From Volume 1 through 82 (in part) , the articles were issued as separates with only the volume number, page numbers and year printed on each. Articles in Volume 82 (in part) through 89 were issued with volume number, article number, page numbers and year. -

Biodiversidad El cambio climático global y la pérdida de la biodiversidad son dos de los problemas ambientales más importantes que enfrenta la humanidad hoy día. La expansión e intensificación de las actividades humanas desde mediados del siglo pasado han cambiado radicalmente el funcionamiento en muchos ecosistemas en diversas regiones del mundo e, incluso, han alterado los patrones de biodiversidad a nivel local y regional. En algunos casos, estos cambios han provocado la extinción de muchas especies. Estimaciones sugieren que la tasa actual de extinción de especies a nivel mundial podría ser entre 10 y 1 000 veces mayor a la registrada con anterioridad a la presencia humana (Pimm et al., 1995). No obstante, los grandes esfuerzos que se han hecho en las últimas dos décadas a nivel internacional para conservar y utilizar sustentablemente la biodiversidad, han sido insuficientes para avanzar hacia el cumplimiento de las Metas de Aichi para la Diversidad Biológica (SCBD, 2014). De no haber cambios importantes, los pronósticos basados en la proyección de las tendencias actuales de los factores de presión más importantes, sugieren que la pérdida de la riqueza biológica global podría continuar cuando menos hasta el año 2020 (SCDB, 2010). Los efectos de la pérdida de la biodiversidad no se restringen al aspecto ambiental. Es ampliamente reconocido que el bienestar social y el desarrollo económico de las naciones, y en particular el de los países en desarrollo y el de las comunidades más vulnerables, están fincados en la continuidad de los servicios ambientales que brindan los ecosistemas y su biodiversidad (MEA, 2005). Para muchos países, incluido México, la pérdida de biodiversidad cobra mayor relevancia debido a que es considerado como uno de los centros de diversidad biológica más importantes del planeta, de hecho, forma parte del grupo de los 15 países megadiversos que concentran en conjunto entre el 60 y 70% de la biodiversidad global (Mittermeier et al., 1997; UNEP 2010). -
About the Book the Format Acknowledgments
About the Book For more than ten years I have been working on a book on bryophyte ecology and was joined by Heinjo During, who has been very helpful in critiquing multiple versions of the chapters. But as the book progressed, the field of bryophyte ecology progressed faster. No chapter ever seemed to stay finished, hence the decision to publish online. Furthermore, rather than being a textbook, it is evolving into an encyclopedia that would be at least three volumes. Having reached the age when I could retire whenever I wanted to, I no longer needed be so concerned with the publish or perish paradigm. In keeping with the sharing nature of bryologists, and the need to educate the non-bryologists about the nature and role of bryophytes in the ecosystem, it seemed my personal goals could best be accomplished by publishing online. This has several advantages for me. I can choose the format I want, I can include lots of color images, and I can post chapters or parts of chapters as I complete them and update later if I find it important. Throughout the book I have posed questions. I have even attempt to offer hypotheses for many of these. It is my hope that these questions and hypotheses will inspire students of all ages to attempt to answer these. Some are simple and could even be done by elementary school children. Others are suitable for undergraduate projects. And some will take lifelong work or a large team of researchers around the world. Have fun with them! The Format The decision to publish Bryophyte Ecology as an ebook occurred after I had a publisher, and I am sure I have not thought of all the complexities of publishing as I complete things, rather than in the order of the planned organization. -

Ambrose, Co-Chair Professor Vance T. Vredenburg, Co-Chair Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd), a fungal pathogen that causes chytridiomycosis in amphibians, has infected >500 species and caused declines and extinctions in >200 species. Recently, a second deadly fungal pathogen that also causes chytridiomycosis, Batrachochytrium salamandrivorans (Bsal) was discovered. The presence of these lethal pathogens in international trade threatens amphibian diversity. In this dissertation, I use a novel modeling approach to predict disease risk from Bd and/or Bsal to amphibian populations in North America and Asia by incorporating pathogen habitat suitability, host availability, the potential presence of an invasive carrier species, and pathogen invasion history. First I identify Bsal threat to North American salamanders to be greatest in the Southeast US, the West Coast, and highlands of Mexico. I then ii investigate the compounded risk of Bd and Bsal in North America and find highest relative risk in those same areas and in the Sierra Nevada Mountains and the northern Rocky Mountains. -

Phylogenetic reconstructions derived from DNA sequence data have played a central role in these revisionary studies but have typically under-sampled the diverse frog family Microhylidae. Here, we present a detailed phylogenetic study focused on expanding previous hypotheses of relationships within this cosmopolitan family. Specifically, we placed an emphasis on assessing relationships among New World genera and those taxa with uncertain phylogenetic affinities (i.e., incertae sedis). Results: One mitochondrial and three nuclear genes (about 2.8 kb) were sequenced to assess phylogenetic relationships. We utilized an unprecedented sampling of 200 microhylid taxa representing 91% of currently recognized subfamilies and 95% of New World genera. Our analyses do not fully resolve relationships among subfamilies supporting previous studies that have suggested a rapid early diversification of this clade. We observed a close relationship between Synapturanus and Otophryne of the subfamily Otophryninae. Within the subfamily Gastrophryninae relationships between genera were well resolved. Conclusion: Otophryninae is distantly related to all other New World microhylids that were recovered as a monophyletic group, Gastrophryninae. Within Gastrophryninae, five genera were recovered as non-monophyletic; we propose taxonomic re-arrangements to render all genera monophyletic.
