It was great to see the cricketers of the World and their supporters at the CACG and what a weekend when England won the World cup. Dom Bess has been in action for SCC and Lewis Gregory and Jack Leach have been selected for the Test team v Ireland. The T20s are about to start and the CC1 continues with SCC still near the top of the table. Please check availability for the box and liaise with David Dibb if you are intending to visit. OBCC The first OB fixture of the season took place in lovely evening sunshine with a match versus School . Under the captaincy of Liam Lewis the OBs managed a score of 170 with Matt Hague and Tom Frankpitt retiring on 30 after some lusty blows. In reply the school were always in with a shout and needed a six off the last ball to win. Joseph Du Gay faced the last ball and lofted it well over the infield to see his shot just fall short of the boundary and go for a four giving the OBs victory by two runs. Senior pro, Chad Murrin was always in the thick of the action taking two wickets. Many thanks to Liam Lewis for managing the game. To me, every single delivery in an Ashes Series feels like an event and is so crucial but the first ball in particular of an Ashes Test is always a special moment.

Home prepared pitches, in this case hard, dry, fast ones, were the undoing of both batsmen and bowlers. They had the 90mph bowlers, whilst ours were the “seamer” type - no joy for Anderson and Broad. Our batsmen, not used to these pitches, struggled. It is debatable whether Stokes would have affected the overall series - to my mind definitely not. The decision by the ECB to allow him to play in New Zealand, whilst he is awaiting trial, is incomprehensible given that he was not taken to Australia whilst a decision was then awaited as to whether he would be charged. The fact that his anticipated return to the England team (T20) was then the date of his first court appearance only compounded the situation, making it even more farcical. It does not present cricket in anything like the right image. The game is bigger than the individual. We look forward to the new season and note that for the County Championship, of the 14 matches, there are 3 in April and 4 in September.

    Born in Christchurch, New Zealand, in 1991, Ben Stokes moved to Cumbria with his family at the age of 11. He made his debut for Durham CCC in 2009, and just two years later pulled on an England shirt for the frst time. He has scored the fastest Test century at Lord’s and England’s fastest Test double-century. His bowling spell of 6-36 at Trent Bridge in August 2015 helped England to regain the Ashes. In July 2019 Stokes received the Player of the Match accolade in the ICC Cricket World Cup fnal as England won the tournament for the frst time. In the summer’s Ashes series, he scored 441 runs at an average of more than 55, including two centuries and two ffties. His 135 not out in the second innings at Headingley will be remembered as one of the greatest innings in Test history. Stokes has played for the Melbourne Renegades in Australia’s Big Bash League, and Rising Pune Supergiant and the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League. He is married with two young children.
