In the absence of any Second XI cricket and the One Day Cup competition, the Bob Willis Trophy reports have been expanded to include a write up for each day’s play as well as the full scorecards. Sadly all fixtures were played behind closed doors so hopefully these extended reports will enable readers to get the feeling of actually being at the game! In addition, the Somerset Women’s team reports plus the Boys and Girls Pathway write ups are included in the first half of the book as they now come under the remit of Somerset CCC rather than the Somerset Cricket Board.

  • Leach Takes Three Wickets but Australia XI Build Strong Lead Against England Lions
Jack Leach celebrates with Sam Hain and James Bracey Jul 16, 2019 19:36 BST Leach takes three wickets but Australia XI build strong lead against England Lions SCORECARD: https://www.ecb.co.uk/matches/10411 England Lions trail the Australia XI by 353 runs going into the final day at Canterbury after a day of mixed fortunes. The first hour of day three was almost a carbon copy of the same period on day two. This time, though, it was England who lost quick wickets to bring their innings to a close, 130 behind the tourists. Lewis Gregory and Jack Leach went for ducks, while Sam Curran reached 50 and then got out stumped to spinner Jon Holland. And Jamie Porter was the last to fall, lbw to Chris Tremain. Porter delivered with the ball early on though, having Joe Burns caught in the slips by Sam Hain. Marcus Harris and Kurtis Patterson added 73 before Harris gave Somerset spinner Leach his first wicket of the match, chipping the ball up to Dom Sibley. Leach then dismissed Patterson in his next over thanks to a smart catch from Ollie Robinson at slip. Robinson also picked up his first wicket of the match, and first for the Lions, trapping Mitchell Marsh in front for 26. Test captain Tim Paine batted patiently for 38, only to then get a leading edge to Leach, which took an eternity to come down into the bowler’s hands, bringing reward for bowling unchanged for the entire evening session. Matthew Wade, who scored a century in the first innings, retired hurt over the tea interval having taken a blow on the elbow from Lewis Gregory.

Old Blundellian Cricket Club Ted Crowe Room NEWSLETTER July 2019 We are now into mid season and the World cup fixtures at Taunton are done and dusted. It was great to see the cricketers of the World and their supporters at the CACG and what a weekend when England won the World cup. Dom Bess has been in action for SCC and Lewis Gregory and Jack Leach have been selected for the Test team v Ireland. The T20s are about to start and the CC1 continues with SCC still near the top of the table. Please check availability for the box and liaise with David Dibb if you are intending to visit. OBCC The first OB fixture of the season took place in lovely evening sunshine with a match versus School . Under the captaincy of Liam Lewis the OBs managed a score of 170 with Matt Hague and Tom Frankpitt retiring on 30 after some lusty blows. In reply the school were always in with a shout and needed a six off the last ball to win. Joseph Du Gay faced the last ball and lofted it well over the infield to see his shot just fall short of the boundary and go for a four giving the OBs victory by two runs. Senior pro, Chad Murrin was always in the thick of the action taking two wickets. Many thanks to Liam Lewis for managing the game. INTRODUCTION “When I set my easel up on the boundary edge for the 1st Ashes Test, the boyhood excitement and memories came flooding back. The atmosphere was already building, and it was still only 8 o’clock on the first morning. The players hadn’t even started warming up yet! When they eventually did, I have to admit, I felt like getting my tracksuit on again and joining in, as there is nothing that gets my blood pumping more than a contest against the old enemy, nothing! As the morning went on and the spectators arrived, the atmosphere built to such a degree that you could have cut it with a chainsaw. It was electric, and I couldn’t wait for it to get started. To me, every single delivery in an Ashes Series feels like an event and is so crucial but the first ball in particular of an Ashes Test is always a special moment.

FEBRUARY 2018 Stephen Patterson, 2017 beneficiary and guest at our Annual Lunch, with the Chairman Contents: Chairman’s notes 3 Editorial 4 Dates for your Diaries 6 Annual Lunch Report 8 Martyn Moxon 9 The Future of the County Championship 10 The 2018 Championship 12 Reviews 13 Letters 16 My First Yorkshire Match 18 Fixtures 22 Thoughts of Chairman Chris: The fears many had prior to England’s departure to Australia for the Test series were unfortunately realized; a comprehensive overall defeat with just one draw. Home prepared pitches, in this case hard, dry, fast ones, were the undoing of both batsmen and bowlers. They had the 90mph bowlers, whilst ours were the “seamer” type - no joy for Anderson and Broad. Our batsmen, not used to these pitches, struggled. It is debatable whether Stokes would have affected the overall series - to my mind definitely not. The decision by the ECB to allow him to play in New Zealand, whilst he is awaiting trial, is incomprehensible given that he was not taken to Australia whilst a decision was then awaited as to whether he would be charged. The fact that his anticipated return to the England team (T20) was then the date of his first court appearance only compounded the situation, making it even more farcical. It does not present cricket in anything like the right image. The game is bigger than the individual. We look forward to the new season and note that for the County Championship, of the 14 matches, there are 3 in April and 4 in September.

  • EMBARGOED UNTIL 4PM: England Lions Squad Selected for Match Against Australia A
Warwickshire opener Dom Sibley wins his first Lions selection Jul 06, 2019 16:00 BST EMBARGOED UNTIL 4PM: England Lions squad selected for match against Australia A In-form openers Dom Sibley and Zak Crawley are among four players in line to make their England Lions debuts against Australia A in the four-day match starting on Sunday 14 July. The pair have enjoyed batting at the host venue, Canterbury, in recent weeks – Sibley struck a superb double century for Warwickshire last week, while Crawley averages 49 in his last six innings at his home ground. Gloucestershire batsman James Bracey and Sussex seamer Ollie Robinson are the other two uncapped Lions in the squad, which also contains three players with Test match experience – Ben Foakes, Ben Duckett and Jack Leach. Robinson is joined by the only seamer with more Specsavers County Championship wickets than him in Lewis Gregory. The Somerset all-rounder has been in fine form all season, with his 44 first-class wickets costing just 12 runs apiece, and a batting average of 34 for the Championship leaders. Lions Head Coach Andy Flower said: “We’re really looking forward to a great challenge against a very experienced Australia A side, some of whom will be looking to stake a claim for Ashes selection. “We’ve got a very good squad of players travelling with us to Canterbury; one that’s more than capable of delivering a positive result. “Lions selection is always tricky. We’ve got an eye on the England team’s short-term needs ahead of a busy winter schedule, but we’re looking at some medium- and long-term prospects as well.
