The kiwifruit industry in New Zealand The kiwifruit industry is a major contributor to regional New Zealand returning $1.8b directly to rural communities in 2018/19. There are ~3000 growers,14,000ha of orchards, 10,000 permanent employees and up to 25,000 jobs during the peak season. Approximately 80% of New Zealand’s kiwifruit crop is grown in the Bay of Plenty and the industry is expected to grow its global sales to $4.5b by 2025 which is an increase from $3.1b in 2018/19. The projected growth of the industry will contribute significantly to the Bay of Plenty GDP increasing it by 135% to $2.04 billion by 2029/2030. 2. General comments Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the Annual Plan. There are ~2,600 orchards in the Bay of Plenty with an average size of 4.46ha. 60 of these orchards are within the Tauranga City limits. The industry makes the following comments on the Annual Plan. 3. Rate Increase The summary document1 states that It’s crucial for our city to be able to accommodate the people who continue to move here. -

PURPOSE The purpose of this Infrastructure Strategy to identify issues that will face Council’s infrastructure over the next 30 years, and to identify the options available for addressing the issues. 2. INTRODUCTION Infrastructure is essential to connect people and place. In Aotearoa, the provision of services and facilities that meet the current and future needs of communities falls under the responsibilities of district councils. Effective infrastructure planning is critical to ensure economic prosperity and to enable populations to access fundamental services and facilities of everyday living. However, building and maintaining infrastructure is expensive and requires careful and considered management to ensure the current and future needs of communities are provided for. Strategic and integrated planning is required to review, anticipate and adapt to changing scenarios There are six themes that will influence the decisions we make about maintaining and managing our infrastructure over the next 30 years. These themes are: • Population and demographic change • Protecting the health of our communities • Protecting the health of our environment • Maintaining and renewing our infrastructure • The resilience of our infrastructure • Providing for the Māori world view By understanding these themes mentioned above, the strategy will identify the issues facing our infrastructure and then discuss the options available for responding -

Project Update 2: Taupō Sports Fishery Review
Exploring Future Opportunities for the Taupō Fishery Project Update #2 The Taupō Sports Fishery Review is now progressing through the final stages of the public consultation and engagement stage. To date the Project Team has met with the following groups: • Lake Rotoaira Forest Trust • Taupō District Council • Key Department staff, including Fisheries Staff • Fish and Game • Business, marketing and events representatives • Local fishing guides (Turangi and Taupō, Boat and River ) Members of the working team have also talked to a wide number of individuals (fishing guides, business owners, fishers etc) who have contacted us and provided some useful insights and information based on their knowledge and experience in the Taupō Fishery and wider. Survey The online survey has also closed with 742 responses received, a summary report is attached. The responses are currently being assessed by APR Experts (who are preparing the economic assessment of the fishery) and Michael in National Office (to look at social responses, comments and trends). The team is very pleased with this response and is far in excess of what was anticipated. Economic Assessment The 1983 economic assessment of the Taupō Fishery is currently being revised by APR Consultants, who undertook the initial report. This assessment will provide the value of the fishery to the Taupō District as well as a wider range of information on use and associated spending and user trends. Public Workshops Two public workshops have been scheduled next week in Turangi and Taupō. The intent of the workshops is to provide participants with a brief update on the progress of the project and test some of the findings of the survey and wider consultation to date. -

SUMMARY Ngamatea Swamp, Waiouru, has been severely modified by fire, grazing, drain excavation and other factors. A survey of the wetland's vegetation and wildlife in September 1988 showed that parts of the area still have important natural features which it would be possible to retain, or even enhance, with appropriate management. An environmental impact assessment made in 1978, before drains were excavated, did not identify the significant vegetation types and plant species which are still present.
