Lecture to be followed by a reception featuring Cypriot specialties. Joan Breton Connelly is a classical archaeologist and Professor of Classics and Art History at New York University. She is Director of the Yeronisos Island Excavations in Cyprus. A recipient of numerous awards and fellowships, including a MacArthur Fellowship in 1996, Connelly was awarded the Archaeological Institute of America’s Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award in 2007 and the James R. Wiseman Book Award for Portrait of a Priestess in 2009. Connelly’s scholarship focuses on Greek art, myth, and religion, and includes a ground-breaking reinterpretation of the Parthenon Frieze.

Connelly has held distinguished lectureships throughout the United States and abroad. She has appeared in the History Channel’s “Star Wars: Ae Legacy Revealed” and “Indiana Jones: Ae Ultimate Quest.”

A graduate of in Classics, Connelly received her doctorate from . She has held visiting fellowships at Oxford University, the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, and the Field Museum of Natural History. Connelly is a fellow of the Society of Antiquaries of London, the Royal Geographical Society, the Explorers Club, and the Society of Women Geographers. President George W. Bush appointed Connelly to the Cultural Property Advisory Committee, U.S. Department of State. She is spending 2010-11 as a Member of the School of Historical Studies at Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton. C T O  A I of A
