It's the earliest item that I have of anything resembling HTAFC memorabilia - a sadly incomplete newspaper report of Town's 6-1 West Riding Cup 2nd Round tie against Clayton West on 20th March, 1909 at a time when Town was only a Midland League team. Of interest here is the mention in the third paragraph of 'The Redskins' which MUST be Town because Howard - who kicks clear - is a Town player; so does this prove that Town played in red at this time? All Town fans know that we were at one time known as 'The Scarlet Runners' due to playing in red shirts - later to become pink as the colour ran after all too-frequent washes! - and this would appear to be the evidence that was required. This brilliant piece of history is glued to the back of the telegram that I have announcing Town's acceptance into the Football League soon after in 1910.

An objective assessment of achievement set against resources Arsenal in the Wenger era: presentation for AST By Nick Harris of Sportingintelligence 1 BACKGROUND - By Nick Harris This paper was commissioned by the Arsenal Supporters’ Trust but beyond setting a remit of examining Arsene Wenger’s reign from an economic point of view, the AST had no input, no editorial veto - and no influence on the conclusions. It was when I was living in Japan in the mid 1990s that I first became acquainted with the work of Arsene Wenger, who was hired by Nagoya Grampus Eight in early 1995 after being sacked by Monaco at the end of 1994. Wenger quickly acquired a reputation as a cerebral coach and was described locally as Wenger- sensei - ‘sensei’ being the Japanese word for teacher but also more widely a term of respect for any educator in the widest sense. I wasn’t familiar with his work at Monaco in detail and when he was hired at Arsenal in 1996, I was sent by The Independent, for whom I was then doing some freelance sports work, alongside my Japanese newspaper day job, to be among the many asking: Arsene Who? I should point out at this stage that I am not an Arsenal fan; I am a lifelong supporter of Arsenal’s feeder club, also known as Southampton.

    Soccer History Issue 18 THE FRENCH MENACE; THE MIGRATION OF BRITISH PLAYERS TO FRANCE IN THE 1930S In the spring of 1932 the pages of the national and sporting press in England informed readers that domestic football was under threat from the ‘French Menace’. This comprised a well-publicised, but rather futile, attempt to attract two of Chelsea’s star players, Tommy Law and Hugh Gallacher, to play in the newly formed French professional league, effectively tearing up their English contracts in return for a reportedly large sum of money. The French Menace followed the ‘American Menace’ and the ‘Irish Menace’, occasions when British players had been induced to break their contracts and migrate to play in the American Soccer and Irish Free State Leagues. The potential migration of players was a menace because in each case, initially at least, there was a threat to the fundamental structures that enabled clubs to control their players: the retain-and-transfer system and (in England) the maximum wage. The British associations were passing through an isolationist phase and had left FIFA, hence agreements on player transfers only held on transactions between the Home Countries. A player moving to a club in another association could do so, in theory, without hindrance and without the payment of a transfer fee. In practice, as each ‘menace’ arose the FA was forced to reach agreements with local bodies to ensure that players could be held to their contract. Football in France was nominally amateur prior to 1932, but this concealed the advent of a form of professionalism that had gathered pace in the years after the First World War.
