Brendan Perlini, Dylan Larkin, Josh Jacobs, Ryan Mantha, Chris Brown and Aaron Haydon from the BT ’96 team and Matheson Iacopelli from BT ’95, all had their names called at the Wells Fargo Center. “That’s pretty rewarding,” said Belle Tire hockey director John Kay. The Belle Tire ’96 team won four Michigan Amateur Hockey Association state championships, a national championship and was national runner-up another season. Today we feature John Kay, one of the movers and shakers of AAA hockey. By Paul Harris Hockey Weekly Editor As he was winding down his 20-plus season career in softball, John Kay was looking forward to just sitting in the stands watching his sons play hockey. That dream ended when the coach of Kay’s son’s team asked him to be the team manager. More than 20 years later Kay, 62, is one of AAA’s most influential people in Michigan and the Michigan Amateur Hockey Association. He is the Belle Tire Hockey Club’s hockey director, a board member of the Tier I Elite Hockey League and a for - mer president of the league and its forerunners the Michigan and the Midwest Elite Hockey League. Kay never intended to be involved with hockey. “I used to like watching it all the time,” he said of the ice game. “I used to go see the Philadelphia Flyers play (when Hockey Weekly photos by John Castine they came to Detroit). I was a Flyers’ fan.” If the Detroit Tigers are playing at home, you’ll most likely find John Kay and family watching them at Comerica Park.
