TOWNFIELD LANE PLAY AREA IMPROVEMENT PLANS Following initial face to face consultations with residents, and ideas expressed to us, Frodsham Town Council now wants to proceed with the much needed and overdue facelift for Townfield Lane Play Area.

We have come up with this first draft sketch plan of the improvements. The scheme includes a timber climbing frame, hexagonal frame swings, zip wire and a fenced off toddler area with trampoline, spinning bowl and climbing frame & slide. Also included are improvements to the pathways, a football pitch and picnic benches.

Pupils clock up 5,000 miles PUPILS at Hillside Primary School, Helsby, clocked up more than 5,000 miles within a few weeks of entering a programme to encourage children to get more active. As a result, the school has received a bursary of £500 – and pupils Mollie Kerr and Jess O’Neill, both aged five, won prizes of new trainers. The “SparkStart” programme has been introduced by Active Cheshire and New Balance and Hillside Primary were the first school in Cheshire to take part in New Balance’s 100-mile challenge. Each pupil received a pedometer to record their activity at school and at home – running, walking, jogging, swimming or cycling. The school recorded the miles completed. Hillside made a huge effort – and clocked up more than 5,000 in no time. Head teacher Craig Richardson said: “As a school, we are committed to get our children active. This was a great initiative provided by New Balance and Active Cheshire. “This formed part of our efforts to encourage all pupils to be physically active and lead a healthy lifestyle. This was a challenge I felt we could achieve.” To keep things moving during the award, Active Archie from Active Cheshire led a dance off at the school and got everyone to join in. Anne Boyd, chief executive officer of Active Cheshire, said: “We are delighted that the staff and children at Hillside have embraced this programme. The challenge embeds ‘active habits’ with children and working with New Balance has meant we could get local children doing this in an accessible and engaging way. The success of the challenge can be seen by the distance the school have covered. Well done to Mollie and Jess for their hard work!”

Town Council moves into new offices FRODSHAM Town Council has moved into new, more spacious offices. They have taken over the ground floor of Castle Park House, enabling all council activities to be together under one roof. Meetings of the full council and all its committees will, in future, be held in the house. Previously council staff had to struggle in cramped accommodation at the Footman’s Cottage in Castle Park and meetings were held either at Frodsham Community Centre or Castle Park Arts Centre. The council has also taken over responsibility for letting accommodation on the ground floor of Castle Park House, including for weddings. They have a number of desk spaces available for small businesses or individuals. The move has involved an increase in staff which means a reception desk will be open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday, although office hours will remain 9am to 1pm as previously. Leading a full life with dementia Artist’s impression of the Goods Shed project IT is quite possible to have a good and full life while suffering from dementia – that was the essential message from a well-attended dementia workshop held at the Princeway Medical Centre, Frodsham. Hosted by the Patient Participation Group (PPG) of the Frodsham Medical Practice, the workshop was led by Jane Stubbs, from the Alzheimer’s Society. A “dementia champion”, her role in the Society is to offer information, guidance and support to carers, people with dementia and their families. PPG chairman Marie Birkenhead said: “Jane started by explaining the different types of dementia and how it can affect people of all ages. “She immediately engaged with the audience with a lively question and answer session and followed this with two thought provoking activities, which challenged us all, and revealed how much we still have to learn about the disease. “All of this helped to enforce and re-enforce her essential message - that it is quite possible to a have good and full life with dementia.” At the end of the workshop, all those present agreed to become “Dementia Friends” and to take action to help to make the local community into a more caring community where those with dementia no longer have to feel isolated and lonely. Jane Stubbs is willing to speak to other groups, however large or small, and can be contacted by phone 01606 781110 or e-mail jane.stubbs@ alzeimers.org.uk
