It was early evening (about half past six) : Of alcohol, he’d no doubt had a sizeable fix. A battered blue bicycle, he wheeled by his side – That battered blue bicycle, I prayed he’d not ride. Upon a wooden bench, he sat himself down, Then, from out of his mouth, came a terrible sound. I guessed that the sound was supposed to be a song, But the words were all garbled and the tune all wrong. His musical accompaniment was his bicycle bell – What song he sang, I was quite unable to tell. I doubted he’d be on The X-Factor anytime soon, As he sat on his bench beneath a crescent-shaped moon. On the opposite side of the road, I very sensibly stayed, But a smile graced my lips as I went on my way.

World Services, Inc. Library of Congress Control Number: 2001094693 ISBN 1-893007-16-2 Printed in the United States of America Preface THIS IS the fourth edition of the book “Alcoholics Anonymous.” The first edition appeared in April 1939, and in the following sixteen years, more than 300,000 copies went into circulation. The second edition, published in 1955, reached a total of more than 1,150,500 copies. The third edition, which came off press in 1976, achieved a circulation of approximately 19,550,000 in all formats. Because this book has become the basic text for our Society and has helped such large numbers of alcoholic men and women to recovery, there exists strong sentiment against any radical changes being made in it. Therefore, the first portion of this volume, describing the A.A. recovery program, has been left largely untouched in the course of revisions made for the second, third, and fourth editions. The section called “The Doctor’s Opinion” has been kept intact, just as it was originally written in 1939 by the late Dr.

Big Book of Advent Devotionals – Year 2 Based on the Daily Lectionary of the Book of Common Worship Pittsburgh Theological Seminary’s “Big Book of Advent Devotionals – Year 2” gives you a valuable resource for personal and corporate Spiritual formation during the Advent season. Seminary alumnae/i, faculty, staff, Board members, and students since 2008 have contributed to this resource as a means of blessing you not only in this Advent season but also in those to come! Pittsburgh Theological Seminary www.pts.edu Page 1 Year 2, Day 1 A reading from page 141 of Reclaiming the Old Testament from the Christian Pulpit, by Don Gowan, faculty emeritus I’d like to tell you about the quietist Christmas I ever spent. Then I’ll explain why I’m telling you this. It was 1951, my first year out of college. I was working in Richland, WA, at one of the Atomic Energy Commission plants run by the General Electric Company. The plant and the town we lived in had been built by the army during the war and in 1951 the only housing available for single employees was in dormitories, so I lived in one room on the second floor in a dorm across the street from the plant where I worked. As Christmas approached some of my friends planned a trip into the mountains and asked if I would like to go along, but for some reason which I don’t remember I decided not to.

1 Ale, Glorious Ale (trad.) `Alf a Pint of Ale (Gus Elen) 1. For breakfast I likes a little bit of toast, Now when I were a young man my father did say And `alf a pint of ale. Summer`s a coming it’s time to make hay And for dinner I likes a little bit of meat, Now when hays been carted don’t you ever fail And `alf a pint of ale. To drink gaffer`s health in a pint of good ale. Now for tea I likes a little bit o` fish, And `alf a pint of ale. Ch. But for supper I likes a crust of bread and cheese, Ale, ale, glorious ale And a gallon and a half of ale. Served up in pewter it tells it’s own tale Some folks likes radishes some curly kale All Around My Hat (trad.) But give I boiled parsnips and a gurt dish of taters And a lump of fatty bacon and a pint of good ale. Chorus All around my hat, I will wear the green willow, And all around my hat, for a twelve-month and a day. 2. Now take those teetotallers they drinks water neat. And if anyone should ask me the reason why I'm wearin' it, It's all for my true love who's far, far, away It must rot their gutsies and give ‘em damp feet. Now I always say that a man can’t grow stale On boiled beef and bacon and a pint of good ale.
