Pajouhesh & Sazandegi No 74 pp: 27-39 Identification and distribution of fish fauna in Siahdarvishan river (Anzali Wetland basin) By: K. Abbasi, S. Moraadkha, and A. Sarpanah, Ecology Dept, National Inland Water Aquaculture Institute, Bandar Anzali, Iran. The Siahdarvishan river is one of the important rivers entering to Anzali Lagoon and it has an important role in restoration of Caspian Sea migratory fishes annually. Main purposes of the study were: Determination of fish diversity, spatial and temporal distribution and present role of the river in restoration of migratory fishes. Studied fishes have been sampled in 8 stations from Upstream (Toolamshahr) as far as 20 km to downstream (Lakesaar) from winter 1998 until fall 2000. Electroschoker, cast net and beach seine were used to catch them. Results showed that 30 species and subspecies fish belonging to 11 families: Lampreys (Petromyzontidae), Sturgeons (Acipenseridae), Shads (Clupeidae), minnows (Cyprinidae), catfish (Siluridae), loaches (Cobitidae), pikes (Esocidae), salmon (Salmonidae), Mosquito fishes (Poeciliidae), Perches (Percidae) and gobies (Gobiidae) exist in the river so that Cyprinidae with 20 species and maximum abundance (95.9%) is prevalent and others had one represent. Capoeta capoeta gracilis was prevalent in total seasons and in stations 1, 3, 4 and 6, too and Carassius auratus gibelio in stations 2, 5, 7 and 8. In addition, C. capoeta gracilis, C. auratus gibelio and Chalcalburnus chalcoides with abundance 36.61, 26.17 and 9.94 % of total number of caught fishes in the study were respectively abundant. In the study was observed the least diversity (13 species) in upstream station (S 1) and the most diversity (27 species) in downstream station (S 8). The mentioned species with Alburnoides bipunctatus, Barbus capito, Rutilus frisii kutum and Vimba vimba persa were observed in total stations. Among identified fish species in the study, were 9 species belong to migratory (anadromous), 19 species belong to freshwater resident and 2 species had both forms. 7 species were identified as alien or exotic which some of them had high dispersion and high abundance and therefore they are dangerous for native fish species and migratory fishes restoration. • Phylogenetic Relationships of Freshwater Fishes of the Genus Capoeta (Actinopterygii, Cyprinidae) in Iran
Received: 3 May 2016 | Revised: 8 August 2016 | Accepted: 9 August 2016 DOI: 10.1002/ece3.2411 ORIGINAL RESEARCH Phylogenetic relationships of freshwater fishes of the genus Capoeta (Actinopterygii, Cyprinidae) in Iran Hamid Reza Ghanavi | Elena G. Gonzalez | Ignacio Doadrio Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales, Biodiversity and Evolutionary Abstract Biology Department, CSIC, Madrid, Spain The Middle East contains a great diversity of Capoeta species, but their taxonomy re- Correspondence mains poorly described. We used mitochondrial history to examine diversity of the Hamid Reza Ghanavi, Department of algae- scraping cyprinid Capoeta in Iran, applying the species- delimiting approaches Biology, Lund University, Lund, Sweden. Email: [email protected] General Mixed Yule- Coalescent (GMYC) and Poisson Tree Process (PTP) as well as haplotype network analyses. Using the BEAST program, we also examined temporal divergence patterns of Capoeta. The monophyly of the genus and the existence of three previously described main clades (Mesopotamian, Anatolian- Iranian, and Aralo- Caspian) were confirmed. However, the phylogeny proposed novel taxonomic findings within Capoeta. Results of GMYC, bPTP, and phylogenetic analyses were similar and suggested that species diversity in Iran is currently underestimated. At least four can- didate species, Capoeta sp4, Capoeta sp5, Capoeta sp6, and Capoeta sp7, are awaiting description. Capoeta capoeta comprises a species complex with distinct genetic line- ages. The divergence times of the three main Capoeta clades are estimated to have occurred around 15.6–12.4 Mya, consistent with a Mio- Pleistocene origin of the di- versity of Capoeta in Iran. The changes in Caspian Sea levels associated with climate fluctuations and geomorphological events such as the uplift of the Zagros and Alborz Mountains may account for the complex speciation patterns in Capoeta in Iran.

