In 2018 she performed in Beethoven’s Fidelio (RFH) with the Lon- don Philharmonic Orchestra as part of the South Bank’s Belief and Beyond Be- lief festival. Rachel’s oratorio repertoire encompasses Bach and Handel through Mozart and Ross- ini to Tippett and Orff. She has performed Saariaho’s La Passion de Simone in the Barbican, UK and in the Lin- coln Centre, New York under the direction of Peter Sellars, works by Lutoslawski and Penderecki at the Lugano Music Festival with Terry Edwards, and can be heard on the soundtrack of many films, including Harry Potter, The Hobbit, Star Wars and Beauty and the Beast! She is a member of the duo Sopriola. Within ensembles Rachel has worked with Richard Hickox, Simon Rattle, Roger Nor- rington, Emmanuelle Haim, Charles Mack- erras, Ivan Fischer, and Vladimir Jurowski, performing with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, European Voices, Col- legium Musicum 90, Le Concerts d’Astre, Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, The SIMON GODSILL Schutz Choir, London Voices and The Acad- emy of Ancient Music.

The orchestra is playing, the soprano is singing. Then, without warning, all I the players stand up and sing the chorus. The audience gasps. The next night, it’s Verdi’s opera Falsta, and this time the audience just keeps gasping. The characters intertwine and react with the orchestra. They argue with the conductor, who grins and tut-tuts and, when Falsta hits rock bottom, gives him a cloth and a cup of wine. All of which would be amazing enough. But there is also the MENU thrilling fact that Falsta was Verdi’s last opera, and I am watching it in the last building of Andrea Palladio, arguably the greatest and certainly the most influential architect who ever lived. This first Vicenza Opera Festival at the Teatro Olimpico consists of two performances of Falsta and a gala concert. The conductor Ivan Fischer created the shows and brought his Budapest Festival Orchestra, which he set up in 1983 as an annual-festival institution. It became a permanent orchestra in 1992, but he kept the word “festival” in the title.
