Governance from Ancient Indian Scriptures 8. Closing Plenary The Convention will begin with the Opening Plenary at 2:00 PM on November 22, 2017 and conclude with Interactive Session for ICSI Members from 03:00 PM onwards on November 24, 2017. Eminent Persons and Experts in their respective ields from the Government, Regulators, Profession, Academia and Corporate Sector will address the participants. In such a gathering focusing on the exchange of professional knowhow, your participation will surely contribute. Along with this, the participants will get hold of opportune opening for the mutual sharing of professional views and experience with their peers participating from all around India. The value of such buildings and precincts are to be bought to the notice of the general public suitably. Lack of efforts in this regard is the major reason for the increasing trend in demolishing such buildings. Once a heritage monument is lost it will be an irreparable loss forever. Spoiling the heritage buildings will amount to a crime committed to the posterity. The Kerala State Town and Country Planning Department has made an attempt to identify the buildings and precincts having heritage value throughout the State as per the advice of the Art and Heritage Commission. The information gathered from the capital district as part of this is now being released as an initial step. It gives pleasure that the book reveals a number of heritage properties around us, which we are ignorant about. Let this book create awareness among the public regarding some of the existing remnants of the historic, cultural and architectural importance of the district.

Figure 1: Meditating Buddha Statue at Mavelikara Abstract : Mavelikara, a township situated in what is now Alappuzha district in Kerala, has been thriving since ancient times along the banks of the Achenkovil River. Between the 3rd century BC and 13th century AD it was part of Onnattukara or Odanadu - a thriving cultural principality of ancient Kerala which flourished as a Buddhist centre after the Mauryan Emperor Ashoka convened his proselytizing missions to spread Buddhism. It was a progressive faith promoting an egalitarian and inclusive way of living which did not seek exclusion of women from mainstream dialogues. Peace and prosperity was enjoyed, as the agrarian economy prospered as the byproduct of a community that was able to work harmoniously. However, after a few centuries, the presence of Buddhism was entirely obliterated from social consciousness through the hegemony of institutionalized faith systems. It was appropriated and assimilated, and tangible forms destroyed until its existence could hardly be traced. We have been able to successfully complete the two projects awarded to us by Department of Environment and Climate Change, Government of Kerala on ‘Preparing a Position Paper on Climate Change in Kerala’ and also ‘Landuse/ Landform alterations due to Laterite Quarrying in Kerala and its Environmental Impacts’. When the final report of the Laterite Quarrying project was submitted to Mr. Sanjayan Kumar, IFS, Director, DoECC, he was very impressed by the quantum of work which went into it and the exhaustive report with text, data and images. Considering the high relevance of the study, in the background of the changing landuse of the State, he has asked us to make a presentation of the work in a joint meeting of the State Environment Impact Assessment Agency (SEIAA) and State Expert Appraisal Committee (SEAC). Another most impactful work that we have been able to carry out was the project titled ‘Marine Turtle Conservation along Kerala Coast’ in which we have been able to work with the seven Local Marine Turtle Conservation Groups (LMTCGs), voluntarily and very sacrificially working along the coastline for the protection of the very few number of Olive Ridley Turtles coming to make its nest and lay eggs.
