When it comes to playing the guitar, Derek Trucks was a child prodigy, playing his first paid gig at the age of 11. Throughout his career Derek has performed with some giants in music, including the Allman Brothers, Bob Dylan, Joe Walsh and Eric Clapton. In 2011 he and his wife Susan formed the Tedeschi Trucks Band, performing for sold-out audiences worldwide. To say Derek knows a thing or two about music is an understatement. So when it came time to outfit his studio listening room with speakers, he had only one speaker in mind: Bowers & Wilkins. M Magazine was fortunate enough to sit down with Derek in his studio and talk music, his band’s latest album, and his passion for Bowers & Wilkins speakers.

M: For those that don’t know about the Tedeschi Trucks Band, can you give them an idea of what you’re all about. Derek: It’s a bit of a traveling circus. It’s a 12-piece band that tries to do things the old way, in the sense that we play music because we love to play it, and everyone is really good at what they do. There’s no smoke and mirrors. Our sound is a collision of a lot of different sounds and influences. I grew up in Jacksonville, Florida and had a family connection to the Allman Brothers and that music is very prevalent. I played with that band for 15 years. There’s that blues-based improvisatory rock thing. There’s gospel, jazz, there’s world music, all of these different musical influences sneak into what we do.

A strong foundation: it’s essential in nearly every aspect of life. Barrier One knows this all too well when it comes to the construction industry, creating an admixture for concrete that produces impermeable, strengthened, shrink-reducing and corrosion-inhibiting results. With a new headquarters in the works, Barrier One also wanted a strong technology foundation, so they reached out to Magnolia to help provide audio, video and automation solutions that were rock solid.

These surveillance steps were necessary because the building’s architecture made it difficult to know when deliveries or guests arrived. And, more importantly, they wanted to make sure their secret formula remained, well, a secret. So beyond the surveillance cameras that surround the building, Magnolia also installed Holovision entry stations at every entrance. These stations have audio and video communication, as well as biometric readers with thumbprint access, key fobs and keypad control. Magnolia Project Manager Derek Edgecomb told us, “The access control was very impressive. The Holovision entry stations are integrated into the intercom portion of the Savant automation system, so if someone is at any of the gates or entrances, a visual comes up on the iPads that are on each employee’s desk. From there they can see and communicate with the visitor and open the gate or unlock the door.” It’s the high-level communication and protection the company was looking for.

From a TV to an entire system When Chris Carlile first started this project, he walked into Best Buy looking for a TV for the main conference room. Because what I’m really doing is trying to build a relationship. It isn’t about one sale: I want their business for life.”

A daily passion “About 6 years ago, I went through cancer and I continued to work. It was very hard, but as bad as I felt, something inside me would change when it was time to help a customer. I still had that urge, that desire and that excitement. I’ve always had this passion, because this is my gift. I enjoy people and I like products. I really enjoy new products, new technology. When I sell a nice system to a customer, I’m as excited for them as if I’m buying it for myself. The ultimate joy for me is when I close the sale and Dwaine Randall get them exactly what they want, that they’re happy.
