Hunt 10 April 2007 The Quiet Revolutionary: Yosihiko Sinoto and the Hawaiian Fishhook Typology Yosihiko Sinoto is not an international anthropology superstar. He is not famous - - or, at least his name is not instantly recognisable. Even his mentor Kenneth Emory is more illustrious. It is difficult to find his work in public and popular forums, such as the internet, unless you know exactly what you are looking for. However, with Yosi Sinoto first impressions -- even the lack of them -- are deceiving. Sinoto is, arguably, one of the most important archaeologists working in Oceania. Many modern accepted wisdoms of the ancient long distance-voyaging are based on the work Sinoto did throughout the Pacific. Sinoto’s definitive work throughout the Hawaiian Islands and French Polynesia established not only a chronology of settlement for Hawaii, but for migration in the Pacific as well. In Hawaii, however, Sinoto is most famous for his work with fishhooks. Sinoto believed that fishhooks could be used as a marking point on a cultural sequence -- specifically, using fishhook types to create a relative chronology. With fellow archaeologists Kenneth Emory and William J. Bonk, Sinoto was able to use fishhooks to create a settlement timeline for Eastern Polynesia as well as prove origins and inter-island interactions of the ancient people of Oceania. Even though some of Sinoto’s methods and 1 theories may have fallen out of favour, Yosi Sinoto’s work with Hawaiian fishhooks remains influential to this day. Born in Japan in 1925, Yoshiko Sinoto, the son of a scientist, became entranced by archaeology at a young age. -

Ethnography and Democracy: Hymes's Political Theory of Language
Ethnography and democracy: Hymes’s political theory of language JAN BLOMMAERT Abstract Dell Hymes’s oeuvre was explicitly political, and this paper addresses this often overlooked dimension of his work. The project of ethnography was intended by Hymes to be a counterhegemonic and democratic science, which o¤ered voice to the subjects it studied and so created a critical social-scientific paradigm that destabilized and negated established truths by dialogically engaging with reality. This critical and counterhegemonic paradigmatic dimension of ethnography is first sketched and discussed at some length. Next, we discuss Hymes’s ethnopoetic work. In his ethnopoetic work, Hymes’s critical concern with voice, democracy, and inequality is articulated most clearly and persuasively. It is by looking at ethnopoetics that we see the blending of a methodological and a political project. Keywords: Hymes; ethnography; ethnopoetics; critique; democracy. 1. Introduction Dell Hymes’s work is, like that of Bourdieu and Bernstein, but also that of Gumperz and Go¤man, highly political. Texts such as the essay ‘‘Speech and language’’ (Hymes 1996: ch. 3), or the introductory essay to his Reinventing Anthropology (2002 [1969]) explicitly testify to that; most of his oeuvre, however, can be read as a political statement, an at- tempt toward a critical science of language in social life, toward ‘‘a union of knowledge and social values’’ (2002 [1969]: 51). Hymes would often mention his own background as an explanation for this, especially his ex- periences as a GI enlisted so as to gain access to college education under the GI Bill, and stationed in the Far East. -

Franz Boas’s Legacy of “Useful Knowledge”: The APS Archives and the Future of Americanist Anthropology1 REGNA DARNELL Distinguished University Professor of Anthropology University of Western Ontario t is a pleasure and privilege, though also somewhat intimidating, to address the assembled membership of the American Philosophical ISociety. Like the august founders under whose portraits we assemble, Members come to hear their peers share the results of their inquiries across the full range of the sciences and arenas of public affairs to which they have contributed “useful knowledge.” Prior to the profes- sionalization of science in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the boundaries between disciplines were far less significant than they are today. Those who were not experts in particular topics could rest assured that their peers were capable of assessing both the state of knowledge in each other’s fields and the implications for society. Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington were all polymaths, covering what we now separate into several kinds of science, humanities, and social science in ways that crosscut one another and illustrate the permeability of disciplinary boundaries. The study of the American Indian is a piece of that multidisciplinary heri- tage that constituted the APS and continues to characterize its public persona. The Founding Members of the Society all had direct and seminal experience with the Indians and with the conflict between their traditional ways of life and the infringing world of settler colonialism. On the one hand, they felt justified in exploiting Native resources, as surveyors, treaty negotiators, and land speculators. On the other hand, the Indians represented the uniqueness of the Americas, of the New World that defined itself apart from the decadence of old Europe. -

