A Statistical Scoring System for Manager Voting for the Rawlings Gold Glove Award Emily Moran Wayne State University April 2016 Thesis Advisor: Dr. Daniel Frohardt, Department of Mathematics Emily Moran 1 Introduction Every year at the end of the Major League Baseball season, Rawlings awards the Gold Glove award to the best fielding player at each position in both the National and American Leagues. Different from most awards, the Gold Glove is not given based on performance data alone. Instead, managers and coaches across the league vote for the players they believe should be awarded this honor. Players must be qualified for the award, and managers and coaches may not vote for their own players1. However, this award has the potential to invoke controversy because it is given according to votes. Some managers and coaches may not know who to vote for and end up voting based almost entirely on name recognition.
