They were dug for chalk used in lime burning and brick making. The last 100 years has added munitions storage, mushroom growing and becoming an air-raid shelter for over 15,000 people every night during the Blitz. After the war it became a venue for dances and concerts – maybe you remember going to a dance there. Our guided tour is at 12.15 so we can meet in the lobby at 12.05. There are no steps but the ground is uneven and the lighting low. The tour takes 45 minutes and covers a distance of about a mile. There are no toilets within the caves and there is a warning for those of a nervous disposition or a fear of the dark. If you are worried about the suitability please give me a ring. There is a gift shop and a café on the site. The address is – Chislehurst Caves, Old Hill, Chislehurst, Kent BR7 5NL. It is near Bromley. For map and directions see over. Meet in the Visitor Centre at 12.05pm . Carol’s Mobile for 21st March only is 07790 362523 Please return the slip below together with your cheque made payable to Aviva Fellowship to Carol at the above address by Friday 2nd March 2018. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------detach here Chislehurst Caves Tour – Wednesday 21st March 2018 Email Address …………………. ………………………………..… Tel. There is no direct service from the Croydon area. From the station turn left to the end of Station Approach, turn right and right again. Bus: 162 from Beckenham Junction takes 30 minutes via Bromley. There is a diversion in place in Beckenham Town centre but I don’t think this will effect catching the bus. Also 269 from Bromley. The buses stop on the A222 near the station. Walk along Station Approach past the station. Allow 10 min for the walk. Car: From the M25, I recommend leaving at junction 3 and taking the A20 towards London. After 5 miles, turn left on to the A222 towards Chislehurst. After about 1.5 miles go straight ahead at a roundabout then almost immediately right into Old Hill. There are plenty of brown direction signs from there onwards. There is a free car park. .
