INTRODUCTION RECOVERING A REPRESSED PAS T On February 12, 2013, Ruth Calderon was invited to the dais of the Israeli Knesset to deliver her firs t speech as a newly-elected member of parliament.1 The speech was unlike any given in the his tory of deliberations in Israel’s legislature in that it consis ted primarily of her reading and interpreting a Talmudic s tory. The Talmudic s tory that Calderon read before the Knesset, firs t in the original Aramaic and then in Hebrew translation, was, as is typical of these s tories, very brief: Rabbi Rahumi s tudied under Rava in Mehoza. He would regularly come home to his wife on the eve of Yom Kippur. One day [on the eve of Yom Kippur] the topic [he was s tudying] drew him in. His wife anticipated him, “He is coming. He is coming.” He did not come. She began to grieve. She shed a tear from her eye. He was sitting on a roof. The roof collapsed under him, and he died. (B. Ketubot 62b)2 The s tory reflects what appears to have been a common practice among rabbinic scholars in Babylonia: to absent themselves from home for long periods of time to s tudy Torah. The author of the s tory expresses his disapproval of this cus tom by portraying empathically the emotional s tress experienced by Rabbi Rahumi’s wife when he was so engaged in Torah s tudy that he forgot to return home for the sacred holiday. The excitement captured in her cry of anticipation, “He is coming.

Abstract The following thesis looks at the subject of communist-oriented opposition in the GDR. More specifically, it considers how this phenomenon has been reconstructed in the state-mandated memory landscape of the Federal Republic of Germany since unification in 1990. It does so by presenting three case studies of particular representative value. The first looks at the former member of the Politbüro Paul Merker and how his entanglement in questions surrounding antifascism and antisemitism in the 1950s has become a significant trope in narratives of national (de-)legitimisation since 1990. The second delves into the phenomenon of the dissident through the aperture of prominent singer-songwriter, Wolf Biermann, who was famously exiled in 1976.

  • Israel and Overseas: Israeli Election Primer 2015 (As Of, January 27, 2015) Elections • in Israel, Elections for the Knesset A
Israel and Overseas: Israeli Election Primer 2015 (As of, January 27, 2015) Elections In Israel, elections for the Knesset are held at least every four years. As is frequently the case, the outgoing government coalition collapsed due to disagreements between the parties. As a result, the Knesset fell significantly short of seeing out its full four year term. Knesset elections in Israel will now be held on March 17, 2015, slightly over two years since the last time that this occurred. The Basics of the Israeli Electoral System All Israeli citizens above the age of 18 and currently in the country are eligible to vote. Voters simply select one political party. Votes are tallied and each party is then basically awarded the same percentage of Knesset seats as the percentage of votes that it received. So a party that wins 10% of total votes, receives 10% of the seats in the Knesset (In other words, they would win 12, out of a total of 120 seats). To discourage small parties, the law was recently amended and now the votes of any party that does not win at least 3.25% of the total (probably around 130,000 votes) are completely discarded and that party will not receive any seats. (Until recently, the “electoral threshold,” as it is known, was only 2%). For the upcoming elections, by January 29, each party must submit a numbered list of its candidates, which cannot later be altered. So a party that receives 10 seats will send to the Knesset the top 10 people listed on its pre-submitted list.

Acquiring basic skills - summer semester studies 447 participants attend the four Universities during the summer for summer courses on basic skills as well as for in-depth courses in fields studied in the program. The courses are conducted in small groups to enable effective learning. The summer courses have a number of aims: the universities - continued use of the empty university classrooms during the summer months for participants interested in expanding their knowledge; the participants - summer courses are optional: the participants come to these courses independently, and the aim is to develop commitment to independent learning; to expand the ripples of volunteering and social action - some of the summer courses were developed and are given by instructing-students who taught in the program in the past with the aim of expanding their social activity; the summer courses at Ben Gurion and Haifa Universities are given by adopting Kibbutzim - Kibbutz Beeri for Ben Gurion University, which has been accompanying the program for six years, joined by Kibbutz Ma’agan Michael, for whom this is the first year of accompanying the Haifa University. The summer courses are given by members of the Kibbutzim on a volunteer basis, which enables us to create an additional exciting meeting point between participants of the program and Israeli society, and to leverage social activity of the program to additional entities. Additional NGOs and corporations teach courses at a considerable discount and join in our social activity. Tel Aviv University - 113 participants participate in the summer courses at Tel Aviv University in a variety of fields of study: a course on basic mathematics, given by a former instructing-student of the program, Mrs.

  • This Thesis Examines the Rhetoric of East German Domestic and Foreign Politics and How the Issue of Race and Racism Was Handled
This thesis examines the rhetoric of East German domestic and foreign politics and how the issue of race and racism was handled. It covers the time period from the early 1950s through the 1960s, while contextualizing East German politics with German politics of the Weimar and Nazi eras. Accounts of racism towards Jews, Slavs and groups from Africa, Latin America and South East Asia are examined. The thesis attempts to show that in the self-proclaimed anti-racist state of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), racism marked both domestic and foreign politics and greatly influenced the Cold War politics of East Germany. The racism that was tolerated and promoted in the early period of the GDR still influences Germany today. 1 I give permission for public access to my thesis and for any copying to be done at the discretion of the archives librarian and/or the College librarian.
