Diana Davies Photograph Collection Finding Aid Collection summary Prepared by Stephanie Smith, Joyce Capper, Jillian Foley, and Meaghan McCarthy 2004-2005. Creator: Diana Davies Title: The Diana Davies Photograph Collection Extent: 8 binders containing contact sheets, slides, and prints; 7 boxes (8.5”x10.75”x2.5”) of 35 mm negatives; 2 binders of 35 mm and 120 format negatives; and 1 box of 11 oversize prints. Abstract: Original photographs, negatives, and color slides taken by Diana Davies. Date span: 1963-present. Bulk dates: Newport Folk Festival, 1963-1969, 1987, 1992; Philadelphia Folk Festival, 1967-1968, 1987. Provenance The Smithsonian Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections acquired portions of the Diana Davies Photograph Collection in the late 1960s and early 1970s, when Ms. Davies photographed for the Festival of American Folklife. More materials came to the Archives circa 1989 or 1990. Archivist Stephanie Smith visited her in 1998 and 2004, and brought back additional materials which Ms. Davies wanted to donate to the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives. In a letter dated 12 March 2002, Ms. Davies gave full discretion to the Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage to grant permission for both internal and external use of her photographs, with the proviso that her work be credited “photo by Diana Davies.” Restrictions Permission for the duplication or publication of items in the Diana Davies Photograph Collection must be obtained from the Ralph Rinzler Folklife Archives and Collections. Consult the archivists for further information. Scope and Content Note The Davies photographs already held by the Rinzler Archives have been supplemented by two more recent donations (1998 and 2004) of additional photographs (contact sheets, prints, and slides) of the Newport Folk Festival, the Philadelphia Folk Festival, the Poor People's March on Washington, the Civil Rights Movement, the Georgia Sea Islands, and miscellaneous personalities of the American folk revival. -

An Interview with Fred Hellerman Part II May 26, 2016 In this interview Fred is joined by his wife, Susan Lardner. Ken Edgar: We are now back in Fred Hellerman's living room and we're continuing our conversation with Fred. We are joined today by Susan Lardner, Fred’s wife, who herself has a very interesting background and career. Together they are going to help us remember their lives in Weston, starting in around 1970. Susan, welcome to the show. When we last left our story we had talked about your arrival in Weston and how Harold Leventhal, the Weaver's manager, had purchased a home near Cobb's Mill and was influential in bringing you up here. As a result, you became interested in Weston and eventually bought the house in which we are sitting today. Susan: I checked with one of Harold's daughters and found out that he had bought his house in 1968 and Fred bought this house in 1969. Although Fred had been up here before visiting other people, he had not been in the house purchasing business. Fred Hellerman: Yeah, coming up there for a weekend. I just fell in love with that immediately. It was a very important place for me. Ken: In the summer of 1970, you two were married right here on this property. Fred: From here, yeah, at this house. Now the story is here from the 1920s to the 1970s and beyond in four exclusive 3-CD sets. Through this music, we feel it all from the isolation of early twen- tieth century Appalachia through the economic and political upheavals of the Depression, War, and Civil Rights eras to contem- porary west coast singer-songwriters looking within for inspiration. The story is here: original artists and original versions in stunning sound with detailed notes from folk scholar Dave Samuelson. The first set covers the period from the 1920s through to 1957. All the names you'd expect are here: the Carter Family, Woody Guthrie, Pete Seeger, the Weavers, Lead Belly, Cisco Houston, and many, many more. Here are the original versions of songs that have become classics and rallying cries: Wildwood Flower, Midnight Special, Rock Island Line, Wayfaring Stranger, So Long It's Been Good To Know You, This Land Is Your Land, 16 Tons, 900 Miles, Delia, and many, many more. The second set begins with the folk revival that started in the wake of the Kingston Trio's Tom Dooley and continues through the dawn of the singer-songwriter era. She has won two honorable mentions in the international John Lennon Songwriting contest, and has been awarded two Puffin Foundation grants for her work with and for children. The songs she writes are from a young child's perspective, and along with that comes the desire to move and interact. As you can tell by those who have written in support of the band, she is also an educator who has an amazing ability to engage a large group of children while maintaining order. The band is comprised of 5 other talented musicians: Danny Conkle, Joe Ellison, Kemp Jones, Melinda Kershner and Michael Wegner, who turn each song into a musical playground. They have produced 2 albums of music, and bring with them the ability to play in any style: jazz, bluegrass, rock, funk, reggae, blues . They also bring the sounds of over 13 instruments to young ears: drums, conga, percussion, keyboard, bass, acoustic and electric guitars, banjo, mandolin, harmonica, saxophone, flute and clarinet. To top it off, they add 3-part harmony. Last year, they produced an original play which featured their music, 70 local school children, and was performed for 3 sold-out school shows at the Oconee County Civic Center. -

Thomas Goldsmith, ed. The Bluegrass Reader. Urbana: University of Illinois Press, 2004. Jonathan T. King In a world of increasingly uncertain American identity, it is hardly surpris ing that an interest in bluegrass music, so tied to notions of white America, should be enjoying a revival. Editor Thomas Goldsmith's The Bluegrass Reader is the latest addition to a small canon of historical literature that is beginning to coalesce in this environment. Rather than aim for historical definitiveness, as was the case with Tom Ewing's Bill Monroe Reader (2000), Goldsmith widens his scope to include many forms of documentation in cluding promotional materials, record and CD liner notes, interviews, aca demic articles, newspaper and magazine articles, program notes, speech tran scripts-even a record review parody. The result is a subjective, impression istic collage of material that breaks little new theoretical ground, but as sembles a great deal of essential historical information, representing many facets of the bluegrass universe. For this effort, Goldsmith was recently awarded the International Bluegrass Music Association's 2004 award for Print Media Personality of the Year. The Bluegrass Reader is divided into three large sections: "The Big Bang: 1939-59;' "The Reseeding of Bluegrass: 1960-79;' and "Another Roots Re vival: 1980-2000." As is belied by these subheadings, the editor conceives of bluegrass history as two large revivals of an initial creative impulse. I will describe the contents of each of these parts below, in a necessarily awkward list, and then return to treat the book as a whole. Part 1, "The Big Bang," chronicles that initial creative impulse on which the rest of bluegrass his tory supposedly depends. -
