Domestic Violence Revealed through Elizabeth’s Conflicts in Nicholas Sparks’ The Lucky One. Yogyakarta: Department of English Letters, Faculty of Letters, Sanata Dharma University. This study discusses Nicholas Sparks’ novel The Lucky One. This novel shows the relationship between Elizabeth and her ex-husband, Keith Clayton where the ex-husband always interrupts Elizabeth’s romantic life. The writer chooses to analyze the domestic violence revealed through the conflicts that occur between Elizabet and Keith. There are two problems analyzed in this study: (1) What are the conflicts experienced by Elizabeth? (2) How do the conflicts reveal the issue of domestic violence? This study uses Roberts and Jacobs, Koesnosoebroto, McCue, de Beavoir and Bressler’s theories. In this study the writer applies the library research method and uses the feminism approach. The approach is choosen because this study examines woman’s status in the society. Based on the analysis, there are two main points which can be drawn from this study. The first point is the conflicts experienced by Elizabeth are mostly the external conflicts and the other conflicts are the internal conflicts. The external conflicts happen between Elizabeth and Keith, the conflicts are about the custody of their son and also about Keith who always interrupting Elizabeth’s romance with other man. The internal conflicts happen between Elizabeth and herself. In the conflicts she faces two choices which have the importance with their own consequences. She have to choose between following her thought of keeping Ben on the weekend or following Keith’s custody eventhough her son does not like to spend the weekend with his father. The second conclusion is the conflicts experienced by Elizabeth are categorized into domestic violence because of the relationship between the two people and in the conflicts she was being victimized physically, emotionally, psychologically, and sexually by Keith’s behavior. In conclusion the conflicts of Elizabeth are related to Keith and those conflicts have influenced Elizabeth’s life because she is victimized with Keith’s behavior and it is categorized as domestic violence. Furthermore from the violence experienced, Elizabeth’s position as a woman is considered under the male domination. xi PLAGIATPLAGIAT MERUPAKAN MERUPAKAN TINDAKAN TINDAKAN TIDAK TIDAK TERPUJI TERPUJI ABSTRAK SIMON (2013). • CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Film Is A
1 CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION A. Background of the Study Film is a visual form of dominant mass communication because they are able to reach many social segments, as well as having the potential to affect the audience. This is because the contents of the message brought by the film can influence and shape society based on a story that is brought behind the film and not vice-versa. Being the content of the film is a record of reality that grows and develops in the community and then project it to go back in the direction the big screen. The film as a representation of reality society where, the film is a portrait of the reality of a society in which the film was made and brought back in shaping reality of a society based on the codes, conventions, and the ideology of culture wide. ( Irawanto, 1999: 14). Nowadays, there are so many books adapted to movie, but certainly they have changed. The film director intentionally changed the movie because he or she had different point of view. Film is a more sensory experience than reading, beside verbal language, there is also color, movement, and sound. Yet film is also limited: for one thing, there are no time constraints on a novel, while a film must generally compress events into two hours or so. For another, the meaning of a novel is controlled by only one person (the author) while the meaning we get from a film is the result of a collaborative effort by a large number of people.

As a matter of fact, I was so busy enjoying the ILA conference that I almost missed my opportunity to speak at the business meeting! March 12, 2009 saw me heading off to Kodiak, Alaska for the Alaska Library Association's Annual Conference. Flying out of Pocatello these days means that you must fly first to Salt Lake City, Utah, a lovely city and a fine airport, but is a route that does not make for a direct flight to anywhere.

His father, Patrick Michael (Mike), was a graduate student for much of Nicholas’ early life, so the family lived in a num- ber of college towns before settling in Fair Oaks, California, when Nicholas was eight. Nicholas’ mother, Jill EmmaMarie (Jill), worked as both a homemaker and optometrist’s assistant. All three Sparks chil- dren, including Nicholas’ older brother, Micah, and younger sister, Danielle, were born within a three-year period, and the closeness in age created a strong bond between them. Education and Work Experience Nicholas excelled in high school, graduating valedictorian of his class and earning notice as a middle-distance runner. He accepted a full ath- letic scholarship to the University of Notre Dame and set a school record as part of a relay team, but he found himself hampered by an Achilles tendon injury the summer after his freshman year.

  • Nicholas Sparks
THE NOTEBOOK Nicholas Sparks CHAPTER ONE - MIRACLES WHO AM I? And how, I wonder, will this story end? The sun has come up and I am sitting by a window that is foggy with the breath of a life gone by. I’m a sight this morning: two shirts, heavy pants, a scarf wrapped twice around my neck and tucked into a thick sweater knitted by my daughter thirty birthdays ago. The thermostat in my room is set as high as it will go, and a smaller space heater sits directly behind me. II clicks and groans and spews hot air like a fairy-tale dragon, and still my body shivers with a cold that will never go away, a cold that has been eighty years in the making. Eighty years. I wonder if this is how it is for everyone my age. My life? It isn’t easy to explain. It has not been the rip-roaring spectacular I fancied it would be, but neither have I burrowed around with the gophers. I suppose it has most resembled a blue-chip stock: fairly stable, more ups than downs, and gradually trending upwards over time. I’ve learned that not everyone can say this about his life. But do not be misled. I am nothing special, of this I am sure. I am a common man with common thoughts, and I’ve led a common life. There are no monuments dedicated to me and my name will soon be forgotten, but I’ve loved another with all my heart and soul, and to me this has always been enough.

DEAR JOHN Nicholas Sparks For Micah and Christine Acknowledgments This novel was both a joy and a challenge to write; a joy because it’s my hope that the characters reflect the honor and integrity of those who serve in the military, and a challenge because . well, to be completely honest, I find that every novel I write is challenging. There are those people, however, who make the challenge that much easier, and without further ado, I’d like to thank them. To Cat, my wife and the woman I love with all my heart. Thanks for your patience, babe. To Miles, Ryan, Landon, Lexie, and Savannah, my children. Thanks for your endless enthusiasm, kids. To Theresa Park, my agent. Thanks for everything. To Jamie Raab, my editor. Thanks for your kindness and wisdom.
