This cover features a specially commissioned painting by renowned artist John Wigston. The first issue of 2019, and the next in our Maritime Series. This lovely cover commemorates the Iolaire, whose sinking on 1 January 1919 in the Minch was one of the worst maritime disasters in United Kingdom waters during the 20th century. Carrying sailors who had fought in the First World War back to the Scottish island of Lewis, Iolaire left the port of Kyle of Lochalsh on the mainland late on the evening of 31 December 1918. At 2:30 a.m. on New Year’s Day, approaching the port of Stornoway, and only a mile away from the safety of Stornoway Harbour, she hit the infamous rocks “The Beasts of Holm” and sank. Over 200 men perished. commissioning of hms havock 16th January 2019 Marking the 125th Anniversary of the Commissioning of HMS Havock. Havock was a Havock-class torpedo boat destroyer of the British Royal Navy built by the Yarrow shipyard. She was one of the very first destroyers ordered by the Royal Navy, and the first to be delivered. After WWII the Atlas Supply Company purchased a Douglas C-54 airliner which they converted into a ‘flying showroom’ for Atlas products. The plane was branded as the Atlas Sky Merchant and to generate publicity for their showroom in the sky they organised an around the world flight. The company worked with the American Air Mail Society to organise 4,500 air sheets to be carried on the flight.

The flight left New Jersey on January 5th 1948 and was piloted by Captain Ivan Smirnoff, a decorated WWI Russian fighter ace. The flight visited 29 cities, all of which postmarked each of the air sheets.

This postcard was flown aboard the iconic world ARZ21A £150 flight of famous German airship ‘Graf Zeppelin’ on the Friedrichshafen, Germany - Tokyo, Japan leg. It £25 per month features the special ‘Graf Zeppelin Weltrundfahrt’ for 6 months cachet and clear German and Japanese cancels.

The flight was made possible by American newspaper publisher William Hearst who paid $200,000 for exclusive media rights, equivalent to $2.5 million today, and through the sale of carried souvenir mail.
