T. Say, in papers between 1823 and 1834, was the first North American to describe many water beetles. Say's types are considered to be lost, but recent authors have generally accepted interpretations as indicated by specimens in the LeConte collection in the Museum of Comparative Zoology, Harvard University. T. W. Harris (1828, 1829) described several species of Dytiscidae from the eastern United States. Harris' types are also located in the Museum of Comparative Zoology. During the mid 1800's, J. L. LeConte, in a series of papers (1845 - 1878), described a very large number of dytiscid beetle species,presented catalogue listings, and revised several of the larger genera. G. R. Crotch (1873) revised the North American members of the family and described a number of new species, but the descriptions are generally too brief to allow reliable

Each species assessed in this report received a rank among the following categories: Extinct (0.2), Extirpated (0.1), At Risk (1), May Be At Risk (2), Sensitive (3), Secure (4), Undetermined (5), Not Assessed (6), Exotic (7) or Accidental (8). In the 2010 report, 11 950 species were assessed. Many taxonomic groups that were first assessed in the previous Wild Species reports were reassessed, such as vascular plants, freshwater mussels, odonates, butterflies, crayfishes, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals. Other taxonomic groups are assessed for the first time in the Wild Species 2010 report, namely lichens, mosses, spiders, predaceous diving beetles, ground beetles (including the reassessment of tiger beetles), lady beetles, bumblebees, black flies, horse flies, mosquitoes, and some selected macromoths. The overall results of this report show that the majority of Canada’s wild species are ranked Secure.

The Dytisci- dae had the most species (53), followed by Hydrophilidae (20), Gyrinidae (14), Haliplidae (8), Chrysomelidae (7), Elmidae (3) and Curculionidae (5). The families Helodidae and Heteroceridae were each represented by a single spe- cies. Seventy seven percent of species were considered rare or uncommon (1 - 10 records), twenty percent common (11 - 100 records) and only three percent abundant (more than 100 records).

The pattern of distribution with several genera confined to different continents of the Southern Hemisphere raises the yet untested hypothesis of a Gondwana vicariance origin. The monophyly of Aciliini has been questioned with regard to Eretini, and there are competing hypotheses about the intergeneric relationship in the tribe. This study is the first comprehensive phylogenetic analysis focused on the tribe Aciliini and it is based on eight gene fragments. The aims of the present study are: 1) to test the monophyly of Aciliini and clarify the position of the tribe Eretini and to resolve the relationship among genera within Aciliini, 2) to calibrate the divergence times within Aciliini and test different biogeographical scenarios, and 3) to evaluate the utility of the gene CAD for phylogenetic analysis in Dytiscidae. Results: Our analyses confirm monophyly of Aciliini with Eretini as its sister group. Each of six genera which have multiple species are also supported as monophyletic. The origin of the tribe is firmly based in the Southern Hemisphere with the arrangement of Neotropical and Afrotropical taxa as the most basal clades suggesting a Gondwana vicariance origin. However, the uncertainty as to whether a fossil can be used as a stem-or crowngroup calibration point for Acilius influenced the result: as crowngroup calibration, the 95% HPD interval for the basal nodes included the geological age estimate for the Gondwana break-up, but as a stem group calibration the basal nodes were too young.

LARSON Department of Biology, Memorial University of Newfoundland St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada A1B 3X9 Abstract. One hundred and thirteen species of Dytiscidae (Coleoptera) are recorded from the Yukon Territory. The Yukon distribution, total geographical range and habitat of each of these species is described and multi-species patterns are summarized in tabular form. Several different range patterns are recognized with most species being Holarctic or transcontinental Nearctic boreal (73%) in lentic habitats. Other major range patterns are Arctic (20 species) and Cordilleran (12 species), while a few species are considered to have Grassland (7), Deciduous forest (2) or Southern (5) distributions. Sixteen species have a Beringian and glaciated western Nearctic distribution, i.e. the only Nearctic Wisconsinan refugial area encompassed by their present range is the Alaskan/Central Yukon refugium; 5 of these species are closely confined to this area while 11 have wide ranges that extend in the arctic and/or boreal zones east to Hudson Bay. Therefore they may be expected to provide valuable information regarding these bodies. How- ever, the identification of particular classes of meteorites with particular small bodies or classes of small bodies is at present uncertain. It is very unlikely that any significant quantity of meteoritic material is obtained from typical ac- tive comets. Relatively we1 1-studied dynamical mechanisms exist for transferring material into the vicinity of the Earth from the inner edge of the asteroid belt on an 210~-~year time scale. It seems likely that most iron meteorites are obtained in this way, and a significant yield of complementary differec- tiated meteoritic silicate material may be expected to accom- pany these differentiated iron meteorites. Insofar as data exist, photometric measurements support an association between Apollo objects and chondri tic meteorites. Because Apol lo ob- jects are in orbits which come close to the Earth, and also must be fragmented as they traverse the asteroid belt near aphel ion, there also must be a component of the meteorite flux derived from Apollo objects. Dynamical arguments favor the hypothesis that most Apollo objects are devolatilized comet resiaues. However, plausible dynamical , petrographic, and cosmogonical reasons are known which argue against the simple conclusion of this syllogism, uiz., that chondri tes are of cometary origin. Suggestions are given for future theoretical , observational, experimental investigations directed toward improving our understanding of this puzzling situation.

    Sèrie Territori i Parcs Naturals 7 IV Trobada d’Estudiosos de la Serralada Litoral Central i VIII del Montnegre i el Corredor Col·lecció Eines Sèrie Territori i Parcs Naturals El 20 i 21 de novembre de 2019 va tenir lloc a Vallgorguina la IV Trobada d’Estudiosos de la Serralada Litoral Central i VIII del Montnegre i el Corredor, amb l’objectiu de donar a conèixer els estudis i recerques duts a terme els últims quatre anys en diferents àmbits de les ciències socials i naturals del territori. En total es van presentar 47 comunicacions que van abordar temes rellevants i innovadors, però també estudis de base o projectes de gestió aplicada per a la conservació d’espècies o per al control d’espècies exòtiques, entre d’altres. Aquests treballs, que amb aquesta publicació tenim l’oportunitat de llegir amb detall, suposen una contribució inestimable per millorar el coneixement de la realitat d’aquests tres parcs, dels seus valors naturals, paisatgístics i culturals, i són de gran utilitat per al personal encarregat de gestionar-los i per a qualsevol persona interessada en la seva conservació. Hydrated minerals have been found mainly on Mars surface, on main belt primitive asteroids and possibly also on few TNOs. These materials have been produced by hydration of pristine anhydrous silicates during the aqueous alteration process, that, to be active, needed the presence of liquid water under low temperature conditions (below 320 K) to chemically alter the minerals.
