Imagined Identity and Cross-Cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE Tien-Yi Chao National Taiwan University
ISSN: 2519-1268 Issue 9 (Summer 2019), pp. 59-87 DOI: 10.6667/interface.9.2019.86 Russia/Russians on Ice: Imagined Identity and Cross-cultural Communication in Yuri!!! on ICE tien-yi chao National Taiwan University Abstract Yuri!!! on ICE (2016; 2017) is a Japanese TV anime featuring multinational figure skaters com- peting in the ISU Grand Prix of Figure Skating Series. The three protagonists, including two Russian skaters Victor Nikiforov, and Yuri Purisetsuki (Юрий Плисецкий), and one Japanese skater Yuri Katsuki (勝生勇利), engage in extensive cross-cultural discourses. This paper aims to explore the ways in which Russian cultures, life style, and people are ‘glocalised’ in the anime, not only for the Japanese audience but also for fans around the world. It is followed by a brief study of Russian fans’ response to YOI’s display of Russian memes and Taiwanese YOI fan books relating to Russia and Russians in YOI. My reading of the above materials suggests that the imagined Russian identity in both the official anime production and the fan works can be regarded as an intriguing case of cross-cultural communication and cultural hybridisation. In 2016 the cherry blossom season hit its peak in Kyoto and Tokyo at the end of March and beginning of April provid- ing some great displays. In2017, the season initially was fore- cast to be slightly early, but ended up a little late due to cold weather. The 2018 cherry blossom season was more than a week early in some locations and a few days early at others. Due to positive feedback from our guests we are repeating our core two-week cherry blossom tours that begin and end in To- kyo in each case. The first of these tours commences on March 17th with start dates of 31st March and 14th April for the other two. We have also designed a set of 10-day tours. The Bounded Embodiment of Fandom in China: Recovering Shifting Media Experiences and Fan Participation Through an Oral History of Animation-Comics-Games Lovers
International Journal of Communication 12(2018), 3317–3334 1932–8036/20180005 The Bounded Embodiment of Fandom in China: Recovering Shifting Media Experiences and Fan Participation Through an Oral History of Animation-Comics-Games Lovers YIN YIYI XIE ZHUOXIAO The Chinese University of Hong Kong, China The synchronic patterns and outcomes of relationship building between fans and fan objects have received much attention in fan studies. Instead of taking an overly presentist view, as historical research on fandom often has done, this research treats fan participation—the construction of fan–object relationships—as a sociohistorical practice, highlighting the longitudinal transformations of fandom in specific social contexts. Drawing on oral history and autobiography among animation-comics-games (ACG) lovers, we examine changes in media practices, participation, and identification since the 1990s in a Chinese context. We argue that in the evolution of ACG fandom, the significance of mass media has not resided in forming new fan practices or fan–object relationships. Rather, mass media have played a role in changing the forms and meanings of the embodiment of the imaginary and the affective relationships between fan and object. The shifting embodiments provide fans with hints of situated experiences and priority of meanings regarding being-in-the-fandom. Keywords: fan culture, fan participation, media practice, embodiment of object relation, ACG culture, fandom history, Chinese context Many studies have investigated the synchronic patterns -
Japan's First Western Glass Factory
●Shinagawa Historical Museum Explanatory Sheet Japan’s First Western Glass Factory The Beginnings of Modern Glass Manufacturing In 1873, Niwa Masatsune founded the Kogyo Company, Glass flower vase ► Japan’s first western-style glass factory, along the Tokyo National Meguro River in the grounds of Tokai-ji Temple Museum Collection (Kita-Shinagawa 4-11, Shinagawa City, Tokyo). The Kogyo Company invited the British engineer Thomas Walton, and introduced British machinery and manufacturing techniques. The factory attempted to make glass plates by inserting a cut into a hot glass rod 30–50 centimeters across and 1.2–1.8 meters long and then rolling it out into a sheet, but the experiment ended in failure. The Publicly Managed Shinagawa Glass Works Kogyo Company was purchased by the Meiji Government in 1876 as one aspect of its industrial vitalization policies, and became the publicly managed Shinagawa Glass Works. This purchase was made to The Privately Managed Shinagawa Glass Works meet the growing demand for plate glass required for While the Shinagawa Glass Works succeeded in Western-style buildings, and navigation lights for ships. manufacturing glass, domestic demand was low and Fujiyama Tanehiro from the Saga Domain (the sales revenue was a constant struggle. Adding to this, the present-day area around Saga City, Saga Prefecture), failure to produce plate glass led to a loss of confidence who studied at a glass factory in Vienna, succeeded in in the management, which resulted in the factory being producing navigation lights, and in 1879, Fujiyama went liquidated to the public in 1884.
