1 Police Chief No, Chief Politician Yes the Life of Leon Mercer Jordan, and the Shaping Memories of His Father and Grandfather
1 Police Chief No, Chief Politician Yes The Life of Leon Mercer Jordan, and the Shaping Memories of His Father and Grandfather By Robert M. Farnsworth 2 Dedicated to James C. Olson, whose professional dedication to history led him to complete his biography of Stuart Symington despite years of physical difficulty near the end of his life. His example challenged me in my elder years to tell the story of a remarkable man who made a significant difference in my life. 3 Preface How All This Began I moved from Detroit to Kansas City with my wife and four children in the summer of 1960 to assume my first tenure-track position as an Assistant Professor of American Literature at Kansas City University. The civil rights movement was gathering steam and I had made a couple of financial contributions to the Congress of Racial Equality while still in Detroit. CORE then asked if I were interested in becoming more socially active. I said yes, but I was moving to Kansas City. It took them months to catch up with me again in Kansas City and repeat their question. I again said yes. A few weeks later a field representative was sent to Kansas City to organize those who had showed interest. He called the first meeting in our home. Most who attended were white except for Leon and Orchid Jordan and Larry and Opal Blankinship. Most of us did not know each other, except the Jordans and the Blankinships were well acquainted. The rep insisted we organize and elect officers. -

1 CENTER FOR FLORIDA HISTORY ORAL HISTORY PROGRAM INTERVIEW WITH: HOMER HOOKS INTERVIEWER: JAMES M. DENHAM PLACE: LAKELAND, FLORIDA DATE: JULY 29, 2003 M= JAMES M. DENHAM (Mike) H= HOMER HOOKS M: Today we are interviewing Mr. Homer Hooks and we are going to talk today about the legacy of Lawton Chiles and hopefully follow this up with future discussions of Mr. Hooks’ business career and career in politics. Good morning Mr. Hooks. H: Good morning, Mike. M: As I mentioned, we, really, in the future want to talk about your service in World War II and also your business career, but today we would like to focus on your memories of Lawton Chiles. Even so, can you tell us a little bit about where you were born as well as giving us a brief biographical sketch? H: Yes, Mike. I was born in Columbia, South Carolina, on January 10, 1921. My family moved to Lake County actually in Florida when I was a child. I was 4 or 5 years old, I guess. We lived in Clermont in south Lake County. My grandfather was a pioneer. He platted the town of Clermont. The rest of the family also lived north of Clermont in the Leesburg area, but we considered ourselves pioneer Florida residents. Those were the days in 1926, ‘27 and ‘28 days and so forth. I grew up in Clermont - grammar school and high school and then immediately went to the University of Florida in 1939 and graduated in 1943, as some people have said, when the earth’s crust was still cooling, so long ago. -

Handguns of the Massachusetts Arms Company
Handguns of the Massachusetts Arms Co. by L. W. Jones The subject of this paper, the Massachusetts Arms Com- )any, has been partially covered in many sources, but iever has it been completely covered. Since it is a quite :omplicated subject I, too, shall not attempt to cover the ubject completely, but to limit myself to the percussion evolvers produced by this company. This is fitting, as the nanufacture of percussion revolvers was the reason the :ompany was formed and they were the main product of he company for the first ten years of its life. The Massachusetts Arms Company was formed late in .849 and incorporated on March 5th, 1850, but the story of ts percussion revolvers starts much earlier. On April 29th, 1837, Daniel Leavitt, of Cabotsville, Mas- ,achusetts, received patent #I82 for a revolver which :laimed "the giving of the chambered or forward end of he cylinder a convex form, by which the ignition of the manufactured by Edwin Wesson. Correspondence ;barge in a chamber contiguous to that which is being between Leavitt, Wesson, and the Ordnance Department 'ired is prevented."
