New York, NY (Sept. 24, 2013) – Hudson Music is excited to announce the release of Mike Mangini: The Grid, A System for Creative Drumming and Improvisation, a new 2 DVD set that presents a complete system for expanding your skills as a creative player and improviser, focusing in on your own musical identity. This system is presented through performed examples and graphics, and is usable by drummers of all styles. Dividing your drumming into time signature, subdivision, dynamics, instrument sounds, limbs, style, and phrases, Mike demonstrates dozens of grooves, fills, and patterns from easy to extremely advanced. He systematically shows you how to use the Grid to expand your understanding of music and drumming, and improve your physical abilities. Filmed in two different studios on two different drum kits, including Mike's signature Dream Theater setup during the recording of the band's latest album, this DVD presents a brand-new and unique philosophy by one of the leading drummers of our time. Using Mike’s system, you can grow exponentially as a drummer by increasing your speed, developing better independence, learning to use ostinatos and expanding your knowledge of styles. You will also learn to use polyrhythms, play in odd time signatures, develop a deeper understanding of the basics of rhythm and become a more creative player. The Grid gives you a complete, intelligent, and fascinating system to achieve all this and more. “Mike’s new system is simply amazing!” says Hudson Music President, Rob Wallis. “There is so much you can learn and it just makes so much sense. That is why we had to do a 2 DVD set.” This deluxe package includes an extensive PDF eBook with over 50 transcribed examples, as well as extensive text, definitions and diagrams of the Grid. There are also two bonus drum solos, including one filmed on tour with Dream Theater. Mike Mangini is an accomplished educator, clinician and Grammy nominated drummer. He has taught at the prestigious Berklee College of Music, has drumming awards too numerous to list and is officially the World’s Fastest Drummer in five categories. All of them equally progressive in their own way, and in some ways, share a common thread between them. But, ask any diehard prog-rock fan and I guarantee another name comes up each and every time: Gentle Giant. Although never quite attaining the same level of sales or status of celebrity as the aforementioned, Gentle Giant most certainly made a statement, left a mark and carved their names into the history books of English prog. A mixture of rock, funk, jazz, classical, and even a bit of punk, Gentle Giant was as progressive as they come—and then some. Holding down the fort for the better part of eight years was John Weathers. Although not their original drummer, it was Weathers that helped propel Gentle Giant to international fame with an interesting mix of bombastic backbeat, an ear for tuned percussion and the ability to play any time signature and style thrown his way. On my interview list from the beginning, John wasn’t an easy man to fi nd. A few Internet searches every so often didn’t turn up much until I happened to stumble across ‘Two Weeks In Pain - Under The Knife’ [http:// www.gorgg.org/UnderKnife1.htm], a twenty-fi ve-episode online diary of John’s experience in the hospital and under the care of the N.H.S.

They consist of a single head in a die-cast zinc or aluminum frame. Unlike most other drums, they have a variable definite pitch. Composers are known to write for them as tuned instruments, demanding specific pitches. Rototoms are often used to extend the tom range of a standard drum kit. They were invented by the drumhead company Remo. They can be tuned quickly by rotating the head, which sits in a threaded metal ring. Rotation raises or lowers the tension hoop relative to the rim, which increases or decreases the pitch of the drum by increasing or decreasing the tension of the drum head. Master James Holland, former percussionist of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, highly recommends them in his book "Percussion",[1] which is part of the Yehudi Menuhin Music Guides series. Rototoms are often used as a training substitute for timpani students, as they have a very similar sound, are not as loud and expensive as timpani, and do not require as much room space. A few drumming greats who used rototoms were Bill Bruford and Terry Bozzio. Roger Taylor of Duran Duran used rototoms extensively on their self titled debut album Duran Duran of 1981. Roger Taylor of Queen has used rototoms since the early 1970s most recently in the cover of "Let There Be Drums" on the Return of the Champions DVD and album.

  • Dream Theatre – Octavarium
Metal may be one of the most experimented with music genres. Different types of metal have been tried and loved by many, but none have the style and artistic value that symphonic/orchestral metal has. This style of metal uses the sounds of an orchestra to create almost psychedelic music. Many bands have done this form of metal before, but honestly not many have been known for it as much as Dream Theater. Dream Theater was formed in the mid-eighties by John Petrucci, John Myung and Mike Portnoy while they were attending the Berklee College of Music. They were originally known as Majesty, because Mike Portnoy commented that the Rush song “Bastille Day” sounded “Majestic”. In 1986 the name Dream Theater was suggested by Mike Portnoy’s father. Dream Theater consisted (at the time) of John Petrucci, Mike Portnoy, Charlie Dominici, Kevin Moore, and John Myung and in 1988, they signed their first record contract with Mechanic. In 1989, Charlie Dominici was let go and in 1991 replaced with James LaBrie as vocalist. In 1994 Keyboardist Kevin Moore quit Dream Theater to concentrate on his own musical interests and he was replaced with Jordan Rudess. This was the band they had until 2010 when Mike Portnoy left the band and was replaced with Mike Mangini on drums. They reached gold record certification in the USA and platinum in Japan for the album Images and Words (1992) and in 2005 they became the last group to use the Hit Factory Studios which closed on April 1st of that same year.
