Changes in vegetation structure can alter the physical habitat structure, thermal environment, and food available to arthropods, which play an important role in the structure and functioning of Arctic ecosystems. Not only do they provide key ecosystem services such as pollination and nutrient cycling, they are an essential food source for migratory birds. In this study I examined the relationships between the abundance, diversity, and community composition of arthropods and the height and cover of several shrub species across a tundra-shrub gradient in northwestern Alaska. To characterize nestling diet of common passerines that occupy this gradient, I used next-generation sequencing of fecal matter. Willow cover was strongly and consistently associated with abundance and biomass of arthropods and significant shifts in arthropod community composition and diversity. -

(e-mail: john. brown @ars.usda.gov ) Abstract.—Clepsis anderslaneyii, new species is described and illustrated from the "sky islands" (i.e., Chiricahua, Huachuca, and Santa Rita mountains) of southeastern Arizona, U.S.A. Superficially, it is most similar to Argvrotac'nia dorsafana (Dyar 1903), but it is assigned unambiguously to Clepsis Guenée on the basis of the characteristically modified transtilla, which includes a narrow or obsolete mesal portion and a dentate subbasal swollen lobe. Among Nearctic congeners, the male genitalia of C. anderslanevii are most similar to those of C. fucana (Walsingham 1879), but those of C anderslanevii can be distinguished by the more broadly pointed valva, narrower transtilla, bulbous uncus, and broader tegumen. The extremely short ductus bursae of the female genitalia of C. andersianevu is unique among Clepsis. The total number of confirmed Irish species of Lepidoptera now stands at 1480. Key words: Lepidoptera, additions, deletions, corrections, Irish list, Elachista biatomella Introduction Bond, Nash and O’Connor (2006) provided a checklist of the Irish Lepidoptera. Since its publication, many new discoveries have been made and are reported here. In addition, several deletions have been made. A concise and updated checklist is provided. The following abbreviations are used in the text: BM(NH) – The Natural History Museum, London; NMINH – National Museum of Ireland, Natural History, Dublin. The total number of confirmed Irish species now stands at 1480, an addition of 68 since Bond et al. (2006). Taxonomic arrangement As a result of recent systematic research, it has been necessary to replace the arrangement familiar to British and Irish Lepidopterists by the Fauna Europaea [FE] system used by Karsholt 60 Bulletin of the Irish Biogeographical Society No. 36 (2012) and Razowski, which is widely used in continental Europe. -

Phylogeny, evolution and speciation of Choristoneura and Tortricidae (Lepidoptera) by Giovanny Fagua González A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Systematics and Evolution Department of Biological Sciences University of Alberta © Giovanny Fagua González, 2017 Abstract Leafrollers moths are one of the most ecologically and economically important groups of herbivorous insects. These Lepidoptera are an ideal model for exploring the drivers that modulate the processes of diversification over time. This thesis analyzes the evolution of Choristoneura Lederer, a well known genus because of its pest species, in the general context of the evolution of Tortricidae. It takes an inductive view, starting with analysis of phylogenetic, biogeographic and diversification processes in the family Tortricidae, which gives context for studying these processes in the genus Choristoneura. Tectonic dynamics and niche availability play intertwined roles in determining patterns of diversification; such drivers explain the current distribution of many clades, whereas events like the rise of angiosperms can have more specific impacts, such as on the diversification rates of herbivores. Tortricidae are a diverse group suited for testing the effects of these determinants on the diversification of herbivorous clades. To estimate ancestral areas and diversification patterns in Tortricidae, a complete tribal-level dated tree was inferred using molecular markers and calibrated using fossil constraints. The time-calibrated phylogeny estimated that Tortricidae diverged ca. 120 million years ago (Mya) and diversified ca. 97 Mya, a timeframe synchronous with the rise of angiosperms in the Early-Mid Cretaceous. Ancestral areas analysis supports a Gondwanan origin of Tortricidae in the South American plate. -

Tarset and Greystead Biological Records published by the Tarset Archive Group 2015 Foreword Tarset Archive Group is delighted to be able to present this consolidation of biological records held, for easy reference by anyone interested in our part of Northumberland. It is a parallel publication to the Archaeological and Historical Sites Atlas we first published in 2006, and the more recent Gazeteer which both augments the Atlas and catalogues each site in greater detail. Both sets of data are also being mapped onto GIS. We would like to thank everyone who has helped with and supported this project - in particular Neville Geddes, Planning and Environment manager, North England Forestry Commission, for his invaluable advice and generous guidance with the GIS mapping, as well as for giving us information about the archaeological sites in the forested areas for our Atlas revisions; Northumberland National Park and Tarset 2050 CIC for their all-important funding support, and of course Bill Burlton, who after years of sharing his expertise on our wildflower and tree projects and validating our work, agreed to take this commission and pull everything together, obtaining the use of ERIC’s data from which to select the records relevant to Tarset and Greystead. Even as we write we are aware that new records are being collected and sites confirmed, and that it is in the nature of these publications that they are out of date by the time you read them. But there is also value in taking snapshots of what is known at a particular point in time, without which we have no way of measuring change or recognising the hugely rich biodiversity of where we are fortunate enough to live. -

C. lidjiangense Petrak ex Hand.-Mazz. petiole. Leaf margins are dentate with C. argyrancanthum DC. C. lineare (Thunb.) Sch.-Bip. two to three spines bearing spinules 5 C. arvense (L.) Scop. C. maackii Maxim. mm long. The upper leaves are sessile, C. bracteiferum Shih C. monocephalum (Vant.) Lévl. similar in division to the lower stem C. chinense Gardn. et Champ. C. muliense Shih leaves, but turning slightly upwards C. chlorolepis Petrak C. pendulum Fisch. ex DC. on the stem. Most heads are arranged C. chrysolepis Shih C. periacanthaceum Shih terminally in an umbel. The involucre is C. eriophoroides (Hook. f.) Petrak C. racemiforme Ling et Shih ovate or ovate-oblong, sparsely arachnoid C. sairamense (C. Winkl.) O. et B. or glabrous, 1.5-2 cm in diameter. Five C. esculentum (Sievers) C. A. Mey. E-mail:[email protected] I.INTRODUCTION The number of genera of Tortricidae has increased dramatically over last 50 years; by 2007 there were over 1630 described genera, including synonyms. Many of the older de- scriptions are scattered throughout the literature, and because there are few larger synthetic treatments of the tortricids for most major biogeographic regions, this large number of taxa complicates considerably the work of taxonomists on the faunas of poorly known regions of the planet. In addition, characters that define many of the genera are not clearly articu- lated. The distribution of many genera is still insufficiently known, and this shortcoming frequently results in unexpected findings, e.g., the discovery of Afrotropical genera in the Neotropics. These types of discoveries may cause confusion for specialists that focus on thefaunaofasinglegeographicregion. The literature abounds with re-descriptions and diagnoses of tortricid genera, but many are rather short, frequently lacking comparisons with similar or related taxa.