Corresponding author: *E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Members of the genus Cobitis in the southern Caspian Sea basin of Iran are found from the Atrak to Aras Rivers. Two species, namely C. keyvani and C. faridpaki had been already described from this distribution range. However, previous study revealed that C. keyvani is a junior synonym of C. faridpaki, therefore populations of the eastern part of the Sefid River are C. faridpaki and those of the western part of this basin represent an undescribed species misidentified as C. keyvani in previous studies. Here we describe and compare it with other species of this genus from Iran based on morphological and molecular (COI barcode region) characters. Keywords: Freshwater fish, Morphology, COI, Spined loach, Sefid River. They are found in Eurasia and Morocco (North Africa) and Southern Asia (Eschmeyer and Fong 2011).

We evaluated the effects of the Shahid-Rajaei dam, 14 years after its construction, on morphometric and genetic divergence between up- and downstream populations of the Iranian fish Siah- Mahi (Capoeta capoeta gracilis). Sixty-six specimens were analyzed. There were significant differences between the 2 groups in the means Genetics and Molecular Research 12 (3): 3465-3478 (2013) ©FUNPEC-RP www.funpecrp.com.br H. AnvariFar et al. 3466 of 16 morphometric characters (univariate analysis). In discriminant function analysis, the proportion of individuals classified into their original groups was 97 and 100% for up- and downstream populations, respectively. Principal component analysis of morphometric data demonstrated that the up- and downstream samples of Siah-Mahi are clearly distinct. In the genetic analysis, 6 informative primers produced 89 polymorphic bands with 95% polymorphism.

After anesthesia, using 1% clove oil solution, the specimens were fixed in 10% buffered formalin and transferred to the Ichthyology Museum of Isfahan University of Technology for further studies. The left sides of the specimens were photographed using a copy-stand equipped with a digital camera. To extract body shape data, 13 homologous landmark-points were digitized using tpsDig2 software. After GPA superimposing, the landmark data, were analyzed using Principal Components Analysis (PCA), Canonical Variate Analysis (CVA) and Cluster Analysis (CA) to explore the patterns of variation in their body shape. All multivariate analyses were computed using PAST software. The consensus configuration of populations was visualized using the wireframe graphs in MorphoJ to compare their shape difference. The PCA, CVA and CA showed differences among the populations, especially, between Konjancham and other populations. This result showed that geometric morphometric methods could separate trout barb populations of the Tigris River Basin from each other to a great extent.

AN ABSTRPCT OF THE THESIS OF Neil Brant Anuantzout for the degree of Dcctor of Philosophy in Fisheries presented on 2 Title: The Freshwater Fishes of Iran Redacted for Privacy hs tract approved: Dr. Carl E. Bond The freshwater fish fauna of Iran is representedby 3 classes, 1 orders, 31 familIes, 90 genera, 269species and 58 subspecIes. This includes 8 orders, 10 families, 14 generaand 33 species with marine representatives that live at least partof the tixne in freshwater. Also included are one family, 7 genera,9 species and 4 subspecies introduced into Iran. Overhalf the species and nearly half the genera are in the family Cypririidae; over75% of the genera and species are in the orderCypriniformes. The fish fauna may be separated into threemajor groups. The largest and nst diverse is the Sannatian Fauna, which includes the Caspian Sea, Azerbaijan, Lake Bezaiyeh, Rhorasan,Isfahan, Dashte-Kavir, and the four subbasins of the Namak LakeBasins. Of the fish found in Iran, 14 of 31 earnilies, 48 of 90 genera,127 of 269 species and 46 of 58 subspecies are found in theSarmatian Fauna. Endemisa is low, and nstly expressed at the subspecific level. The fauna contains marine relicts from the Sannatian Sea and recentinmigrants with strong relationships to the fishes of Europe, the Black Seaand northern Asia. The marine relicts are absent outside the Caspian Sea Basin, where the fauna is best described as a depauperate extensionof the Caspian and Aral Sea faunas. The second major fauna is the Nesopotamian Fauna, and includes the Tigris and Euphrates river Basins, the Karun1iver Basin, and the Kol, nd, Maliarlu, Neyriz and Lar Basins.
