INTRODUCTION

Doordarshan’s Mumbai channel came on map of Television history on 2nd October 1972. Initially the telecast was in black & white and the duration was about 2 hours per day. Also, the transmission went through a small transmitter which catered the need of few T.V. households. Going through various stages DDK Mumbai today has become one of the major centres in . Today DDK Mumbai manages transmission of two 24 hours channels namely DD1 (National Network) and Sahyadri (RLSS). DDK Mumbai runs the regional language satellite channel ‘Sahyadri’ with round the clock transmission on satellite mode and with terrestrial support on National Network from 06.00 am to 09.00 am and 03.00 pm to 08.00 pm. With overall technical and production development we are in a position to produce more than 70 % in-house programmes.

) To showcase the Real Maharashtra Culture, its values, traditions, modernization, diversity and its unity through programmes of high quality in the highest tradition of Public Service Broadcasting with true Indian National Spirit.

DD Sahyadri is the only Public Service Broadcaster among all Marathi TV Channel available in Maharashtra. The channel keeps its mandate to telecast programmes useful to people in their day-to-day life as well as for their overall development. The Channel devotes more than 46 % of its time to telecast informative, educative and other Public Service Programmes.

DD-Sahyadri: The essence of Maharashtra – A Marathi Channel of Doordarshan.

Doordarshan’s Marathi Regional Programme Channel was born on the 9th August 1986 with a Terrestrial Transmitter at Mumbai.

DD Sahyadri is the Satellite Channel, which was launched on 15th August, 1994. It became a round the clock service in 2000. Supported by Doordarshan Studios in Mumbai, and , DD Sahyadri is a household name in Maharashtra, largely because of its programmes with high production values. Despite stiff competition from private satellite channels, DD Sahyadri holds its own platform with acclaimed serials, informative programmes, public debates and film based programmes. DD Sahyadri also felicitates eminent citizens and personalities of Maharashtra for their contribution in different fields, by honouring them with the different Sahyadri Awards i.e. 3

Navratna Awards, Manik Awards, Sahyadri Marathi Cine Awards, Navjyoti Awards, Krishiratna Awards, and Hirkani Awards. DD Sahyadri is uplinked from Mumbai through INSAT-3A Satellite in C-Band and can be watched in the entire footprint area of INSAT-3A. It is also available in DD-Direct Plus Doordarshan’s -to-air DTH Service.

Technical Upgradation

• 2nd June 1999 Inauguration of New Studio Complex comprising of major technical setup of 4 studios of different sizes, with teleclimbers & Dimmer control, Production control, Playback, MSR. Digital equipments like digital VCRs, Cameras, NLE, Server, Special Effect equipments introduced in this setup. • 30th MAY 2002 Multichannel, Digital Terrestrial Transmitters NEC CH#21 carrying 5 channels in terrestrial mode conforming to DVB-T made operational.

• 31st December 2003 & 11th MARCH 2004 Old valve type 10 KW analog transmitters replaced by new 20 KW NEC PCN 1620SSPH/1 solid state transmitters for terrestrial transmission of DD National CH#12 and DD News channel CH#6.

• 7th August 2003 3 channel Digital Earth Station with state of Art technology commissioned replacing analog uplink facility. Studio Earth Station chain made digital with optical fibre connectivity.

• September, 2004 Film Section for National Network established at DDK, Mumbai in and entire activity related to films procurement, technical preview and uplinking shifted to the Kendra from Delhi.

• During 2005-06 Digitalization of Studio Production with introduction of digital VCRs, Cameras, Switchers, Routers, digital phone-in-consoles etc. Entire in-house production and studio chain from acquisition, production to playback and uplink

• During 2006-07 Digitalization of Post production alongwith installation of high-end compositing and editing system of Smoke & Flame

• During 2007-08 Further digitalization of the Kendra by installation of several state of art equipments like Servers, 3 D Graphics etc. and upgradation of the existing setup.

TECHNICAL ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE KENDRA DURING THE YEAR 2010-11

• During the year 2010-2011 a number of new state of art equipments were supplied to the Kendra. These equipments had been successfully installed and are being utilised by the Kendra. Some of these equipments are :

• Play out automation with tapeless environment, a first in its kind in the DD Network has been commissioned at DDK Mumbai with a central based SAN, four NLEs and a automatic play out server for transmission.

• IT Division has commissioned a LAN with 50 computers having facility of messaging, Internet facility, VPN, Data Server, Mail Server etc.

• Approximate 35 OB coverage of which Standard Chartered Mumbai Marathon, Common Wealth Youth Games Pune, International Robocon Pune, etc. are prominent.

• A number of developmental works for improving the working set up and for functional efficiency were carried out at the Kendra like :

o Design and development of software for remote control and operation of IRDs with enhanced capability to work through telephone lines and also through network and on web.

o Design and successful installation of control unit for 7 port patch panel for 2x20 KW transmitters.

o Design and successful installation of illumination controlled switch for automatically switching on and off of aviation lights 9
