    e Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy Bad Girls: Agency, Revenge, and Redemption in Contemporary Drama Courtney Watson, Ph.D. Radford University Roanoke, Virginia, United States [email protected] ABSTRACT Cultural movements including #TimesUp and #MeToo have contributed momentum to the demand for and development of smart, justified female criminal characters in contemporary television drama. These women are representations of shifting power dynamics, and they possess agency as they channel their desires and fury into success, redemption, and revenge. Building on works including Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl and Netflix’s Orange is the New Black, dramas produced since 2016—including The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, and Killing Eve—have featured the rise of women who use rule-breaking, rebellion, and crime to enact positive change. Keywords: #TimesUp, #MeToo, crime, television, drama, power, Margaret Atwood, revenge, Gone Girl, Orange is the New Black, The Handmaid’s Tale, Ozark, Killing Eve Dialogue: The Interdisciplinary Journal of Popular Culture and Pedagogy 37 Watson From the recent popularity of the anti-heroine in novels and films like Gone Girl to the treatment of complicit women and crime-as-rebellion in Hulu’s adaptation of The Handmaid’s Tale to the cultural watershed moments of the #TimesUp and #MeToo movements, there has been a groundswell of support for women seeking justice both within and outside the law. Behavior that once may have been dismissed as madness or instability—Beyoncé laughing wildly while swinging a baseball bat in her revenge-fantasy music video “Hold Up” in the wake of Jay-Z’s indiscretions comes to mind—can be examined with new understanding.

    Taking Intellectual Property into Their Own Hands Amy Adler* & Jeanne C. Fromer** When we think about people seeking relief for infringement of their intellectual property rights under copyright and trademark laws, we typically assume they will operate within an overtly legal scheme. By contrast, creators of works that lie outside the subject matter, or at least outside the heartland, of intellectual property law often remedy copying of their works by asserting extralegal norms within their own tight-knit communities. In recent years, however, there has been a growing third category of relief-seekers: those taking intellectual property into their own hands, seeking relief outside the legal system for copying of works that fall well within the heartland of copyright or trademark laws, such as visual art, music, and fashion. They exercise intellectual property self-help in a constellation of ways. Most frequently, they use shaming, principally through social media or a similar platform, to call out perceived misappropriations. Other times, they reappropriate perceived misappropriations, therein generating new creative works. This Article identifies, illustrates, and analyzes this phenomenon using a diverse array of recent examples. Aggrieved creators can use self-help of the sorts we describe to accomplish much of what they hope to derive from successful infringement litigation: collect monetary damages, stop the appropriation, insist on attribution of their work, and correct potential misattributions of a misappropriation. We evaluate the benefits and demerits of intellectual property self-help as compared with more traditional intellectual property enforcement.     Artist-Author Mary Hallock Foote and her Angle of Repose Casey Bush © 2003 ary Hallock Foote, the noted but neglected Western writer and illustrator, once admitted the limits of her realism as she confessed to the editor of Century Magazine when asked to draw a M full-page picture of a sheriff’s posse: “The picture is not so sincere as it might be. The artist, in the course of many rides over these mountain pastures, by daylight or twilight or moonrise, has never yet encountered anything so sensational as a troop of armed men on the track of a criminal.” Likewise, few posses ran across women like Mary Hallock Foote (1847-1938). The Victorian gentlewoman traveled the American West dressed in hoop skirt and petticoats, insisting that her children be educated by an English nanny and fed by a Chinese cook, so that she could work on her illustrations and stories, without interruption. Due to the physical isolation of Mary Hallock, circa 1874 Foote’s various homes, she thirsted for cultured visitors, as noted by a member of Clarence King’s Fortieth Parallel Survey who wrote about a visit: “King and I forged through the forest, crossing a mine ditch and in a little clearing espied a cozy log cabin. As we approached, we discerned a rustic porch made comfortable...suggesting that an Eastern woman, and a cultivated one, lived at the house...King had known her but this was the first time I had met Mary Hallock Foote...She was well read on everything and ripped out an intellectual go-as-you-please backed up by good looks and brightness.

    ''Sexuality is fluid''[1] a close reading of the first two seasons of the series, analysing them from the perspectives of both feminist theory and queer theory. It or is it? An analysis of television's The L Word from the demonstrates that even though the series deconstructs the perspectives of gender and sexuality normative boundaries of both gender and sexuality, it can also be said to maintain the ideals of a heteronormative society. Magdalen asylums in Australia James Franklin* A staple of extreme Protestant propaganda in the first half of the twentieth century was the accusation of ‘convent slave laundries’. Taylor From the Director: The Alexander City Chamber of Commerce presented the annual State of the City event at Central Alabama Com- munity College’s Betty Carol Graham Technology Center on February 26, 2020. John Taylor, Assistant Library Director, and Robert Bradford, Library Assistant, represented both Adelia Russell and Mamie’s Place at the event along with library board member Sheralyn Belyeu. Mayor Tommy Spraggins and other city officials enlightened the audience on the positive aspects of the city. The renovation of the old Russell Main Office building and the progress of the new City Complex was one of the popu- lar topics shared. It is great to see historical places restored and progress being made for our City so that our City Government can run smoother and more effectively. Alexander City is a wonderful community with aspirations of progress. Its small town demeanor and welcoming charm make it a great place to live and work. We appreciate all the effort, research and elbow grease that helps produce good outcomes for this community.