78 UNIVERSITY ANTHROPOLOGY: EARLY1DEPARTMENTS IN THE UNITED STATES John F. Freeman Paper read before the Kroeber Anthropological Society April 25, 1964, Berkeley, California I. The Conventional View Unlike other social sciences, anthropology prides itself on its youth, seeking its paternity in Morgan, Tylor, Broca, and Ratzel, its childhood in the museum and its maturity in the university. While the decades after 1850 do indeed suggest that a hasty marriage took place between Ethnology, or the study of the races of mankind conceived as divinely created, and Anthropology, or the study of man as part of the zoological world; the marriage only symbol- ized the joining of a few of the tendencies in anthropology and took place much too late to give the child an honest name. When George Grant MacCurdy claimed in 1899 that "Anthropology has matured late," he was in fact only echoing the sentiments of the founders of the Anthropological Societies of Paris (Paul Broca) and London (James Hunt), who in fostering the very name, anthropology, were urging that a science of man depended upon prior develop- ments of other sciences. MacCurdy stated it In evolutionary terms as "man is last and highest in the geological succession, so the science of man is the last and highest branch of human knowledge'" (MacCurdy 1899:917). Several disciples of Franz Boas have further shortened the history of American anthropology, arguing that about 1900 anthropology underwent a major conversion. Before that date, Frederica de Laguna tells us, "anthropologists [were] serious-minded amateurs or professionals in other disciplines who de- lighted in communicating-across the boundaries of the several natural sci- ences and the humanities, [because] museums, not universities, were the cen- ters of anthropological activities, sponsoring field work, research and publication, and making the major contributions to the education of profes- sional anthropologists, as well as serving the general public" (de Laguna 1960:91, 101). -

THE JOURNAL OF THE POLYNESIAN SOCIETY VOLUME 127 No.3 SEPTEMBER 2018 VOICES ON THE WIND, TRACES IN THE EARTH: INTEGRATING ORAL NARRATIVE AND ARCHAEOLOGY IN POLYNESIAN HISTORY PATRICK VINTON KIRCH 2018 Nayacakalou Medal Recipient University of California, Berkeley The Polynesian peoples have long been noted for their propensity to encode the rich traditions of their ancestors in oral narrative accounts, often memorised by priests or other specialists, and passed down orally from generation to generation. Anthropologists refer to these as oral traditions, oral history or oral narratives, although they are also often categorised as “legend” or “myth”, terms that tend to dismiss their value as witnesses of real human affairs—that is to say, of history. In this lecture, I focus on a particular form of Polynesian oral narrative or oral history—one that is fundamentally chronological in its structure in that it is explicitly tied to a genealogical framework. Now I confess that I am not a specialist in oral tradition, a subject that is sometimes subsumed under the discipline of “folklore”. I am by training and by practice, over nearly half a century now, an archaeologist first and foremost. But I am also an anthropologist who believes in the holistic vision of that discipline as conceived by such disciplinary ancestors as Alfred Kroeber and Edward Sapir at the beginning of the 20th century. While this may make me something of a living fossil in the eyes of younger scholars who hew to narrower subdisciplinary paths, my holistic training and predilections incline me to see the value in working across and between the different branches of anthropology. -

New Orleans, USA Abstract: Charles Wagley contributed significantly to the ethnographic study of culture and society in Brazil. In addition to his well- known work on both rural and urban Brazilian populations, Wagley was a pioneering ethnographer of indigenous societies in Brazil, especially the Tapirapé and Tenetehara, associated with the Tupí-Guaraní language family. In comparing these two societies specifically, Wagley was most interested in their kinship systems, especially the types of kinship or relationship terminology that these exhibited. In both cases, he found that what had once been probably classificatory, bifurcate-merging terminologies seem to have developed into more or less bifurcate-collateral (or Sudanese-like) terminologies, perhaps partly as a result of contact and depopulation. Recent research on kinship nomenclature and salience of relationship terms among the Ka’apor people, also speakers of a Tupí-Guaraní language, corroborates Wagley’s original insights and indicates their relevance to contemporary ethnography.
