Should we hold the view that anyone who is willing to go through such a process will be able to discern the way that St. Ignatius describes in his Spiritual Exercises? And when we hear a question such as “Do you discern as an American or a Vietnamese?” should we look at the questioner as if he or she is out of his or her mind? In reality, we at times have a tendency to hold the view that Ignatian discernment may not be influenced by ethnic factors because its focal point is not our ethnicity or even decision-making. Rather, it is about deepening our relationship with God, appreciating the gifts that God has given us, and discovering how we may respond to that love in daily life. Perhaps, because of this mentality, we often think that, despite our cultural differences, we can discern according to the Ignatian method as long as we are willing. We even fall into the trap of seeing cultural variance as a minor factor rather than a potential impediment. We then fail to recognize that many people (especially those who live in Vietnam) struggle when they attempt to use the Ignatian method. Sometimes these people enter into the process just for the sake of formality, and they let their cultural values (e.g., collective tendency, obedience, filial piety, or high respect for authority) trump the whole process. Other times, they have to ii discern not as the true Vietnamese but as Westerners. It is legitimate for us to wonder whether they can have an authentic Ignatian discernment and whether they can be who they are when discerning. This thesis asserts that, on the one hand, people can still discern authentically the way that Ignatius describes in the Spiritual Exercises, and on the other hand, they can turn the potential impediments within their cultural values into an opportunity for enrichment. The thesis also suggests that instead of letting cultural values be stumbling blocks, people can transform them into beneficial additives to sweeten the fruit of their discernment. In order to achieve this goal, this dissertation points out that there is a need for a mutually enriched dialogue between Ignatian spirituality and Vietnamese culture on the question of discernment and obedience. There is also a need for Ignatian spirituality to be inculturated into the culture of Vietnam. Such an inculturation will help the Vietnamese to maintain the core values of their own culture, and at the same time not turn the Ignatian method of discernment into something that is totally different. iii ACKNOWLEDGMENTS I would like to express my deep gratitude to my director, Professor Gill Goulding, C.J., for her constant encouragement, her great patience, her wise insights, and her gentle guidance.     Transcendental Thomism: Realism Rejected Christopher M. Cullen, S.J. In his book The Peasant of the Garonne Maritain speaks of what has been one of the central tenets of the realist tradition from the beginning of philosophy­ that the mind attains reality: Greek reason was able to become aware of that glory of the mind which is knowing and of the authentic relation between the mind and the extra-mental being of things ... It was able to see that the human intellect, in identifying itself immaterially, intentionaliter, with the being of things, truly reaches that which exists outside our minds ... 1 Transcendental Thornism in some profoundly significant ways abandons this tenet. The adherents of this branch of the Neo-scholastic movement, begun by the Belgian Jesuit, Joseph Marechal (1878-1944), nobly attempt to beat Kant at his own game; for they seek to establish an apodictic metaphysics of being by using a subjective starting point. But they have, in fact, read Thomas with the eyes of German idealists, and in so doing they have introduced first principles within the Thomistic synthesis that fundamentally alter and transform it in idealist and subjectivist directions. Hence, it is the argument of this paper that a metaphysics of being cannot be based on a transcendental, subjective starting point.     IGNATIAN SPIRITUALITY AND THEOLOGY Bernard Sesboüé, SJ Professor emeritus Fundamental and dogmatic theology Centre Sèvres, Paris, France here certainly must be an “Ignatian” way of doing theology. Of course it would not be the only way and Tother spiritual families have been inspired by other “ways of proceeding.” In these pages I would like to allude to the method that seems to me to be based on the spirituality of St. Ignatius and are illustrated by several great Jesuit theologians of the 20th century. Ignatius of Loyola and theology St. Ignatius never was a theologian by trade. He only became a student himself late in life. But he took his theological formation in Paris very seriously, because he was convinced that he could not “help souls” without first doing the necessary studies. He studied during troubled times in the context of the early Reformation in Paris.1 Ignatius and his companions sided with moderates who sought to reconcile the desire for a faith that was more interior and personal with the doctrinal authority of the Church. They were open to the progress of the Renaissance; they favored the study of the “three languages,” Hebrew, Greek and Latin. But they wanted to preserve classical references to scholastic theology as found in its better representatives. The person grows in freedom to discern and choose actions or directions of greater value and potential for good. • Honor differences Ignatius valued differences in relation to times, culture and each individual. Thus, adaptation to widely varied situations is respected, indeed expected. Ignatian spirituality provides a foundation and framework that can support accommodation to varied settings. • Experiential Ignatius developed a method to experience Ignatian spirituality. He called this method the “Spiritual Exercises.” He and his early companions found that the Spiritual Exercises helped to re-order and re- direct their lives to praise and serve God. Today, people seek to “make the Spiritual Exercises” for variouis reasons: to form a closer relationship with God, to consider vocational or other life choices, to be a better person (e.g., parent, spouse, colleague, neighbor, global citizen) or to more fully understand Ignatian spirituality and Jesuit identity.

Efforts to inculturate the Christian faith into Vietnamese cultures have begun from early missionaries in Vietnam in the early seventeenth century to church leadership in Vietnam today. At the early twentieth century, the poetry of Hàn Mặc Tử (1912 – 1940) has demonstrated a new level of inculturation where the Christian faith no longer remains at the level of “superficial adaptation” but has become a principle that animates, directs, and unifies Vietnamese cultures, transforming and remaking it so as to bring about a new creation. Therefore, Hàn’s works can serve as source of inspiration and example for the New Evangelization in the Vietnamese Catholic Church today.     74 THE INFLUENCE OF THE IGNATIAN TRADITION By PHILIP SHELDRAKE HIS ARTICLE RECORDS some instances where the Ignatian spiritual tradition has had an influence in the past beyond the Roman Catholic Communion. In an age such as T ours, when the Spiritual Exercises increasingly enjoy an ecumenical influence, it is tempting to look for historical precedents. But the desire for precedents has its dangers. Firstly, we may be tempted to find examples of influence on rather flimsy evidence. I therefoi~e note where the question of Ignatian influence is conten- tious or inconclusive. Secondly, comparisons between different ages and cultures are notoriously difficult because underlying conditions and assumptions have changed considerably. This essay, therefore, does not attempt to draw any practical conclusions from the past for application in the present. However, the evidence does reveal that we need to revise the traditional emphasis on historical discontinuity and total divergence between Roman Catholic and other Christian traditions because there has always been some inter- confessional osmosis even during Centuries of public antagonism. The essay has three sections; Firstly , I shall consider the Anglican tradition where there appears to be the most substantial evidence of Ignatian connections at different points. The Anglican Com- munion, while a Church of the Reformation, has been particularly open to its own pre-Reformation roots and to movements and emphases beyond its boundaries, not least in the Roman Catholic Communion. Secondly, and more briefly, I shall look at a few examples in the Reformed traditions. Here I include John Wesley, one of the founders of Methodism , even though he was an Anglican priest who only reluctantly accepted the gradual separation of the Methodist movement from his parent Church.

IGNATIUS St. Ignatius was born in 1491 in Basque Country of northern Spain. His parents died before he was sixteen. His early years were given over to the vanities of the world including his appearance, gambling, dueling, and being a ladies’ man (Martin, 2006; Link, 1993). He later distinguished himself as a valiant soldier in the Spanish / French wars of the 16th century. During combat his hip, leg, and knee were shattered by a cannonball during battle in Pamplona in 1521.

The Bibliography was resumed in 2006 by Paul Begheyn SJ, who was its author until 2018.
