    e Dunedin Sound – Your photos wanted! Like the memories they capture, they may be blurry, fuzzy and have faded a little with time – but Department of Music senior lecturer Ian Chapman still wants to use your pictures in his latest book. Dr Chapman is writing a book on the music produced by bands such as The Verlaines, The Chills and The Bats from the 1970s to the early 1990s which is now described as the ‘Dunedin Sound’. Dr Chapman hopes to include images taken by former Otago students during the Dunedin Sound’s hey-day, or by those who were at some of the seminal performances. Whether the photos are big, small, black and white, colour, sharp, blurry, digital, or prints – and especially if they are previously unpublished – images will be considered for publication in the book, he says. In return, those who submit images included in the publication will receive a copy of the book. All original photos will be returned to their owners. As well as exploring the bands and the contribution they made to New Zealand music, Dr Chapman says the book will discuss definitions of the Dunedin Sound – the term, for example, is often equated with Flying Nun records, but he points out that not all bands signed to the New Zealand label were based in Dunedin. Dr Chapman has written extensively on the music and career of pop-icon David Bowie and previously performed as “alter-ego” Dr Glam until he retired the character in 2014. He has also written on New Zealand music, with publications on Kiwi 'rock chicks', and most recently, New Zealand glam rock.

Revenue streams continued to diversify as the market rapidly embraced streaming, which now represents 24% of NZ wholesale recording revenues. Although growing, streaming has not yet achieved sufficient subscriber volume to create the returns previously derived from physical product and downloads. A thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts m Media Studies at Massey University, Palmerston North New Zealand. Lauren Anderson 1999 Abstract. Popular music has a strong presence in many contemporary films, frequently replacing, or displacing, the 'classical' soundtrack. The question arises of whether a popular music soundtrack achieves similar functions to traditional, 'classical' film music. Investigating this question is the primary aim of this thesis. An outline of film music theory is followed by an overview of how meaning is produced in popular music. These two areas of discussion are then brought together in the neoformalist analyses of the textual relations between the popular music soundtrack and the narrative, characterisation, and themes of three contemporary films: Sliding Doors (1997, Peter Howitt), Empire Records (1995, Allan Moyle), and Topless Women Talk About Their Lives (1997, Harry Sinclair). The uses and functions of the music in these soundtracks are then compared to the conventions of 'classical' Hollywood film music. This thesis will show that the popular songs in the soundtracks of the three films generally fulfil one or more of six functions which are usually performed by 'classical' Hollywood film music. There are some important differences, however, as the songs frequently draw on features which are specific to popular music.

    Low Budget Music: Three EPs by Samdrub Dawa An exegesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Music in Studio Production at The University of Otago, Dunedin, New Zealand July 2016 Abstract This exegesis sets out to investigate our production of three EPs created on low budgets in Dunedin in order to gain a deeper understanding of our activities and external influences upon them. It is accompanied by these EPs to combine both practice-led research (analysis of practice) and practice-based research (presenting the artefact) approaches to the study of record production. I worked with three musical groups of different styles in an attempt to elicit different production practices in response to their music. I predicate discussions of how the EPs were made with theoretical frameworks to explore them as contexts for our activities. Conceptions of music production are used to view how myself as a record producer apply these to low budget practices. I examine discourse on the role of the record producer for a similar reason. The impact of the “Dunedin Sound” legacy on local musicians and the practices of other local musicians creating music on low budgets frame our activities within Dunedin music to view our similarities and differences. With these discourses in mind I then take a model of music production to structure discussion of each EP under categories of writing, arranging, performing, and recording. The appendices expand on this by detailing the recording, mixing, and mastering activities of each EP as well as providing supporting information, including a diary of all musical activities and personal logs written after each of these activities.

Former splatter-horror director Peter Jackson’s 1994 filmHeavenly Creatures deals with the infamous Parker-Hulme murders that took place in the Cashmere hills just outside the city in 1954, and: exquisitely contrasts the official face of respectable Christchurch, site of the murder, with many of the city’s darker undercurrents, its overt and covert class, sexual and racial hierarchies and oppressions, and its postcolonial psychodynamics of Anglophilia and repression. (2009: 1) Heavenly Creatures portrays the deep contradictions inherent in the Cathedral city, Flat city, ‘city that shines’, more commonly known as the ‘Garden city’ – which won an award for the ‘garden capital of the world’ in 1996, ahead of more than 600 competitors (Glynn, 2009: 9). Its surface veneer of British gothic revival architecture, numerous churches and conservative heritage politics, and its underbelly of violence, crime, murder, mayhem and transgressive youth activities come together in the film’s portrayal of a crime in which, as Redmer Yska has claimed ‘what really rankled [among adults] was that the girls had asserted their separateness from the adult world’ (1993: 63). The Parker-Hume murder provoked New Zealand’s first post-World War II moral panic, and its first public (and international) case of juvenile delinquency, drawing comparisons with the Leopold and Loeb ‘intellectual murder’ in the USA 30 years earlier (Gurr and Cox, 1960: 5).
