Since her early days hosting parties at the storied Pyramid Club, alongside such icons as Lady Bunny and RuPaul, Simpson was rarely without her point-and-shoot camera as she shot her drag queen contemporaries and friends at nightclubs, Pride parades and intimate gatherings. Simpson’s photo collection spans 1987–1997 and is an informal queer archive that documents drag as it garnered mainstream success. Selected from Simpson’s archive of hundreds of photographs, the images that comprise Where Love Lives provide a glimpse into the drag subculture that dominated NYC nightlife during the 90s.The show is titled after Alison Limerick’s 90s dance hit of the same name. Set against the backdrop of the AIDS crisis, the '90s culture wars, and NYC mayor Giuliani’s crackdown on nightlife, Simp- son’s images depict queer joy as a radical act of defiance in the face of loss and oppression. Community and chosen family are re- curring themes throughout the work. Often dismissed as frivolous, nightlife offers the queer community a place of belonging and a place to escape bigotry. Simpson’s exhibition juxtaposes portraits of drag queens performing hyper femininity with images of go-go boys acting out mascu- line cliches. In these photographs, the trappings of gender are a construct meant to be subverted, poked fun at, and celebrated. Camp is deployed as a survival strategy. Since emerging from the East Village drag scene in the late 1980s, Linda Simpson has racked up a long list of creative endeavors, including nightlife work galore as a hostess and party promoter; publisher of the underground gay magazine My Comrade; writer and star of four different plays; and extensive work as a journalist. Her acclaimed narrated slideshow presentation “The Drag Explo- sion,” has been shown in theaters, art spaces and colleges in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Copenhagen. Extensive press coverage for her work includes The New York Times, New York Magazine and The Huffington Post. The first book to emerge from her proJect is PAGES (Peradam, 2013), which features photos of her captivating friend Page. Photos from the book were exhibited as a solo exhibit at NYC’s ClampArt Gallery in 2014. Her work has been included in various exhibitions including “Gay Gotham” at the Museum of the City of New York (2016), “Perpetual Revolution: Image and Social Change” at the International Center of Photography” (2017), and “Queer City,” a CNN sponsored event in honor of the 50th anniversary of Stone- wall (2019). Linda’s photos are featured extensively in the HBO documentary WIG, (2019) about NYC’s Long-running drag festival Wigstock. In 2021, a coffee-table book of Linda’s work is scheduled to be published by Domain publishing company. Tiger Strikes Asteroid's 2020 exhibition program is sponsored, in part, by the Greater New York Arts Development Fund of the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, administered by Brooklyn Arts Council (BAC). .

In a rather conventional sense, great performing is often associated with a sense of interiority, becoming your character, identifying with your role. In that sense, a great performer could become anyone else simply by looking deep within herself. Of course, there’s a long history of performance practices that reject this model. Yet whether it is a matter of embracing or rejecting what is, so to speak, on the inside, there is an overarching belief that great performers are uniquely adept at locating themselves and using that self to build a world around them. It is no surprise then that today we are all expected to be great performers. Our lives are filled the endless capacity to shed one skin for another, to produce multiple cyber-personalities on a whim. We are hyperaware that our outsides are malleable and performative—and that our insides might be an endless resource for reinventing and rethinking ourselves (not to mention the world around us). So perhaps it’s almost too obvious to say that Jibz When I was a youth, say, about 8, I played a game in the Cameron, the mastermind behind Dynasty Handbag, is an incredible woods with my friend Ocean where we pretended to be hookers.

Drag Shows: Drag Queens and Female Impersonators by Andres Mario Zervigon Encyclopedia Copyright © 2015, glbtq, Inc. Entry Copyright © 2002, glbtq, Inc. Reprinted from http://www.glbtq.com Drag performer Lady Bunny. Female impersonation appears to have existed through the length of human Portrait by Sasha civilization and the breadth of its cultures. Ancient Roman literature and history Vaughn, courtesy feature a multitude of male cross-dressers, while in numerous Native American ladybunny.net. cultures, cross-dressing berdaches were respected as prophets and seers who were able to glimpse the world through both masculine and feminine perspectives. In the late nineteenth century, Richard von Krafft-Ebing observed in his Psychopathia Sexualis (1887) that the smallest German hamlets often featured drag culture. In contemporary India men who choose to live and dance as women are regarded with particular religious reverence. Female Impersonation and Sexual Identity Female impersonation need say nothing about sexual identity. For example, many male actors in Elizabethan England and in the classical Chinese theater performed female roles because women were generally banned from the stage. Whether or not these performances blurred the sexual identification of the actors remains a point of debate in social and theater history and a focus of recent films such as Shakespeare in Love (1998) and Farewell My Concubine (1993). Although transvestism, a term coined by Magnus Hirschfeld in 1910 and derived from the Latin for "across" and "dress," is practiced mostly by heterosexual males, the performance of female impersonation has come to be associated particularly with glbtq culture. Why this should be so is not altogether clear, but it may be that gender transgression is a component of sexual transgression or at least evokes empathy among those crossing sexual boundaries, particularly when these boundaries seem difficult to define.

Hosted by veteran drag performer RuPaul, Drag Race features drag queen entertainers vying for the title of “America’s Next Drag Superstar.” Since premiering in 2009, the show has become a queer cultural phenomenon that successfully commodifies and markets Camp and drag performance to television audiences at heretofore unprecedented levels. Over its nine seasons, the show has provided more than 100 drag queen artists with a platform to showcase their talents, and the Drag Race franchise has expanded to include multiple television series and interactive live events. The RuPaul’s Drag Race phenomenon provides researchers with invaluable opportunities not only to consider the function of drag in the 21st Century, but also to explore the cultural and economic ramifications of this reality television franchise.

  • “Drag Queens Talk Like Women, You Know”
“Drag Queens Talk Like Women, You Know” - A study in the Use of the Hedge “You Know” in Feminine-Gendered Speech Danny Bennet t 2016 C-essay 15 hp Engelska 61-90 Handledare: Pia Visén Examinator: Marko Modiano Abstract The aim of this study was to analyze and compare the use of the verbal hedge “you know” in the spontaneous speech of women and drag queens to compare for instances of certainty and uncertainty as described by Holmes (1986). For the data, episodes of the reality shows RuPaul’s Drag Race Untucked which airs on Logo TV and The Real Housewives of Orange County which airs on Bravo TV were manually transcribed by the conventions of written speech. The use of “you know” was then analyzed by function and context. In the results of this study, the women used “you know” to express uncertainty more often than the drag queens, except not in the way Lakoff (2004) described as being an aspect of “women’s language.” The drag queens used “you know” more often to express certainty. However, when used to express uncertainty its use by the drag queens was more relevant to “women’s language” as described by Lakoff (2004) or an exaggerated performance of femininity.
