Their latest title, Sea of Thieves, available on both Xbox One and PC via Xbox Play Anywhere, uses Azure in a variety of interesting and unique ways. In this document, we will explore the Azure services and cloud architecture choices made by Rare to bring Sea of Thieves to life. Sea of Thieves is a “Shared World Adventure Game”. Players take on the role of a pirate with other live players (friends or otherwise) as part of their crew. The shared world is filled with other live players also sailing around in their ships with their crew. Players can go out and tackle quests or play however they wish in this sandboxed environment and will eventually come across other players doing the same. When other crews are discovered, a player can choose to attack, team up to accomplish a task, or just float on by. Creating and maintaining this seamless world with thousands of players is quite a challenge. Below is a simple architecture diagram showing some of the pieces that drive the backend services of Sea of Thieves. Automated Testing of Gameplay Features in Sea of Thieves Good morning everyone Thanks for coming. Can I remind everyone to silence their cell phones and fill out their surveys after the talk. I’m Robert Masella and I’m a software engineer at Rare. Because we’d had such bad experiences with testing on our previous projects, when we started work on our latest project Sea of Thieves, we decided to completely change our approach. Instead of relying on manual testing, we used automated testing to check every part of the codebase, including gameplay features, which are often notoriously tricky to test. In this talk, I’m going to walk you through our approach, our learnings and how we benefited from it. 1 About Me • • • • -- First a few quick details about me - I’ve been a gameplay engineer at Rare for almost 14 years. For those who don’t know Rare, we’re a Microsoft first party studio with a long history of game development. We’re based in central England and currently have around 200 people on staff. - The notable projects I’ve worked on at Rare are Banjo Kazooie Nuts and Bolts, all three of our Kinect Sports games and now for the last four years Sea of Thieves - At Rare, gameplay engineers do a bit of everything and tend not to specialise too much. The games recommended in this guide were curated by researchers at EEDAR, a market-leading video game research firm, in collaboration with mental health researchers at UCSD. This guide was designed as a quick reference to help caretakers quickly select games for their patients. Caretakers can reference the category that best fits the symptoms of the patient and select one of the games listed. When selecting an appropriate game, the user should first select the appropriate symptom and age category of the child, and then select a title based on the available gaming platforms at the facility. Note: Virtual Reality Games are currently not recommended by the manufacturer for children under the age of 12. Methodology EEDAR operates the largest video game attribute database in the world containing over 170 million game facts. To create the recommendations in this guide, EEDAR collaborated with mental health researchers to create a hierarchy of over one hundred game features related to positive health. EEDAR then classified thousands of video games based on these features. EEDAR then collaborated with mental health researchers to determine which features should correspond to which symptom groups. EEDAR’s proprietary recommendation technology was used to select the titles recommended in this guide.
